Fin da giovane frequenta la bottega di un pittore fiorentino. A causa dei dissidi politici tra le varie regioni italiane, l'artista deve abbandonare la Toscana, per recarsi su invito del Cardinale a Roma, dove inizia a essere riconosciuta la sua notorietà. Nel 1501 rientra a Firenze, dove gli viene commissionata dall'Opera del Duomo una statua del David. Venne apprezzata così tanto da divenire il simbolo della città. Nel 1508 torna a Roma, dove Papa Giulio II, nonostante i rapporti tra i due fossero sempre tesi, gli commissiona gli affreschi della volta della Cappella Sistina: il lavoro più imponente della sua carriera. Morì quasi ottantanovenne a Roma, nel 1564. Secondo l'artista le sue opere erano imprigionate dentro il marmo e a lui spettava solo il compito di liberarle.
