Book Cut These Words into My Stone

Download or read book Cut These Words into My Stone written by and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2013-01-31 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lively ancient epitaphs in this bilingual collection fit together like small mosaic tiles, forming a vivid portrait of Greek society. Cut These Words into My Stone offers evidence that ancient Greek life was not only celebrated in great heroic epics, but was also commemorated in hundreds of artfully composed verse epitaphs. They have been preserved in anthologies and gleaned from weathered headstones. Three-year-old Archianax, playing near a well, Was drawn down by his own silent reflection. His mother, afraid he had no breath left, Hauled him back up wringing wet. He had a little. He didn't taint the nymphs' deep home. He dozed off in her lap. He's sleeping still. These words, translated from the original Greek by poet and filmmaker Michael Wolfe, mark the passing of a child who died roughly 2,000 years ago. Ancient Greek epitaphs honor the lives, and often describe the deaths, of a rich cross section of Greek society, including people of all ages and classes— paupers, fishermen, tyrants, virgins, drunks, foot soldiers, generals—and some non-people—horses, dolphins, and insects. With brief commentary and notes, this bilingual collection of 127 short, witty, and often tender epigrams spans 1,000 years of the written word. Cut These Words into My Stone provides an engaging introduction to this corner of classical literature that continues to speak eloquently in our time.

Book Discovering North American Rock Art

Download or read book Discovering North American Rock Art written by Lawrence L. Loendorf and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2016-05 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the high plains of Canada to caves in the southeastern United States, images etched into and painted on stone by ancient Native Americans have aroused in observers the desire to understand their origins and meanings. Rock paintings and engravings can be found in nearly every state and province, and each region has its own distinctive story of discovery and evolving investigation of the rock art record. Rock art in the twenty-first century enjoys a large and growing popularity fueled by scholarly research and public interest alike. This book explores the history of rock art research in North America and is the only volume in the past twenty-five years to provide coverage of the subject on a continental scale. Written by contributors active in rock art research, it examines sites that provide a cross-section of regions and topics and complements existing books on rock art by offering new information, insights, and approaches to research. The first part of the volume explores different regional approaches to the study of rock art, including a set of varied responses to a single site as well as an overview of broader regional research investigations. It tells how Writing-on-Stone in southern Alberta, Canada, reflects changing thought about rock art from the 1870s to today; it describes the role of avocational archaeologists in the Mississippi Valley, where rock art styles differ on each side of the river; it explores discoveries in southwestern mountains and southeastern caves; and it integrates the investigation of cupules along Georgia’s Yellow River into a full study of a site and its context. The book also compares the differences between rock art research in the United States and France: from the outset, rock art was of only marginal interest to most U.S. archaeologists, while French prehistorians considered cave art an integral part of archaeological research. The book’s second part is concerned with working with the images today and includes coverage of gender interests, government sponsorship, the role of amateurs in research, and chronometric studies. Much has changed in our understanding of rock art since Cotton Mather first wrote in 1714 of a strange inscription on a Massachusetts boulder, and the cutting-edge contributions in this volume tell us much about both the ancient place of these enduring images and their modern meanings. Discovering North American Rock Art distills today’s most authoritative knowledge of the field and is an essential volume for both specialists and hobbyists.

Book The Golden Bough A Study of Magic and Religion

Download or read book The Golden Bough A Study of Magic and Religion written by James George Frazer and published by anboco. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 1261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary aim of this book is to explain the remarkable rule which regulated the succession to the priesthood of Diana at Aricia. When I first set myself to solve the problem more than thirty years ago, I thought that the solution could be propounded very briefly, but I soon found that to render it probable or even intelligible it was necessary to discuss certain more general questions, some of which had hardly been broached before. In successive editions the discussion of these and kindred topics has occupied more and more space, the enquiry has branched out in more and more directions, until the two volumes of the original work have expanded into twelve. Meantime a wish has often been expressed that the book should be issued in a more compendious form. This abridgment is an attempt to meet the wish and thereby to bring the work within the range of a wider circle of readers. While the bulk of the book has been greatly reduced, I have endeavoured to retain its leading principles, together with an amount of evidence sufficient to illustrate them clearly. The language of the original has also for the most part been preserved, though here and there the exposition has been somewhat condensed. In order to keep as much of the text as possible I have sacrificed all the notes, and with them all exact references to my authorities. Readers who desire to ascertain the source of any particular statement must therefore consult the larger work, which is fully documented and provided with a complete bibliography.

Book Crystals for Energy Healing

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive sourcebook of 100 essential crystals for spiritual healing and all-round protection is packed with practical advice and fascinating information. Not only will you find out about the crystal's attributes, legendary power, and holistic benefits, but also about each crystal's specific energy to enhance, heal, or protect you. Crystals are the most natural, empowering force we can work with to promote spiritual balance and protect us from exposure to physical or psychic negativity. For thousands of years, crystals have been used for their powerful healing energy and to protect the wearer from negative forces. The ancient Taoists believed sacred stones vibrated with 'chi' or universal energy; the Greeks and Romans believed they embodied the gods and the planets; indigenous peoples believed they were alive with spirit. Black stones like obsidian have been used for centuries to protect from evil, and amethyst is still considered the power stone of spirituality, creating a protective shield around the body and promoting deeper levels of awareness. Crystals for Energy Healing includes introductory chapters on what crystals are, both their scientific legacy and their magical one; caring for and choosing crystals; and the importance of chakras and color in spiritual healing. There is also a practical chapter about working with these stones specifically chosen for protection and spiritual healing. The alphabetical sourcebook section that follows provides information about the uses and benefits of each crystal listed.

Book excerpt: A guide to quartz crystals from both an ancestral and scientific point of view, with the mission of helping readers identify their mind patterns and wounds to reconnect with the authentic self. What is it that has drawn scientists and healers around the world to crystal technology, and what are the similarities between the ways these two groups have used the stones? In this book, crystal healer and holistic therapist Beatriz Singer answers these questions--and more. She takes readers on a journey to understand the many wonders of quartz crystals, so that we can use their powers to bring peace and healing to ourselves and the world.
