Book Reviewing Mario Pratesi

Download or read book Reviewing Mario Pratesi written by Anne Urbancic and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prolific member of the Tuscan verismo school of literary realism, Mario Pratesi (1842–1921) was much respected during his career but sadly neglected after his death. Using Pratesi’s personal archive, now preserved at Victoria College in the University of Toronto, Reviewing Mario Pratesi takes Pratesi’s life and papers as the basis of a unique study of the literary culture of post-Unification Italy. Working with the original manuscripts, alongside previously unknown biographical materials and a vast collection of contemporary reviews, Anne Urbancic uses the methods of critique génétique not only to reconstruct the evolution of Pratesi’s works through their successive drafts and published versions, but also to document the impact of book reviews and the press on the development of Pratesi’s literary style. An insightful history of book reviewing as a genre and a detailed study of its role in Italian literary culture, Reviewing Mario Pratesi opens up a new area for investigation within Italian literary studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book A Boccaccian Renaissance

Download or read book A Boccaccian Renaissance written by Martin Eisner and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Boccaccian Renaissance brings together essays written by internationally recognized scholars in diverse national traditions to respond to the largely unaddressed question of Boccaccio’s impact on early modern literature and culture in Italy and Europe. Martin Eisner and David Lummus co-edit the first comprehensive examination in English of Boccaccio’s impact on the Renaissance. The essays investigate what it means to follow a Boccaccian model, in tandem with or in place of ancient authors such as Vergil or Cicero, or modern poets such as Dante or Petrarch. The book probes how deeply the Latin and vernacular works of Boccaccio spoke to the Renaissance humanists of the fifteenth century. It treats not only the literary legacy of Boccaccio’s works but also their paradoxical importance for the history of the Italian language and reception in theater and books of conduct. While the geographical focus of many of the essays is on Italy, the volume concludes with three studies that open new inroads to understanding his influence on Spanish, French, and English writers across the sixteenth century. The book will appeal strongly to scholars and students of Boccaccio, the Italian and European Renaissance, and Italian literature. Contributors: Jonathan Combs-Schilling, Rhiannon Daniels, Martin Eisner, Simon Gilson, James Hankins, Timothy Kircher, Victoria Kirkham, David Lummus, Ronald L. Martinez, Ignacio Navarrete, Brian Richardson, Marc Schachter, Michael Sherberg, and Janet Levarie Smarr

Book Text Linguistics and Classical Studies

Download or read book Text Linguistics and Classical Studies written by Mauro Giuffrè and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work represents a significant scientific advancement on text linguistics from three different viewpoints. The first chapter provides an overview of the history of text linguistics from a broader perspective than usual, offering a complete reference framework. The second chapter presents the procedural approach to the study of text linguistics in a concise way, including a critical comparison with other perspectives. The third chapter constructs a very unusual bridge between theoretical linguistics and classical studies in that it takes a literary text in Latin from the early imperial period as its case study. This combination is rare, as theoretical linguists are usually oriented to modern languages and classicists are not generally inclined to the study of formal linguistics. It also offers an interesting perspective that intersects the studies of general linguistics and glottology, which makes this volume of interest to general linguists, classicists, philologists and literary critics alike.

Book Reading Dante in Renaissance Italy

Download or read book Reading Dante in Renaissance Italy written by Simon Gilson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simon Gilson's new volume provides the first in-depth account of the critical and editorial reception in Renaissance Italy, particularly Florence, Venice and Padua, of the work of Dante Alighieri (1265–1321). Gilson investigates a range of textual frameworks and related contexts that influenced the way in which Dante's work was produced and circulated, from editing and translation to commentaries, criticism and public lectures. In so doing he modifies the received notion that Dante and his work were eclipsed during the Renaissance. Central themes of investigation include the contestation of Dante's authority as a 'classic' writer and the various forms of attack and defence employed by his detractors and partisans. The book pays close attention not only to the Divine Comedy but also to the Convivio and other of Dante's writings, and explores the ways in which the reception of these works was affected by contemporary developments in philology, literary theory, philosophy, theology, science and printing.

Book Approaches to Teaching Petrarch s Canzoniere and the Petrarchan Tradition

Download or read book Approaches to Teaching Petrarch s Canzoniere and the Petrarchan Tradition written by Christopher Kleinhenz and published by Modern Language Association. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important authors of the Middle Ages, Petrarch occupies a complex position: historically, he is a medieval author, but, philosophically, he heralds humanism and the Renaissance. Teachers of Petrarch's Canzoniere and his formative influence on the canon of Western European poetry face particular challenges. Petrarch's poetic style brings together the classical tradition, Christianity, an exalted sense of poetic vocation, and an obsessive love for Laura during her life and after her death in ways that can seem at once very strange and--because of his style's immense influence--very familiar to students. This volume aims to meet the varied needs of instructors, whether they teach Petrarch in Italian or in translation, in surveys or in specialized courses, by providing a wealth of pedagogical approaches to Petrarch and his legacy. Part 1, "Materials," reviews the extensive bibliography on Petrarch and Petrarchism, covering editions and translations of the Canzoniere, secondary works, and music and other audiovisual and electronic resources. Part 2, "Approaches," opens with essays on teaching the Canzoniere and continues with essays on teaching the Petrarchan tradition. Some contributors use the design and structure of the Canzoniere as entryways into the work; others approach it through discussion of Petrarch's literary influences and subject matter or through the context of medieval Christianity and culture. The essays on Petrarchism map the poet's influence on the Italian lyric tradition as well as on other national literatures, including Spanish, French, English, and Russian.
