Book Stories From the Arabian Nights

Download or read book Stories From the Arabian Nights written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From the Arabian Nights: With an Introductory Note When we sit down at the breakfast-table we do not often stop to ask ourselves whence such common things as coffee and sugar, pepper and salt, have come to us, or how many and what various persons have been engaged in bringing them out of the ground and across the seas, in buying and selling them, and making a livelihood, that we ourselves may live more comfortably. It is one thing to enjoy the taste of our viands, and it is another pleasure to know something of their origin. In the same way we read such tales as The Arabian Nights, a common property of man kind, and rejoice in them; and there is a separate satisfaction in finding where they have come from, and what and whom we have to thank for the enjoy ment they afford. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From the Arabian Nights In many of the stories mention is made of Haroun Alraschid. He was a great king who lived more than a thousand years ago in Bagdad, a city situated on the banks of the river Tigris, in the country now known as Turkey in Asia. The kings of Bagdad had the title of Caliph, a word which means "successor." They were so called because they were the successors of Mohammed, a celebrated teacher who founded the religion which since his time has prevailed in many parts of Asia, and Africa. His followers are called Mohammedans, and are also known as Mussulmans, or Moslems. They believe that Mohammed was a great prophet, and the chosen apostle of God. This belief they express in their prayers, which usually begin with these words: "There is no deity but God, and Mohammed is God's Apostle." The sacred book, or bible, of the Moslems is called the Koran, and they believe that what it contains was told to Mohammed by an angel sent down from heaven. The Caliph of Bagdad was head of the Mohammedan religion as well as king and ruler of the country. He was therefore addressed as "Commander of the Faithful," or "Prince of the Faithful," that is of those who believed in the prophet Mohammed. The chief minister of the Caliph was called the Vizier. Besides the Caliph there were other kings in Mohammedan countries. They were called Sultans, and were usually subject to the authority of the Caliph. The "Thousand and One Nights" has always been highly esteemed and admired in Europe and America as well as amongst the Arabs, who are great lovers of tales and romances. There is, perhaps, no other book of stories in existence which has afforded so much entertainment and delight to so many readers, old and young. Of course these stories are not true, but they give us a good deal of information as to the manners and customs of Eastern nations. Verily the works and words of those gone before us have become instances and examples to men of our modern day, that folk may view what admonishing chances befell other folk and may therefrom take warning; and that they may peruse the annals of antique peoples and all that hath betided them, and be thereby ruled and restrained. Praise, therefore, be to Him who hath made the histo ries of the past an admonition unto the present! Now of such instances are the tales called A Thousand Nights and a Night, together with their far-famed legends and wonders. Book Stories From the Thousand and One Nights Vol 16

Download or read book Stories From the Thousand and One Nights Vol 16 written by Charles W Eliot and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From the Thousand and One Nights, Vol. 16: The Arabian Nights' Entertainments Of a collection of fables, fairy-stories, and anecdotes of historical personages such as this, there can, of course, be no question of a single author. Both before and after they were placed in the mouth of Shahrazad. they were handed down by oral recitation, the usual form of story-telling among the Arabs. As in the case of our own popular ballads, whatever marks of individual authorship any one story may originally have borne, would be obliterated in the course of generations of tradition by word of mouth. Of the personality of an original editor or compiler, even, we have no trace. Long after writing had to some extent fixed their forms, the oral repetition went on; and some of them could be heard in Mohammedan countries almost down to our own times. In the two hundred years of their currency in the West, the stories of the "Nights" have engrafted themselves upon European culture. They have made the fairy-land of the Oriental imagination and the mode of life of the medieval Arab, his manners and his morals, familiar to young and old; and allusions to their incidents and personages are wrought into the language and literature of all the modern civilized peoples. Their mark is found upon music and painting as well as on letters and the common speech, as is witnessed by such diverse results of their inspiration as the music of Rimsky-Korsakoff, the illustrations of Parrish, and the marvelous idealization of their background and atmosphere in Tennyson's "Recollections of the Arabian Nights," "Barmecide Feast," "Open Sesame," "Old Lamps for New," "Solomon's Seal," "The Old Man of the Sea," "The Slave of the Lamp," "The Valley of Diamonds," "The Roc's Egg, Haroun al-Raschid and his Garden of Delight these and many more phrases and allusions of every-day occurrence suggest how pervasive has been the influence of this wonder-book of the mysterious East. The translation by E. W. Lane used here has been the standard English version for general reading for eighty years. The translations of "'Ali Baba" and "'Ala-ed-Din" are by S. Lane-Poole and for permission to use the latter we are indebted to Messrs. G. P. Putnam's Sons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Annotated Arabian Nights Tales from 1001 Nights The Annotated Books

Download or read book The Annotated Arabian Nights Tales from 1001 Nights The Annotated Books written by Paulo Lemos Horta and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 986 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[A]n electric new translation . . . Each page is adorned with illustrations and photographs from other translations and adaptations of the tales, as well as a wonderfully detailed cascade of notes that illuminate the stories and their settings. . . . The most striking feature of the Arabic tales is their shifting registers—prose, rhymed prose, poetry—and Seale captures the movement between them beautifully.” —Yasmine Al-Sayyad, New Yorker A magnificent and richly illustrated volume—with a groundbreaking translation framed by new commentary and hundreds of images—of the most famous story collection of all time. A cornerstone of world literature and a monument to the power of storytelling, the Arabian Nights has inspired countless authors, from Charles Dickens and Edgar Allan Poe to Naguib Mahfouz, Clarice Lispector, and Angela Carter. Now, in this lavishly designed and illustrated edition of The Annotated Arabian Nights, the acclaimed literary historian Paulo Lemos Horta and the brilliant poet and translator Yasmine Seale present a splendid new selection of tales from the Nights, featuring treasured original stories as well as later additions including “Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp” and “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves,” and definitively bringing the Nights out of Victorian antiquarianism and into the twenty-first century. For centuries, readers have been haunted by the homicidal King Shahriyar, thrilled by gripping tales of Sinbad’s seafaring adventures, and held utterly, exquisitely captive by Shahrazad’s stories of passionate romances and otherworldly escapades. Yet for too long, the English-speaking world has relied on dated translations by Richard Burton, Edward Lane, and other nineteenth-century adventurers. Seale’s distinctly contemporary and lyrical translations break decisively with this masculine dynasty, finally stripping away the deliberate exoticism of Orientalist renderings while reclaiming the vitality and delight of the stories, as she works with equal skill in both Arabic and French. Included within are famous tales, from “The Story of Sinbad the Sailor” to “The Story of the Fisherman and the Jinni,” as well as lesser-known stories such as “The Story of Dalila the Crafty,” in which the cunning heroine takes readers into the everyday life of merchants and shopkeepers in a crowded metropolis, and “The Story of the Merchant and the Jinni,” an example of a ransom frame tale in which stories are exchanged to save a life. Grounded in the latest scholarship, The Annotated Arabian Nights also incorporates the Hanna Diyab stories, for centuries seen as French forgeries but now acknowledged, largely as a result of Horta’s pathbreaking research, as being firmly rooted in the Arabic narrative tradition. Horta not only takes us into the astonishing twists and turns of the stories’ evolution. He also offers comprehensive notes on just about everything readers need to know to appreciate the tales in context, and guides us through the origins of ghouls, jinn, and other supernatural elements that have always drawn in and delighted readers. Beautifully illustrated throughout with art from Europe and the Arab and Persian world, the latter often ignored in English-language editions, The Annotated Arabian Nights expands the visual dimensions of the stories, revealing how the Nights have always been—and still are—in dialogue with fine artists. With a poignant autobiographical foreword from best-selling novelist Omar El Akkad and an illuminating afterword on the Middle Eastern roots of Hanna Diyab’s tales from noted scholar Robert Irwin, Horta and Seale have created a stunning edition of the Arabian Nights that will enchant and inform both devoted and novice readers alike.
