Book excerpt: The topics discussed are the stochastic cooling systems in use at Fermilab and some of the techniques that have been employed to meet the particular requirements of the anti-proton source. Stochastic cooling at Fermilab became of paramount importance about 5 years ago when the anti-proton source group at Fermilab abandoned the electron cooling ring in favor of a high flux anti-proton source which relied solely on stochastic cooling to achieve the phase space densities necessary for colliding proton and anti-proton beams. The Fermilab systems have constituted a substantial advance in the techniques of cooling including: large pickup arrays operating at microwave frequencies, extensive use of cryogenic techniques to reduce thermal noise, super-conducting notch filters, and the development of tools for controlling and for accurately phasing the system.

The first is the time domain picture, in which the beam is rapidly sampled and a statistical analysis is used to describe the cooling behaviour. The second is the frequency domain picture, which is particularly useful since the observations made on the beam are mainly in this domain. This second picture is developed in detail to assess key components of modern cooling theory like mixing and signal shielding and to illustrate some of the diagnostic methods. Finally the use of a distribution function and the Fokker-Plank equation, which offer the most complete description of the beam during the cooling, are discussed.

The Recycler has two roles in Run II. First, to store antiprotons from the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator so that the antiproton production rate is no longer compromised by large numbers of antiprotons stored in the Accumulator. Second, to receive antiprotons from the Fermilab Tevatron at the end of luminosity periods. To perform each of these roles, stochastic cooling in the Recycler is needed to preserve and cool antiprotons in preparation for transfer to the Tevatron. The commissioning and performance of the Recycler stochastic cooling systems will be reviewed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improvement of antiproton stacking rates has been pursued for the last twenty years at Fermilab. The last twelve months have been dedicated to improving the computer model of the Stacktail system. The production of antiprotons encompasses the use of the entire accelerator chain with the exception of the Tevatron. In the Antiproton Source two storage rings, the Debuncher and Accumulator are responsible for the accumulation of antiprotons in quantities that can exceed 2 x 1012, but more routinely, stacks of 5 x 1011 antiprotons are accumulated before being transferred to the Recycler ring. Since the beginning of this recent enterprise, peak accumulation rates have increased from 2 x 1011 to greater than 2.3 x 1011 antiprotons per hour. A goal of 3 x 1011 per hour has been established. Improvements to the stochastic cooling systems are but a part of this current effort. This paper will discuss Stacktail system measurements and experienced system limitations.

This is the first time that linear-rf bunched-beam stochastic cooling has been successfully used operationally in a high-energy facility. In this implementation the particle bunch length is much greater than the cooling system wavelengths, and that property is critical to the cooling success. The simultaneous longitudinal bunching enables cooling to much smaller longitudinal emittances than the coasting beam or barrier bucket system. Characteristics and limitations of bunched beam stochastic cooling are discussed.

Book excerpt: Stochastic Cooling was invented by Simon van der Meer and was demonstrated at the CERN ISR and ICE (Initial Cooling Experiment). Operational systems were developed at Fermilab and CERN. A complete theory of cooling of unbunched beams was developed, and was applied at CERN and Fermilab. Several new and existing rings employ coasting beam cooling. Bunched beam cooling was demonstrated in ICE and has been observed in several rings designed for coasting beam cooling. High energy bunched beams have proven more difficult. Signal suppression was achieved in the Tevatron, though operational cooling was not pursued at Fermilab. Longitudinal cooling was achieved in the RHIC collider. More recently a vertical cooling system in RHIC cooled both transverse dimensions via betatron coupling.

Book excerpt: During the Fermilab Collider Run II, the Main Injector is expected to provided a three-fold increase in flux of the proton beam sent to the antiproton production target as compared to the previous Collider Run Ib. This increase in antiproton production rate to 20 x 101° antiprotons/hour will be handled by upgrading the stochastic cooling systems in both the Debuncher and Accumulator rings of the Fermilab Antiproton Source. In the Debuncher ring, the upgrade calls for increasing the stochastic cooling system bandwidth from 2-4 to 4-8 GHz. The effective front-end noise temperature of the cooling systems will also be lowered from 125K to 35K. This paper will discuss some details of the system design of the new 4-8 GHz cooling systems in the Debuncher Ring.

Book excerpt: It is generally accepted that longitudinal stochastic cooling of bunched beams is not possible without a synchrotron frequency spread. Experiments in the Recycler storage ring (Fermilab) demonstrate the opposite: with an antiproton bunch in a parabolic potential well (no synchrotron frequency spread), the cooling was almost as efficient as in a trapezoidal potential well (with a relative synchrotron frequency spread of (almost equal to) 100%). A possible explanation is that, at Recycler parameters, diffusion processes are sufficient to provide particle mixing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the continuous effort to improve antiproton stacking rate, a new type of equalizers has been developed and installed in antiproton accumulator. The R & D of these new equalizers is described in this paper. Equalizers are used in Fermilab antiproton stochastic cooling to compensate frequency response of the cooling system. Usually both amplitude and phase compensations are needed. However in most cases it is difficult to achieve a satisfactory compensation for both because of their interdependence. To make it more difficult is that in some cases large compensations (10 to 20 db of amplitude compensation or more than 100 degree of phase compensation) are needed near the low or high ends of a frequency band. Recently a new compensation scheme of equalizers is proposed for Fermilab antiproton accumulator. This scheme originated from the requirement to maximize the system performance resulting in a request for the phase of the cooling system transfer function to be extremely flat. For this kind of phase correction, a new type of equalizers has been developed.

Differences between the two cooling regimes are discussed. Criteria discussed in that paper imply the failure of stochastic cooling in the Tevatron while permitting the success of stochastic cooling in the Recycler. These ''predictions'' are in agreement with observations.

Book excerpt: Analysis of stochastic cooling systems is usually done under the assumption that the system performance is not limited by the available electronic gain. In practical systems, it may prove to be the case that cost-induced limitations on the maximum available output power restrict the maximum attainable gain, thereby restricting it to be less than its optimal value. Such is the case in the anti-proton sources at both CERN and Fermilab. The criteria that one would employ in, for example, upgrading such a power-limited system prove to be rather different from those for a system for which one can optimize the gain. In the following sections we first develop the formulas relevant to the behavior of power-limited cooling systems; we limit our treatment throughout to the case of systems which cool the transverse phase space of the beam. We then discuss the implications of our results for the upgrade of such cooling systems, contrasting this case with that for systems in which the electronic gain can be optimized. Finally, we apply our results to the specific case of the Fermilab debuncher ring. 3 refs., 1 fig., 2 tabs.

Book excerpt: Optical stochastic cooling (OSC) is a method of beam cooling which is expected to provide cooling rates orders of magnitude larger than ordinary stochastic cooling. Light from an undulator (the pickup) is amplified and fed back onto the particle beam via another undulator (the kicker). Fermilab is currently exploring a possible proof-of-principle experiment of the OSC at the integrable-optics test accelerator (IOTA) ring. To implement effective OSC a good correction of phase distortions in the entire band of the optical amplifier is required. In this contribution we present progress in experimental characterization of phase distortions associated to a Titanium Sapphire crystal laser-gain medium (a possible candidate gain medium for the OSC experiment to be performed at IOTA). We also discuss a possible option for a mid-IR amplifier.
