This book presents a structured collection of papers on the core topics, written at the close of the 6-year programme by the research groups who took part in it. The structure chosen highlights the interweaving of certain themes and certain interconnections discovered through the joint work. This yields a reference work on results and methods that will be useful to all who work between applied probability and the physical, economic, and life sciences.

Book Lectures on Probability Theory and Statistics

Download or read book Lectures on Probability Theory and Statistics written by Amir Dembo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-11-27 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains two of the three lectures that were given at the 33rd Probability Summer School in Saint-Flour (July 6-23, 2003). Amir Dembo’s course is devoted to recent studies of the fractal nature of random sets, focusing on some fine properties of the sample path of random walk and Brownian motion. In particular, the cover time for Markov chains, the dimension of discrete limsup random fractals, the multi-scale truncated second moment and the Ciesielski-Taylor identities are explored. Tadahisa Funaki’s course reviews recent developments of the mathematical theory on stochastic interface models, mostly on the so-called \nabla \varphi interface model. The results are formulated as classical limit theorems in probability theory, and the text serves with good applications of basic probability techniques.

Book Singular Random Dynamics

Download or read book Singular Random Dynamics written by Massimiliano Gubinelli and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by leading experts in an emerging field, this book offers a unique view of the theory of stochastic partial differential equations, with lectures on the stationary KPZ equation, fully nonlinear SPDEs, and random data wave equations. This subject has recently attracted a great deal of attention, partly as a consequence of Martin Hairer's contributions and in particular his creation of a theory of regularity structures for SPDEs, for which he was awarded the Fields Medal in 2014. The text comprises three lectures covering: the theory of stochastic Hamilton–Jacobi equations, one of the most intriguing and rich new chapters of this subject; singular SPDEs, which are at the cutting edge of innovation in the field following the breakthroughs of regularity structures and related theories, with the KPZ equation as a central example; and the study of dispersive equations with random initial conditions, which gives new insights into classical problems and at the same time provides a surprising parallel to the theory of singular SPDEs, viewed from many different perspectives. These notes are aimed at graduate students and researchers who want to familiarize themselves with this new field, which lies at the interface between analysis and probability.

Book Large Deviations

  • Author : S. R. S. Varadhan
  • Publisher : American Mathematical Soc.
  • Release : 2016-12-08
  • ISBN : 082184086X
  • Pages : 104 pages

Download or read book Large Deviations written by S. R. S. Varadhan and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of large deviations deals with rates at which probabilities of certain events decay as a natural parameter in the problem varies. This book, which is based on a graduate course on large deviations at the Courant Institute, focuses on three concrete sets of examples: (i) diffusions with small noise and the exit problem, (ii) large time behavior of Markov processes and their connection to the Feynman-Kac formula and the related large deviation behavior of the number of distinct sites visited by a random walk, and (iii) interacting particle systems, their scaling limits, and large deviations from their expected limits. For the most part the examples are worked out in detail, and in the process the subject of large deviations is developed. The book will give the reader a flavor of how large deviation theory can help in problems that are not posed directly in terms of large deviations. The reader is assumed to have some familiarity with probability, Markov processes, and interacting particle systems.

Book Statistical Mechanics of Classical and Disordered Systems

Download or read book Statistical Mechanics of Classical and Disordered Systems written by Véronique Gayrard and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-15 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings of the conference Advances in Statistical Mechanics, held in Marseille, France, August 2018, focus on fundamental issues of equilibrium and non-equilibrium dynamics for classical mechanical systems, as well as on open problems in statistical mechanics related to probability, mathematical physics, computer science, and biology. Statistical mechanics, as envisioned more than a century ago by Boltzmann, Maxwell and Gibbs, has recently undergone stunning twists and developments which have turned this old discipline into one of the most active areas of truly interdisciplinary and cutting-edge research. The contributions to this volume, with their rather unique blend of rigorous mathematics and applications, outline the state-of-the-art of this success story in key subject areas of equilibrium and non-equilibrium classical and quantum statistical mechanics of both disordered and non-disordered systems. Aimed at researchers in the broad field of applied modern probability theory, this book, and in particular the review articles, will also be of interest to graduate students looking for a gentle introduction to active topics of current research.

Book Analysis and Stochastics of Growth Processes and Interface Models

Download or read book Analysis and Stochastics of Growth Processes and Interface Models written by Peter Mörters and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-07-24 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of topical survey articles by leading researchers in the fields of applied analysis and probability theory, working on the mathematical description of growth phenomena. Particular emphasis is on the interplay of the two fields, with articles by analysts being accessible for researchers in probability, and vice versa. Mathematical methods discussed in the book comprise large deviation theory, lace expansion, harmonic multi-scale techniques and homogenisation of partial differential equations. Models based on the physics of individual particles are discussed alongside models based on the continuum description of large collections of particles, and the mathematical theories are used to describe physical phenomena such as droplet formation, Bose-Einstein condensation, Anderson localization, Ostwald ripening, or the formation of the early universe. The combination of articles from the two fields of analysis and probability is highly unusual and makes this book an important resource for researchers working in all areas close to the interface of these fields.
