Download or read book Vadose Zone Hydrology written by Marc B. Parlange and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999-08-05 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vadose zone is the region between ground level and the upper limits of soil fully saturated with water. Hydrology in the zone is complex: nonlinear physical, chemical, and biological interactions all affect the transfer of heat, mass, and momentum between the atmosphere and the water table. This book takes an interdisciplinary approach to vadose zone hydrology, bringing together insights from soil science, hydrology, biology, chemistry, physics, and instrumentation design. The chapters present state-of-the-art research, focusing on new frontiers in theory, experiment, and management of soils. The collection addresses the full range of processes, from the pore-scale to field and landscape scales.

Book Stochastic Analysis of Flow and Transport in Porous Media

Download or read book Stochastic Analysis of Flow and Transport in Porous Media written by Veronika S. Vasylkivska and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Random fields are frequently used in computational simulations of real-life processes. In particular, in this work they are used in modeling of flow and transport in porous media. Porous media as they arise in geological formations are intrinsically deterministic but there is significant uncertainty involved in determination of their properties such as permeability, porosity and diffusivity. In many situations description of properties of the porous media is aided by a limited number of observations at fixed points. These observations constrain the randomness of the field and lead to conditional simulations. In this work we propose a method of simulating the random fields which respect the observed data. An advantage of our method is that in the case that additional data becomes available it can be easily incorporated into subsequent representations. The proposed method is based on infinite series representations of random fields. We provide truncation error estimates which bound the discrepancy between the truncated series and the random field. We additionally provide the expansions for some processes that have not yet appeared in the literature. There are several approaches to efficient numerical computations for partial differential equations with random parameters. In this work we compare the solutions of flow and transport equations obtained by conditional simulations with Monte Carlo (MC) and stochastic collocation (SC) methods. Due to its simplicity MC method is one of the most popular methods used for the solution of stochastic equations. However, it is computationally expensive. The SC method is functionally similar to the MC method but it provides the faster convergence of the statistical moments of the solutions through the use of the carefully chosen collocation points at which the flow and transport equations are solved. We show that for both methods the conditioning on measurements helps to reduce the uncertainty of the solutions of the flow and transport equations. This especially holds in the neighborhood of the conditioning points. Conditioning reduces the variances of solutions helping to quantify the uncertainty in the output of the flow and transport equations.

Book Conceptual Models of Flow and Transport in the Fractured Vadose Zone

Download or read book Conceptual Models of Flow and Transport in the Fractured Vadose Zone written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-05-21 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid flow and solute transport within the vadose zone, the unsaturated zone between the land surface and the water table, can be the cause of expanded plumes arising from localized contaminant sources. An understanding of vadose zone processes is, therefore, an essential prerequisite for cost-effective contaminant remediation efforts. In addition, because such features are potential avenues for rapid transport of chemicals from contamination sources to the water table, the presence of fractures and other channel-like openings in the vadose zone poses a particularly significant problem, Conceptual Models of Flow and Transport in the Fractured Vadose Zone is based on the work of a panel established under the auspices of the U.S. National Committee for Rock Mechanics. It emphasizes the importance of conceptual models and goes on to review the conceptual model development, testing, and refinement processes. The book examines fluid flow and transport mechanisms, noting the difficulty of modeling solute transport, and identifies geochemical and environmental tracer data as important components of the modeling process. Finally, the book recommends several areas for continued research.

Book Advances in Groundwater Pollution Control and Remediation

Download or read book Advances in Groundwater Pollution Control and Remediation written by Mustafa Aral ARAL and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decades, environmental scientists, economists and physicists have been juggling critical issues within environmental strategies and environmental management styles in order to find a feasible medium between limited resources, long term demands and objectives, and interest groups. In the search for best management alternatives, practice has undergone a pendulum swing between stages that can be characterised as frontier economics, radical environmentalism, resource management/allocation, selective environmentalism and sustainable environmental management. The next stage of management must answer such questions as: `Can there be a global - uniform environmental strategy?', or `Based on their characteristics, can different issues, different regions and different applications have unique environmental strategies?' Based on this premise, the next stage of management may be identified as risk based sustainable environmental management. The goal of this style will be the risk based, long term, harmonious management of economic resources and environmental preservation for health, safety and prosperity of sustainable populations. When evaluation of risk or risk based ranking of management alternatives enter the picture as part of the overall puzzle, then social policy, ethics and health issues assume a very important role in the management strategy. Economic incentives and environmental constraints have to be considered harmoniously, the main emphasis being placed on protection and preservation of human health and the long term sustaining of populations.

The first part covers ground assessment, contamination, geo-statistics, remote sensing, GIS, risk assessment and management, and environmental impact assessment. The second part covers atmospheric assessment topics, including the dynamics of contaminant transport, impacts of global warming, indoor and outdoor techniques and practice. The third part is dedicated to the hydrosphere including both the marine and fresh water environments. Finally, part four examines emerging issues in pollution assessment, from nanomaterials to artificial intelligence. There are a wide variety of case studies in the book to help bridge the gap between concept and practice. Environmental Engineers will benefit from the integrated approach to pollution assessment across multiple spheres. Practicing engineers and students will also benefit from the case studies, which bring the practice side by side with fundamental concepts. - Provides a comprehensive overview of pollution assessment - Covers land, underground, water and air pollution - Includes outdoor and indoor pollution assessment - Presents case studies that help bridge the gap between concepts and practice

Book Water Flow and Solute Transport in Soils

Download or read book Water Flow and Solute Transport in Soils written by David Russo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A year has passed since Eshel Bresler, my good friend and colleague, and a member of the editorial board of the Advanced Series in Agricultural Sciences, died suddenly while on a visit to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. We had worked together for almost 30 years at the Institute of Soils and Water, ARO, The Volcani Center at Bet Dagan. At the very beginning of our scientific careers we cooperated directly and as a result one of our first publications was coauthored (Soil Sci. 101:205-209, 1966). Thereafter, our specific research interests diver sified, but we continued to work together, with similar approaches to research, and to strive towards the development of Israel soil science and its integration into general worldwide scientific progress. I don't need to emphasize Eshel's contribution to the understan ding of the processes governing water flow and solute transport pro cesses in soils and unsaturated zones. The contributions to this Volume by such a body of outstanding scientists shows the apprecia tion of the international scientific community to his research achievements.
