Book excerpt: In award-winning author Brendan DuBois’ new mystery novel, defense analyst Lewis Cole must try to save a close friend from a death row murder conviction. In his tenth outing, retired intelligence analyst Lewis Cole faces his most daunting challenge yet: Trying to save his friend Felix Tinios from being sent to death row after a conviction on first degree murder—but Felix refuses to accept Lewis’ assistance. Felix is being charged for the brutal murder of a local businessman—witnesses place him at the location; the recovered murder weapon belonged to Felix; and his fingerprints are all over the crime scene. It seems to be the proverbial open-and-shut case, but Lewis refuses to believe his friend—even though Felix is a former enforcer for the Boston mob—was responsible. As he engages in his one-man attempt to free his friend, two FBI agents come to him with disturbing news: they have word that unless Felix is freed from prison in just three days, he will be murdered while in custody. With time running out, the FBI nipping at his heels, and with Felix’s own lawyer refusing to help, Lewis is on his own as he desperately tries to clear his friend’s name before Felix departs prison . . . as a dead man.

Book Detection of Severe Local Storm Phenomena by Automated Interpretation of Radar and Storm Environment

Download or read book Detection of Severe Local Storm Phenomena by Automated Interpretation of Radar and Storm Environment written by David Harvey Kitzmiller and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many operational features of the WSR-88D were incorporated specifically to aid forecasters in the detection of severe local storms (damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes). One interpretive product, the Severe Weather Potential (SWP) algorithm, yields an index proportional to the probability that an individual thunderstorm cell will soon produce any severe weather phenomena. The SWP is based solely on radar information, namely vertically-integrated liquid VIL and storm horizontal extent.

Book A Family Outbreak of Severe Local Storms

Download or read book A Family Outbreak of Severe Local Storms written by K. A. Browning and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is a case study of an outbreak of severe local storms that produced several tornadoes and extensive large hail in Oklahoma on 26 May 1963. Several authors have combined to describe the organization, structure, and evolution of these storms from a number of points of view. The storms are analyzed on four different size scales: (1) as products of their large-scale environment, (2) as members of a mesoscale system or family unit, (3) as individual evolving cells, and (4) as tornado and hail factories, with the emphasis on the tornadoes and the hailstones themselves. Data are obtained from conventional synoptic and mesosynoptic networks, visual and photographic observations, surface weather surveys, weather radars, sferics detectors, balloon tracks, radioactivity measurements in precipitation, and hailstone thin sections. Simple models are presented describing the airflow, structure and life cycle of individual severe local storms. (Author)

Book An Introduction to Severe Storms and Hazardous Weather

Download or read book An Introduction to Severe Storms and Hazardous Weather written by Jeffrey B. Halverson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 805 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a deep and encompassing survey of severe weather in all its forms. An Introduction to Severe Storms and Hazardous Weather is an exciting new textbook that allows students to learn the principles of atmospheric science through the drama, exhilaration, and even tragedy of severe weather. Balancing breadth and depth, Jeffrey B. Halverson adeptly combines a short, accessible introduction to the basic principles of meteorology with detailed coverage on large- and small-scale weather hazards. He draws on specific up-to-date case studies from North America to illustrate the cause of meteorological events including hurricanes, heavy snow and ice, floods, and tornadoes. Unlike existing books on the market, Halverson delves deep into the societal impacts of these events, drawing on examples from agriculture, utility infrastructure, and commercial aviation. Each chapter also features high-quality, customized color artwork by Thomas D. Rabenhorst that helps to enhance and embed learning. Thorough in its scope, and written with an impeccable focus on the science, this book will be an essential resource for introductory undergraduate courses in severe weather, natural hazards, and extreme meteorology. It is also an excellent supplemental textbook for courses on meteorology and atmospheric science.
