Book excerpt: 1. Juice extraction remained constant for sorgo stalks kept wet, but it decreased gradually for dry stalks during 2 weeks storage. 2. Extraction losses were mainly due to evaporation. Brix values increased as extraction values decreased during storage. 3. Sucrose losses were negligible for stalks kept wet and were only slight when stalks were dry during storage of sugar varieties like Rex. 4. Coefficient of apparent putity decreased slightly when stalks were kept wet and decreased significantly for dry stalks of sugar varieties. 5. Acidity was not affected by length of storage or wet and dry treatments. 6. Inversion took place more rapidly in sirup varieties, such as Iceberg, Sart, and Wiley, during storage than in sugar varieties. 7. Storing dry for 6 days reduced cystallization and improved sirup quality without reducing yields of sirup per ton of stalks. 8. Storing wet counteracted the normal benefits of storage on sirup quality. 9. Protecting (storing in a shed) stalks had no beneficial effect on sirup quality and yield unless processing was done during a period of simulated rainfall. 10. Stripped stalks of Sart, Trac, and Wiley made good sirup 1 day of storage sooner than did unstripped shocked stalks. Unstripped shocked stalks of wiley kept wet made inferior but acceptable sirup, but Tracy and Sart did not make commercial-grade sirup. 11. In general, dextrose and levulose increased during the first 10 days of storage, whereas sucrose decreased. All three sugars tended to level off during the last 4 (...).

Book excerpt: Research was conducted by the Texas Agricultural Station and the U.S. Department of Agriculture at Substation No. 1 near Beeville during 7 crop years (1949-50) through 1855-56) to develop methods and procedures for on-the-farm drying and storage of sorghum grain in South Texas. High moisture and excessive trash (stems, leaves and grass seed) lead to insect, mold and heat damage, and are the basis for most of the troubles encoutered in storing grain. High moisture may result from the leakage of outside moisture through bin walls or from the placing of high-moisture grain in storage. A tight structure for protecting the grain from the weather, insects and rodents was found to be essential. Properly constructed conventional wood or steel buildings and bins, and a cement plaster bin painted with a water-proofing paint and provided with adequate ventilation at the grain surface, were satisfactory for storing sorghum grain. This book is intended to fill in a void to bridge the gap by documenting all aspects of recent research and development in sorghum encompassing all the progress made, milestones achieved across globe in genetic diversity assessment, crop improvement and production, strategies for high yield, biotic and abiotic stress resistance, grain and stover quality aspects, storage, nutrition, health and industrial applications, biotechnological applications to increase production, including regional and global policy perspectives and developmental needs.
