Book Indian Stories Classic Reprint

Download or read book Indian Stories Classic Reprint written by Cicero Newell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-11 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Stories Many years ago I lived among the Indians and knew them well. They were very different from the Indians of to-day. It would be hard now to find any Indians who are as close to the original traditions as were those old friends of mine. I want to give the boys and girls of to-day a chance to see the Indian as I saw him, and to know how he lived and what he thought. It is a pleasure to tell this story; for I came to love the Indian, and I had great respect for him and for his manner of life. When I first lived among the Dakotas, they were still strongly prejudiced in favor of the old ways, tradi tions and customs. They looked back-with regret upon earlier times, when they lived, unmolested, the wild, free life of the forests. They said that their ancestors were better men than they, because their ancestors lived closer to the Great Spirit, by whom the actions of all Indians were guided. I give the stories as they were told to me by old men who knew and loved the old-time ways, and who wanted to give me the real facts because they saw that I respected their customs and believed in them. In these stories I share with the boys and girls of to-day, who can never know the old-fashioned Indians, my recollections of a busy and happy life among them, at a time when they had not unlearned all the old customs. Book The Indian Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Indian Classic Reprint written by George Bird Grinnell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-30 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian This volume might be called one of recollections, for in it have been set down many memories of Indian life. The scenes described I have witnessed with my own eyes; the stories related are those which have been told me by the Indians themselves. These stories are introduced freely because the con crete example conveys a clearer idea of an event than an abstract statement, and because the story of the Indian should not be told wholly from the point of view of a race alien in thought, feeling, and culture. No narrative about any people can do them justice if written by one who is not in some degree in sympathy with them, and acquainted with their ways of thought and with the motives which govern them. Before an intelligent account of it can be given, the stranger race must be comprehended. Long association with Indi ans enables a white man ultimately to share their thought and feelings; and he who has reached this point understands the Indian. He understands that the red man is a savage and has savage qualities, yet he sees also that the most impressive characteristic of the Indian is his humanity. For in his Simplicity, his vanity, his sensitiveness to ridicule, his desire for re venge, and his fear of the supernatural, he is a child and acts like one. Download or read book The Boy s Catlin written by George Catlin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boy's Catlin: My Life Among the Indians The two large volumes from which this book has been mainly taken were compiled, as Mr. Catlin himself states, from letters written at the time to the Commercial Advertiser of New York City, and his notes made during the successive journeys they record. These letters were written under the shade of some neighbor ing tree, from the bed in his Wigwam, and always among the scenes he transcribes. To this immediateness is due the value which belongs to first impressions, the wealth of detail, accuracy of statement, and that engaging buoyancy of Spirit which per vades the two big books. Elsewhere there are no such data concerning the North American Indian in his primitive state either for the ethnologist or those who love romantic adventure, the charm of the untamed landscape, and life in the Open. But Mr. Catlin writes as a painter, susceptible to moods and pictorial impressions, rather than as a trained writer. This has obliged much condensation, the bringing together of widely separated material into chronological order, and large excisions in order to get into one book the wealth of material lavished on two large volumes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Joyful Star: Indian Stories for Camp Fire Girls In this collection of legends, my aim is to present to the reader a picture of the life and the ideals of the Indian maiden and mother as the;r are illustrated in the legends, folk-tales, and a few historical accounts from various tribes and nations of Indians in North and South America. The making of such a collection has proven a much more difficult piece of work than I had anticipated; but it has been most interesting and profitable. This work has opened wide a new world to me; it has filled me with respect and admiration for the Indian woman. It seems that the Indian woman is Wise, is brave, and withal is gentle, modest and affection ate: she is a devoted wife, living her life of labour with quiet cheerfulness: she is a tender mother, training her children with the most pre cise care, infusing into the minds of her young sons the ambition to become the bravest war riors, or the most skilled hunters, and educating her little daughters, from their very babyhood, to fill their place in the tribal life with the great est efficiency. From almost every phase of the Indian woman's life and experience, her white sister may learn lessons of inestimable value. With this thought, I am sending out these legends for the use of Camp Fire Girls and for all maidens who would turn aside for a time from the noisy highway, and follow the quiet trails through the forest, where once walked the Indian maiden with reverent love for the smallest flower at her feet, for it, too, partook of the nature of the Great Spirit, who cared for his children of the forest.
