Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From the Earthly Paradise After the publication of this volume, Morris abandoned literature for a time, and became occupied in a project which had for its aim the establishment of the house beautiful by carrying the principles of pre-raphaelite art into the domain of house decoration. A factory was started for the production of artistic wall-papers, tiles, and tapestries, and for the design and manufacture of domestic utensils of beautiful and harmonious shape. Himself no mean painter and craftsman, Morris was for long the guiding spirit of the concern, and the value of the work he did, both directly by the production of beautiful objects, and indirectly by raising the standard of popular taste, cannot be ignored. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales From the Earthly Paradise The Earthly Paradise was written by William Morris in 1868-1870. It is a treasure-house of lovely old-world tales, mainly Greek and Northern, told in a series of narrative poems arranged not unlike Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. A company of seafarers who had failed to find the Earthly Paradise, their heart's desire, are thrown on an island in the West inhabited by a colony of Greeks, as told in the Prologue. Here they are kindly received by the islanders, and for a year twice a month at feast time a tale of old is told in turn by the Greeks and the Norwegians. From these twenty-four stories twelve have been selected and here rendered for children, largely in Morris own words, and, it is hoped, in such a way that later they will turn with interest to The Earthly Paradise, the work of a distinguished poet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Earthly Paradise, Vol. 2 of 4: A Poem The Earthly Paradise May O Love, this morn when the sweet nightingale Had so long finished all he had to say, That thou hadst slept, and sleep had told his tale; And midst a peaceful dream had stolen away In fragrant dawning of the first of May, Didst thou see aught? didst thou hear voices sing Ere to the risen sun the bells 'gan ring? For then methought the Lord of Love went by To take possession of his flowery throne, Ringed round with maids, and youths, and minstrelsy; A little while I sighed to find him gone, A little while the dawning was alone, And the light gathered; then I held my breath, And shuddered at the sight of Eld and Death. Alas! Love passed me in the twilight dun, His music hushed the Wakening ousel's song; But on these twain shone out the golden sun, And o'er their heads the brown bird's tune was strong, As shivering, twixt the trees they stole along; None noted aught their noiseless passing by, The world had quite forgotten it must die. For instance, the American edition of T ae bart/ely Paradise of 1884 on page 213 misprints aaz'lc'a' for Med; and all the editions, so far as I know, agree in misprinting folks for folk in line 116 of the Prologue. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Earthly Paradise, Vol. 4: A Poem December. Dead lonely night and all streets quiet now, Thin o'er the moon the hindmost cloud swims past Of that great rack that brought us up the snow; On earth strange shadows o'er the snow are cast; Pale stars, bright moon, swift cloud make heaven so vast That earth left silent by the wind of night Seems shrunken 'neath the grey unmeasured height. Ah! through the hush the looked-for midnight clangs! And then e'en while its last stroke's solemn drone In the cold air by unlit windows hangs, Out break the bells above the year foredone, Change, kindness lost, love left unloved alone; Till their despairing sweetness makes thee deem Thou once wert loved, if but amidst a dream. O thou who clingest still to life and love, Though nought of good, no God thou mayst discern, Though nought that is, thine utmost woe can move, Though no soul knows wherewith thine heart doth yearn Yet, since thy weary lips no curse can learn, Cast no least thing thou lovedst once away, Since yet perchance thine eyes shall see the day. What vision wilt thou give me, autumn morn, To make thy pensive sweetness more complete? What tale, ne'er to be told, of folk unborn? What images of grey-clad damsels sweet Shall cross thy sward with dainty noiseless feet? What nameless shamefast longings made alive, Soft-eyed September, will thy sad heart give? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Earthly Paradise, Vol. 1: A Poem The Earthly Paradise. Of Heaven or Hell I have no power to sing, I cannot ease the burden of your fears, Or make quick-coming death a little thing, Or bring again the pleasure of past years, Nor for my words shall ye forget your tears, Or hope again for aught that I can say, The idle singer of an empty day. But rather, when aweary of your mirth, From full hearts still unsatisfied ye sigh, And, feeling kindly unto all the earth, Grudge every minute as it passes by, Made the more mindful that the sweet days die - - Remember me a little then I pray, The idle signer of an empty day. The heavy trouble, the bewildering care That weighs us down who live and earn our bread, These idle verses have no power to bear; About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Purgatory of Dante Alighieri Vol 2 written by Charles Lancelot Shadwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Purgatory of Dante Alighieri, Vol. 2: The Earthly Paradise But even such a statement as this must not be pressed too far. Dante's conception of represent ing in a figure the scheme of man's redemption is, in his own phrase, polysensuous. On one side, it classifies and exemplifies all human passions, all human aspirations and desires, all the hind rances and all the helps which delay or assist man in fulfilling the law of his being. The Inferno shows how each evil passion indulged in brings its own appropriate punishment: the Purgaforz'o shows by what painful discipline it may be sub dued and eradicated. These lessons are not wholly new: they are a part of pagan morality: and they are illustrated from the teaching of pagan philo sophers, and from the examples of pagan lives. Here it is appropriate that Virgil, the typical re presentative of unassisted human wisdom, should be the pilgrim's guide and teacher, the exponent of pagan morality.
