Book excerpt: The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish has used a weir to assess the annual runs of coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) to the Buskin River on Kodiak Island since 1985. This report presents weir counts, harvest, and age-composition data collected for 2018 and 2019. In 2018, the inriver run estimate was 4,523 fish; the estimated sport and subsistence harvests were 1,793 fish and 1,171 fish, respectively, and the commercial harvest was zero. The estimated escapement was 4,164 coho salmon. Age-2.1 fish composed an estimated 78.9% of the inriver run and the male-to-female ratio was 2.4:1. In 2019, the inriver run estimate was 5,537 fish; the estimated sport and subsistence harvests were 934 fish and 340 fish, respectively, and the commercial harvest was zero. The estimated escapement was 5,350 coho salmon. Age-2.1 fish composed 52.3% of the inriver run and the male-to-female ratio was 1.1:1.

Book excerpt: The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish, has assessed the annual run of Buskin River sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) on Kodiak Island, Alaska, since 1990. Buskin River sockeye salmon weir counts were 4,284, 12,297, 7,741, and 2,330 fish for 2018–2021, respectively. Weir counts for Lake Louise were 83, 73, 53, and 1,896 sockeye salmon for 2018–2021, respectively. Reported annual subsistence harvests for the Buskin River Section were 474, 836, and 1,620 sockeye salmon for 2018–2020, respectively; accurate harvest is not available for 2021 at this time. In interviews conducted with 11 subsistence users in 2019, 100% reported that the Buskin River was a traditional fishing location, and 73% reported that they subsistence fished in other areas. Interviews were not conducted in 2018 due to a low run or in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19. Enumerated sockeye salmon spawning escapement for the entire drainage (Buskin Lake and Louise Lake weirs) was 4,367, 12,370, 7,794, and 4,226 fish for 2018–2021, respectively. Based on a Bayesian spawner–recruitment analysis of the Buskin Lake system, estimated spawning escapement for maximum sustained yield is about 5,700 fish (95% credibility interval = 4,300–8,000). A sustained yield probability analysis supports the current Buskin Lake system biological escapement goal (BEG) range of 5,000–8,000 sockeye salmon. Age-1.2, -1.3, -2.2, and -2.3 sockeye salmon composed 93–99% of the Buskin River run. Male to female ratios for the Buskin River were between 0.6 and 1.1 to 1 for 2018–2021. Samples taken from the Lake Louise sockeye salmon run and the subsistence harvest were too low to provide reliable estimates of age and sex composition.

In 2014, the lower weir count was 8,413; the estimated sport, subsistence, and commercial harvests were 5,388, 1,529, and 1 fish, respectively; estimated escapement was 7,335; age-2.1 fish composed 82.8% of the inriver run; and the male to female ratio was 1.9:1. In 2015, a complete lower weir count was not possible due to low water and late run timing. The estimated sport, subsistence, and commercial harvests were 4,889, 884, and 13, respectively. Only 5 fish were aged in 2015; sex and length were probably not sampled representatively due to the timing of sampling. In 2016, the estimated lower weir count was 2,513; the estimated sport, subsistence, and commercial harvests were 1,895, 496, and zero, respectively; estimated escapement was 2,134 coho salmon; age-2.1 fish composed 89.7% of the inriver run; and the male to female ratio was 1.2:1. In 2017, the estimated lower weir count was 5,559 fish; the estimated sport, subsistence, and commercial harvests were 2,337, 300, and zero, respectively; estimated escapement was 5,092; age-2.1 fish composed 66.8% of the inriver run; and the male to female ratio was 1.1:1. A Bayesian full probability spawner–recruit analysis of all relevant data gave an estimated spawning escapement at maximum sustainable yield (MSY) of approximately 7,000 coho salmon (90% credibility interval of 4,800–13,350). Assuming a 10-year average sport harvest (781 fish), the inriver run estimated for MSY is about 6,220 coho salmon; the estimated exploitation rate at MSY is 41%.

This report presents weir counts, harvest, and age-composition data collected between 2011 and 2013 as well as a spawner?recruit analysis. In 2011, the Buskin River weir count was 6,026 coho salmon; the estimated sport harvest was 3,640; the reported subsistence harvest was 287; and the commercial harvest was 197 coho salmon. Age-2.1 fish composed 72% of the total run and the male to female ratio was 1.1:1. Estimated escapement was 5,298 coho salmon. In 2012, the weir count was 5,291 coho salmon; the estimated sport harvest was 1,926; the reported subsistence harvest was 984; and the commercial harvest was 10. Age-2.1 fish composed 92% of the total run and the male to female ratio was 5.8:1. Estimated escapement was 4,906 coho salmon. In 2013, the estimated weir count was 5,959 coho salmon; the estimated sport harvest was 5,294; the reported subsistence harvest was 611; and the commercial harvest was 40. Age-2.1 fish composed 82% of the escapement and the male to female ratio was 0.93:1. Estimated escapement was 4,900 coho salmon. A full probability spawner?recruit analysis of all relevant data gave an estimated spawning escapement at maximum sustainable yield (MSY) of approximately 7,300 coho salmon (90% credibility interval of 5,140?12,000). Assuming a 10-year average sport harvest, the inriver run estimated for MSY is about 8,150 coho salmon and the estimated exploitation rate at MSY is 40%.

Postseason escapement foot surveys will be conducted for the remaining 6 KRS rivers without SEGs (Monashka Creek, Pillar Creek, Sargent Creek, Russian Creek, Salonie Creek, and Roslyn River). The Pasagshak River coho salmon escapement will also be estimated with a temporally stratified mark–recapture study.

Book excerpt: From 2017 to 2020, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries, conducted stock assessment programs to estimate the escapement and harvest of Chilkat Lake sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka). Escapement was estimated with a Dual-frequency Identification Sonar (DIDSON) and weir near the outlet of Chilkat Lake, and age, length, and sex data were collected and analyzed each year. Sockeye salmon escapements, based on expanded DIDSON counts, were 88,197 fish in 2017, 108,047 fish in 2018, 136,091 fish in 2019, and 50,746 fish in 2020. Estimated escapements fell within the biological escapement goal range of 70,000–150,000 sockeye salmon in all but one year (2020). A pair of fish wheels were operated on the Chilkat River to provide inseason information on Chilkat sockeye salmon run strength to assist in management of the District 15 commercial drift gillnet fishery. Genetic stock identification was conducted to determine the stock composition of sockeye salmon harvested annually in the District 15 commercial drift gillnet fishery. Estimated commercial harvests of Chilkat Lake sockeye salmon were 5,698 fish in 2017, 19,235 fish in 2018, 40,935 fish in 2019, and 8,776 fish in 2020. Estimated annual harvest rates (not including subsistence or sport harvests) ranged from 6.1% (2017) to 23.1% (2019), and Chilkat Lake sockeye salmon accounted for an estimated 14.3% (2017) to 23.5% (2018) of the annual commercial sockeye salmon harvest in District 15. Zooplankton populations at Chilkat Lake have improved steadily since the late 2000s; historical peaks in the abundance of copepods and cladocerans (particularly Daphnia), the preferred prey of juvenile sockeye salmon, were observed in 2020 and 2019, respectively.

Coho salmon smolt at the Berners River and Hugh Smith Lake are captured, implanted with a coded wire tag (CWT), sampled for age and length, adipose fin clipped, and released unharmed. Concurrent to smolt tagging, a project to collect scales of a known age requires capturing and implanting a CWT into coho salmon fry, later to be recovered as smolt and adults. Returning adult coho salmon are examined for the presence of CWTs, enumerated, and sampled for age, length, and sex. These data are used in combination with estimates of harvest of tagged fish by Alaska Department of Fish and Game port sampling and Mark, Tag and Age Laboratory programs to estimate a variety of parameters for the stocks. These programs, conducted continuously since the 1980s, provide detailed information on long-term population dynamics useful for establishing escapement goals and for managing commercial fisheries that target coho salmon."--Page 1
