Book Stones and Quarries Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stones and Quarries Classic Reprint written by J. Allen Howe and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stones and Quarries In this small volume an attempt has been made to place before the reader a broad general view of the stone industry, to show what part it plays in the life of the community and to give an outline of the methods and machinery employed in its development. Within the limits assigned to the books in this series it has not been possible to do more than indicate in the briefest way the main features of this great industry and to point out some of the characters of the commodities handled therein. There are branches of the stone industry that take so prominent a place in the activities of civilized nations that separate treatment is required to do them justice, thus Cement manufacture, which obtains its raw material largely from quarries, forms the subject of a separate volume. A certain vagueness about the natural boundaries of the subject will be observable, and such questions as What is to be included in "Stone"? or, Is a stone-mine to be regarded as a quarry? have been answered by the light of convenience rather than that of logic or consistency. The author desires to express his grateful thanks to the following firms who have kindly given assistance with illustrations: The Bramley Engineering Co., Ltd., Crosby Lockwood Co., John Freeman Son, Ltd., the Council of the Geologists' Association, Hadfields, Ltd., the Hardy Patent Pick Co., Ltd., Ruston Hornsby, Ltd., the Sullivan Engineering Co., and the proprietors of the journals: the British Builder, the Quarry, and the Stone Trades Journal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stones: For Building and Decoration The work herewith presented is based upon the author's handbook and catalogue of the collection of building and ornamental stones in the United States National Museum at Washington. It differs from that work, however, in many important particulars, several new chapters having been added, others rewritten and the whole so far as possible brought down to date. A portion of the added matter is essentially the same, though in a somewhat different form, as originally appeared in the columns of Stone, the American Architect, the Scientific American Supplement, and other of our industrial journals. The writer's experience in preparing the extensive collection in the National Museum, at Washington, as well as its partial duplicate in the American Museum in New York City, has afforded him ample opportunity for becoming acquainted with the quarry products of the country at large, while extensive field trips, particularly in the eastern and extreme western United States, have given him a practical insight into the resources of the regions as well as some knowledge concerning the usual methods of quarrying and working. That there is a demand for a comprehensive and not too technical a work on this subject has been emphatically impressed upon the writer many times during the past few years. How far the pages herewith presented shall supply this demand, it is left for the public to decide. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-12-02 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quarries of Bluestone and Other Sandstones in the Upper Devonian of New York State Four geologic groups are represented in this territory, viz, Hamilton, Portage, Chemung and Catskill, but the distinctions between these groups are in part paleontologic and may be dis regarded in a discussion of the economic geology of the area. The main belt of country producing the even bedded and compact sandstone suitable for agging and house trimmings known commercially as bluestone begins on the western side of the Hudson river in the southwestern part of Albany county and stretches southward through Greene, Ulster, Sulli van, Delaware and as far west as Broome county. Besides this main belt there are scattered localities in the central part of the state, producing bluestone, at Oneonta, Rock Rift, Oxford, King's Ferry, Trumansburg and Portageville. The district including Greene, Ulster, Delaware, Sullivan and Broome counties is the most productive, the products reaching the markets by the way of the Hudson river, and Erie and Ontario and Western railroads. The quarries in this district are all small and as a rule short lived. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book An Ancient Quarry in Indian Territory Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Ancient Quarry in Indian Territory Classic Reprint written by William Henry Holmes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Ancient Quarry in Indian Territory In many places evidences of manufacture have been observed, but usually the sites are nothing more than small shops where individual implements have been shaped or small masses have been worked up. It is apparent to the student of flaked stone toels that these limited sheps could not have furnished the multitudes of fine Specimens dis tributed over every part of the valley, and that the existence of great quarries must in time be discovered. These quarry sites, if such there are, may be so hidden away in wild and rugged regions and so obscured by forests that the attention of white settlers has never been called to them. An important quarry site, considerably beyond the limits of the province referred to, being nearly 300 miles southwest of St. Louis. Has recently come into notice. It is hardly to be supposed that the flint supply of the Missouri and Mississippi valleys could in any large part have been derived from. This source, for the task of transporta tion would have taxed even the marvelous patience and endurance of our aboriginal workers in stone. The material produced on this site, however, corresponds very closely with that used in the St. Louis region, and a study of the refuse of the quarry shops demonstrates the fact that the classes of tools made are identical in manyin stances with those found so plentifully in that region. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building Stones and Clays: Their Origin, Characters and Examination The present volume may in some sense be considered as an outgrowth of the author's previous work on cementing materials, for it deals with natural materials which are closely related, either as constituents or as competitors, to the manufactured products therein discussed. It may be noted that little space has been devoted to a de scription of the local distribution of building stones and clays. The inclusion of such data, relative to products which are nat urally so common and so widely distributed, tends to convert a general treatise into a mere directory of the quarry and clay product industries. The extensive reference lists which are pre sented, however, will serve to point out where information re garding the stone or clays of any particular state may be found. Attention should also be directed to the chapters relative to the examination and valuation of clay and stone properties. So far as known to the writer, most of the material therein pre sented has not been touched upon in earlier works on these subjects. Book Safety in Stone Quarrying Classic Reprint

Download or read book Safety in Stone Quarrying Classic Reprint written by Oliver Bowles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Safety in Stone Quarrying The Bureau of Mines, in connection with its work relating to the increase of safety in the mineral industries, is investigating quarries and quarrying methods. This paper describes the results of an investigation of safety conditions in stone quarrying - more especially in the quarrying of marble. Its purpose is to point out the chief causes of accidents in stone quarries and to suggest preventive measures and devices. Many of the suggestions are applicable to all types of rock excavation, but relate chiefly to marble quarrying. Accident prevention is considered from three points of view - safety in equipment, safety in quarrying methods, and safety through proper care. The paper also describes methods of first aid in case of accident and includes a list of typical quarry accidents that have come to the writer's notice. Book Report on the Building and Ornamental Stones of Canada Vol 2

Download or read book Report on the Building and Ornamental Stones of Canada Vol 2 written by W. A. Parks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Building and Ornamental Stones of Canada, Vol. 2: Maritime Provinces The field work in connexion with the present report dealing with the building and ornamental stones of the Maritime Provinces was carried on during the summer of 1911, and occupied a period of two and one-half months. In all, about sixty quarries were visited, as well as a considerable number of abandoned quarries and prospects. Owing to the difficulty of access, and the unsatisfactory outcrop of stone on undeveloped or long abandoned properties, it was found that little additional information was to be gained by an actual visit. In a country where the occurrences of stone, more or less suitable to purposes of construction, are practically innumerable, it was found necessary to use considerable discretion in the selection of localities worthy of close examination. While the present report is by no means confined to quarries in actual operation, it makes no pretense of including every opening that has been made for the production of building stone. It is thought, however, that every important district is represented by a typical example, and that every stone, commercially available at the present time, has received due consideration. The writer desires to acknowledge the kindness of all the quarry owners and operators throughout the district, whose willingness to impart information has greatly facilitated the preparation of this report. Book Report on the Building and Ornamental Stones of Canada 1917 Vol 5

Download or read book Report on the Building and Ornamental Stones of Canada 1917 Vol 5 written by Wm. A. Parks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-03 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Building and Ornamental Stones of Canada, 1917, Vol. 5: Province of British Columbia All quarries which have produced structural stone in commercial quan tity were visited, and in addition, a number of others which have been worked for crushed stone, lime-making, etc. It was thought advisable to include quarries of this type in order to ascertain if they offer any encourage ment from the present point of view. The information thus gained is chie y of a negative character, but it has been included in the report, as practically any sort of stone is of possible value as building material. Quarries of building stone in the narrower sense are those which are oper ated solely or primarily for the production of structural stone; it is thought that all such quarries are included in the report. While most of the quarries operated for other purposes were visited, the report does not pretend to be complete in this respect. In addition to actual quarries, a large number of outcrops were examined, to which attention was drawn by the existing literature on 'the subject, or by information obtained from private sources. It is manifest that considerable discretion had to be used in selecting the localities of this type to be visited, as some of the reported occurrences are too remote or inaccessible to make a visit possible in the time available for the investigation. In accordance with the plan followed in the earlier volumes of this report, a geological basis of classification has been adopted, although it is freely admitted that this method is less satisfactory in the case of British Columbia. The reason for this lies in the great number of formations, and in the lack of definite correlation of the formations of different districts. A strict adherence to the geological method of classification, or an attempt to present the subject to the satisfaction of the purely scientific reader, would obscure the economic essentials under a mass of detail quite foreign to the purpose of this report. In the chapter dealing with the geology of the province, certain geological tables are used: these are intentionally incomplete, and are not intended for the use of scientists, but merely to give the average reader a rough idea of the position in the time-scale of certain strata capable of yielding building stone.
