Book Separation of Atlantic Herring Clupea Harengus Stocks in the Southern Gulf of St Lawrence Using Digitized Otolith Morphometrics and Discriminant Function Analysis

Download or read book Separation of Atlantic Herring Clupea Harengus Stocks in the Southern Gulf of St Lawrence Using Digitized Otolith Morphometrics and Discriminant Function Analysis written by S. N. Messieh and published by Dartmouth, N.S. : Fisheries and Oceans, Canada. This book was released on 1989 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The identification of Atlantic herring stocks inhabiting both sides of the northern Atlantic has been the subject of numerous investigations for many years. In more recent years, the discreteness of the spring and autumn herring populations in the Gulf of St. Lawrence was established, a separation important for delineating proper fishery management units. Otolith characteristics, such as shape and first year's growth, were used in both the Gulf and Newfoundland regions, but the method used requires well-trained technicians and was criticized because of its subjectivity. A semi-automated microcomputer-based measuring system was developed for otolith measurements in the Gulf region to eliminate such subjectivity. The method uses a microscope with a drawing tube and a digitizer interfaced to a personal computer which analyzes the digitized otolith measurements using software packages. This report presents results using this system to separate herring spawning groups by otolith morphometrics.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This document was part of the information presented at a regional peer review of the assessment framework for the fall spawning component of Atlantic herring in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (sGSL) (NAFO Div. 4T). The stock area for the sGSL Atlantic herring extends from the north shore of the Gaspe Peninsula (Quebec) to the northern tip of Cape Breton Island (Nova Scotia) and includes the Magdalen Islands. The two seasonal herring spawning components that are assessed for the sGSL are spring spawners and fall spawners. SGSL herring are harvested by an inshore gillnet fleet fishing in coastal waters and a purse seine fleet of a maximum of 12 seiners (>65') fishing in deeper water. Since 1999, fall spawners have comprised 70% or more of the total catch in the sGSL. Market conditions have played a large role in determining catch levels in this fishery. There are approximately 3,000 herring bait licenses for personal use in the sGSL. In 2012 and 2013, there was an average of 712 actively fishing gillnet commercial licenses out of a possible total of 2,590 license holders. The assessment for each herring component currently provides a F0.1 fishing level calculation. Gillnet catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) and acoustic survey indices were used to calibrate the population models. Spawning stock biomass reference points consistent with the Precautionary Approach were derived for both spawning components in 2005. The latest assessment of the sGSL herring stocks in 2013 showed pathological problems including blocks of residuals and large retrospective patterns when fitting the current population model. Similar problems were encountered in past assessments of the sGSL herring stocks"--Abstract.

Book Modeling Consumption Rates Of Atlantic Herring Clupea Harengus

Download or read book Modeling Consumption Rates Of Atlantic Herring Clupea Harengus written by Mitchell A. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pelagic forage fishes play critical roles in productive marine food webs by providing a link between zooplankton and piscivores and transferring energy from feeding grounds to other ecosystems. The amount of energy moved to higher trophic levels or new systems is directly linked to the consumption rate of pelagic forage fishes. In the Gulf of Maine, Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) is the dominant forage fish; the purpose of this study is to determine their specific consumption rate (g prey/g fish/day). Using fish collected in autumn 2012 and spring 2013, we applied a mercury mass-balance model to estimate individual and population consumption of Atlantic herring in the Gulf of Maine. Our results suggest that the specific consumption rate increases from age 1.5 until age 6 (years) and then asymptotes. These estimates were contradictory to much of what exists in the literature; for most fishes, specific consumption estimates decrease with age and overall are much lower than our estimates. We looked further into our results to explore the underlying cause of the increase in specific consumption rate. We combined the mercury mass-balance model with a Wisconsin (WI) bioenergetics model and ran several simulations adjusting the most sensitive factors in each--prey mercury in the former and activity in the latter. The results of our simulations showed that an increase in activity relative to age and mass can best explain the increase in the consumption rate of Adult herring. This suggests that an ontogenetic shift to migration in adult Atlantic herring results in increased energy demand with age, and ultimately increased consumption.
