Book Stone Age in New Jersey Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stone Age in New Jersey Classic Reprint written by Charles Conrad Abbott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stone Age in New Jersey Figure 1 represents an average specimen of the flat-bottomed, peak backed stones, known in some localities as turtle-backs, a name that admirably describes their general appearance. Made of the ordinary Delaware River sandstone, this specimen measures four inches in length and two and one-half inches in width. The bottom is nearly a perfect plane, and shows, by the slight indentations and scratch-like markings, that it has been chipped into its present shape, and not accidentally broken. Its greatest thickness is one and one-eighth inches the peak, or highest point of the back, being in the middle of the specimen, meas ured lengthwise, but rather nearer one side than the other, or off the center; but the broader side of the back does not appear better adapted for cutting than the narrower or more abruptly descending side. Although this stone, from long exposure, has become porous upon the surface, the edges still remain sharp, regular, and exhibit an amount of skill in flint-chipping about equal to that of the ordinary slate lance-heads, spear and arrow points. Close examination shows that the back has been worked into its present shape by a series of powerful blows, or by pressure, leaving large surfaces usually, several of the planes being those of a single detachment of a fragment of the rock, in some instances extending from the peak to the edge of the implement. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How only violence and catastrophes have consistently reduced inequality throughout world history Are mass violence and catastrophes the only forces that can seriously decrease economic inequality? To judge by thousands of years of history, the answer is yes. Tracing the global history of inequality from the Stone Age to today, Walter Scheidel shows that inequality never dies peacefully. Inequality declines when carnage and disaster strike and increases when peace and stability return. The Great Leveler is the first book to chart the crucial role of violent shocks in reducing inequality over the full sweep of human history around the world. Ever since humans began to farm, herd livestock, and pass on their assets to future generations, economic inequality has been a defining feature of civilization. Over thousands of years, only violent events have significantly lessened inequality. The "Four Horsemen" of leveling—mass-mobilization warfare, transformative revolutions, state collapse, and catastrophic plagues—have repeatedly destroyed the fortunes of the rich. Scheidel identifies and examines these processes, from the crises of the earliest civilizations to the cataclysmic world wars and communist revolutions of the twentieth century. Today, the violence that reduced inequality in the past seems to have diminished, and that is a good thing. But it casts serious doubt on the prospects for a more equal future. An essential contribution to the debate about inequality, The Great Leveler provides important new insights about why inequality is so persistent—and why it is unlikely to decline anytime soon.

Book Subordination

Download or read book Subordination written by Clare Burton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-11 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subordinationpresents a survey of some of the most important ideas developed within feminism since the 1970s. Among the central themes addressed are: the origins of women’s subordination; the private/public split; the nature and the role of domestic labour; the impact of psychoanalysis on feminist theory; the relationship between the State and women’s subordination. One of the book’s purposes is to draw together strands of thought and debate often kept separate. Throughout, the major theoretical developments in Britain, the United States and Australia are reviewed within a comparative perspective. Consistently, the focus of attention is on how, and how far, theorists in these countries have been able to point to ways of explaining the changing but enduring nature of sexual inequalities.

Book Picturesque Springfield New Jersey

Download or read book Picturesque Springfield New Jersey written by Jasper Colton Salter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Picturesque Springfield, New Jersey: One of the First Places for Home Building Within Easy Reach of New York During the great advance that has taken place in values in all portions of the State of New Jersey, and the many new towns that have sprung into existence, springfield has done little to attract settlers from New York. This has been partly due to the fact that her property has been owned by people who have been content to live quietly on their estates without attempting to convert them into villa plots and building lots, but more particularly to the fact that though but a mile from the railroad station, the roads were sandy and poor. The beauty of this quiet old town, however, with its quaint buildings, wide. Sleepy streets, shaded by noble elms, its verdant surrounding meadows and willow banked streams, has each year been the means of attracting new comers, and now that I'nion County has spent upwards of in macadamizing its roads, which, together with those of the famous Orange district, are noted from Maine to California as being the best system of roads in the United States, a transformation has taken place.
