Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unfinished Portraits: Stories of Musicians and Artists The soft wind of an Italian spring stirred among the leaves outside. The windows of the studio, left open to the morning air, were carefully shaded. The scent of mulberry blossoms drifted in. The chair on the model-stand, adjusted to catch the light, was screened from the glare; and the light falling on the rich drapery flung across its back brought out a dull carmine in the slender, bell-shaped flowers near by, and dark gleams of old oak in the carved chair. The chair was empty; but the two men in the studio were facing it, as if a presence were still there. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixty Years Memories of Art and Artists I have to apologize to the readers of this little book of memories for appearing before the public as a writer, for I have no claims to literary merit. My friends have urged me to this because they say I am one of the very few links remaining to connect the older generation of artists with the present schools, and they have thought what I might say of the long past and succeeding years might be of interest at the present time to students in art. Much of this story was written some six or seven years ago and put aside as of no value, but again I was urged to go on, and now have recorded my im pressions and clear recollections of times past. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Graphic Forms: The Arts as Related to the Book To these speakers who served their arts without monetary reward and then, at great additional expense in time and effort, revised their talks to fit the requirements of book form sincere thanks must be given. A special word of appreciation is due Philip Hofer, whose admirable summation of the four meetings was one of their out standing features and whose words, as they appear here, have suffered severely in color and content because of limitations of space; Mr. Hofer's generous acceptance of drastic editorial abridg ment matched in quality the excellence of the commentary with which he brought our meetings to a close. It is a pleasure also to acknowledge the cordial hospitality of John P. Coolidge, Director of the F ogg Museum, and his entire staff. I am sure that The Book builders of Boston, the Press's partner in the symposium and in the publication of this book, will allow me to express our joint gratitude to all. Book Little Journeys to the Homes of Eminent Artists Classic Reprint

Download or read book Little Journeys to the Homes of Eminent Artists Classic Reprint written by Elbert Hubbard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Journeys to the Homes of Eminent Artists If he sketched a house he showed whether the roof was shingled or made of straw or tile; his trees te vealed the texture of the bark and showed the shape of the leaf, and every flower contained its pistil and stamens, and told the man knew his botany. Two of his pictures done in Rome in his twenty-ninth year, The Coliseum and The Forum, now in the Louvre, are good pictures - complete in detail, pains taking, accurate, hard and tight in technique. They are bomb-proof - beyond criticism-absolutely safe. (have a care, Corot. Keep where you are and you will become an irreproachable painter. That is to say, you will paint just like a hundred other French painters. There will be a market for your wares, the critics will approve, and at the Salon your work will never be either enskyed nor consigned to the catacombs. Society will court you, fair ladies will smile and encourage. You will be a success; your name will be safely pigeon holed among the unobjectionable ones and before your wind-combed shock of hair has turned to silver, you will be supplanted by a new crop of fashion's favorites. T is a fact worth noting that the two greatest landscape painters of all time were city-born and city-bred. Turner was born in London, the son of a barber, and Fate held him so in leash that he never got beyond the sound of Bow Bells until he was a man grown. Corot was born in Paris. Book Pen Pencil and Poison

Download or read book Pen Pencil and Poison written by Oscar Wilde and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2022-04-06 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is one of Wilde’s most intriguing essays. Part biography, part social commentary, and part philosophical debate, he writes the biography of an art critic, who was also convicted of murder. However, in true Wildean style, there’s more to the essay than meets the eye. While documenting the life and crimes of Thomas Griffiths Wainwright, Wilde explores the ideas of dual identity, sin in the formation of the personality, and the relationship between crime and culture. ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is a fascinating insight into some of the conventions of the time. Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900) was an Irish novelist, poet, playwright, and wit. He was an advocate of the Aesthetic movement, which extolled the virtues of art for the sake of art. During his career, Wilde wrote nine plays, including ‘The Importance of Being Earnest,’ ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan,’ and ‘A Woman of No Importance,’ many of which are still performed today. His only novel, ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ was adapted for the silver screen, in the film, ‘Dorian Gray,’ starring Ben Barnes and Colin Firth. In addition, Wilde wrote 43 poems, and seven essays. His life was the subject of a film, starring Stephen Fry.

Download or read book Stories of the German Artists Classic Reprint written by Hans Wolfgang Singer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of the German Artists There are many circumstances which apprise us of the low estimation in which art was held during the evanescence of the Middle Ages, but none enforces the point upon us with greater effectiveness than this. Truly, indeed, the man whom later ages have looked up to almost as to a special kind Of being, and about whose work more hubbub has been raised than about any other profession almost, was then held for a mere craftsman, an artisan like every one else. And though he may have done as charming work as he whom we now style Master Wilhelm, or as beautiful and important work as he whom we now style the Master of the Life of the Virgin, or as strangely uncommon and startling produc tions as the Master of the St. Thomas Altar piece, yet he was no more deemed worthy of being cherished in the memory of ages to come as an individual than the good fellow who tailored well-fitting clothes, or he who joined tables and chairs well, or he who perhaps excelled as a pastry-cook. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Journeys: To the Homes of Eminent Painters Michael Angelo was born in a shabby little village but a few miles from Flor ence. In another village near by was born Leonardo. Great men never come singly, says Emerson. And yet Angelo and Leonardo exercised no in uence upon each other that we can trace. The younger man never came under the spell of the older one, but moved straight on to his destiny, showing not the slightest arc in his orbit in deference to the great luminary of his time. Book Great Masters Classic Reprint

Download or read book Great Masters Classic Reprint written by John Lafarge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-05 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Masters Great artist of the past as a free agent, early possessed of all the power and development acquired by long work against outside pressure, and to think of him as imposing the form of his ideas upon an easy world. Hence, sometimes we think of Albrecht D'urer as bringing Teutonic art into Italy, while, of course, he is nothing more than a German student going to the land of greater art. We throw back into the early position of the great man the image of his full development; we make him out as conscious from the beginning of all his capacities. Instead of recognising in him the same laws that belong to other developments, we insist on his being all of one piece - as if, like Minerva, he had sprung all armed from the brain of Jupiter. In short, we forget that these men had to die long ago to obtain the authority which they hold to - day. It is possible that none of them achieved their best work, or carried out their intentions in full. Rubens and Raphael may have had some such chance, but we know that we see in Michelangelo and Rembrandt the expression of a struggle against outside necessities. To give a full account of the life of any great artist the history of each piece of work should be taken up as we take up the story of a general's campaign. I have not expressly stated these points in the brief essays. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is well known, that Hubert and John Van-eyck in a manner discovered this admirable secret, the finding of which occasioned almost as much trouble as the researches after the philosophers stone; but though the Van-eycks succeeded to the admiration of all Europe, still the most experienced colourists unanimously allow Aldrovandus to have exceeded them in every respect. Book Great Portraits Children Classic Reprint

Download or read book Great Portraits Children Classic Reprint written by Philip Leslie Hale and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Portraits: Children Still, practically every great painter has tried his hand at painting children at least once or twice, and most of them have produced excellent work; only a man may turn out a very respectable portrait of a child and yet not be a true painter of children. To do that well there is needed a certain insight into child charac ter. Not that a child has a very subtle or complicated character, but it is a character all the same and one that can be divined only by sympathy. Constable once said that to a man who approached Nature in an arrogant spirit her choicest beauties re mained forever veiled. One might 'say this particularly about children. We feel instinctively that only those who love children can paint them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. AS personalities these men were eight in number, but as artists they were virtually one; they were phases of the one human endeavour distributed over various countries and under varied conditions, to seize the physical beauty of nature, and to unite it with the moral beauty of mankind. Book Stories From Virgil Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories From Virgil Classic Reprint written by Alfred John Church and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From Virgil The favor with which the public received "Stories from Homer" has encouraged me to deal in the same way with the AEneid. I have found it a difficult task, and I must ask the indulgence of my readers, who will certainly miss, not only the freshness and simplicity of the great Greek epic, but those chief characteristics of Virgil, his supreme mastery of expression and the splendor of his style. I beg them to remember that I do not attempt to translate my original, that while I add nothing (except, in a very few instances, an explanatory phrase), I am constrained to leave out much; and that what I leave out, or at the most, very inadequately render, will often be found to be that which they have been accustomed most to admire in the poet, - his brilliant rhetoric, his philosophy, his imagination, and his pathos. My chief aim has been to represent to English readers the narrative, the interest of which is, perhaps, scarcely appreciated. You cannot fail Of finding him at home, when the sun gets above yonder loop-hole, and that is about the tenth hour in the morning. The stranger drew a small tablet from under his robe, and seemed to be about inscribing his name. Suddenly he approached the panel, and, taking a pencil, which lay near, drew simply a line. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Journeys to the Homes of Eminent Artists: Corot Ost young artists begin by working for microscopic effects, trying to portray every detail, to see every leaf, stem and branch and reveal them in the picture. {the ability to draw carefully and fin ish painstakingly is very necessary, but the great artist must forget how to draw before he paints a great picture; just as every strong writer must put the gram mar upon the shelf before he writes well. I once heard Mr. William Dean Howells say that any good, bright High School girl of sixteen could pass a far better examination in rhetoric than he could - and the admission did Mr. How ells no discredit. Would you advise me to take a course in elocution? Once asked a young man with oratorical ambitions of Henry Ward Beecher. Yes, by all means. Study elocution very carefully, but you will have to forget it all before you ever become an orator, was the answer.
