Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Carla Shuford was dealt a major blow when she lost her left leg at the age of fifteen, she didn't say "pity me", or "I can't do it." Instead, she carried on with determination and the love and support of her parents, hard-working farmers who lived in the mountains of North Carolina. Carla's stories and poems, and the various materials included here will tell you of her life, her interests, and her passions. "I have just finished Carla's bio. What a memorable, enlightening book! Many stories by Carla and her poetry. Carla has always been a shining star, but now that star is brighter than ever. You will all love it!"Suellen Kaltenhacher, Hannah Moore Academy, Class of 1960, to her fellow classmates."Rita Berman captures Carla perfectly: in her stories, her ever ready and sometimes wicked wit, her travels and travails, her origins and the difference they've made in what and who she cares for and about, and living fully with a disability that would have leveled the most stalwart. Berman's biography, like Carla, evokes laughter, tears, amazement and a fuller heart." Lynn Knauff, NC."Still Hopping, Still Hoping is a delight. I did not know Carla was so distinguished. Rita Berman has done a superb job with this biography." Larry Cramer, Chapel Hill, NC

Book Jumping

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jane Peranteau
  • Publisher : Hampton Roads Publishing
  • Release : 2014-11-01
  • ISBN : 1612833349
  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book Jumping written by Jane Peranteau and published by Hampton Roads Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jumping is a work of visionary fiction that begins with a nihilistic act. The main character, a young man, feels life’s limits are killing him, drives to a remote area, walks 100 yards, and leaps into a dark and mysterious chasm, known locally as the “Void.” Friends and family are stunned. What he meets in the Void is his own larger spiritual history—a cohort of souls he incarnated with, a string of past lives he visits—and he’s changed profoundly and permanently. Because of his story, others jump. What are they jumping to? Duncan Robert is the first to jump. No one saw him do it, but some claim they felt something at the moment he jumped—a sort of missed beat, or skip, in the order of things. The Void waits in the woods just outside of town and has for as long as anyone can remember, though no one knows why. In the tradition of The Celestine Prophecy and Mutant Message Down Under, this teaching fable explores the necessity of taking risks, life beyond the limits and time and space, and humanity’s place in the universe. "In a way, Jumping is similar to spiritually directed fantasy or channeled work. I’ve never written anything like it and typically don’t read anything like it, so I’m short on language to describe it. It’s metaphysical and fiction, which removes it from the category of straight channeling or metaphysical self-help books." —Jane Peranteau

"Where was that?" "Here at the church . . ." Maria felt her face burning with shame. She had fallen into disgrace, but not far enough to endure the term "pathetic." * * * "Did you come to the Ladies' Aid Meeting?" the woman asked. "Yeah. I came for aid," Maria answered, trying to control the bitterness in her voice. "I came for aid yesterday, but you asked me to eat and I did. I came again today to see if you needed a janitor to clean the church, but I know you don't, so I'll leave." * * * Maria Grant feels she at her wit's end-hungry, weary, and bedraggled-all for the love of a boy. Why did she leave her loving family to be near Orville? He didn't care one iota for her. She had sunk so low, all because of Orville.

Book Jumping the Line

Download or read book Jumping the Line written by William Herrick and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1998-05-15 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An eye-opening account of time served in the great battles of our century— for workers’ rights, against Fascism, Communism, and racism—Jumping the Line is the life story of an American original. William Herrick chronicles his adventures and misadventures on the front lines of the Spanish Civil War, in (and very much out of) the Communist Party, driving a tractor on a communal farm in Michigan, jumping the line as a hobo, organizing African American sharecroppers in Georgia, at work with Orson Welles, and immersed in his own writing. Herrick chronicles a life of great conviction and great disillusion. He went to Spain in 1936 to fight against the Fascists and there witnessed the horrifying acts that Fascists and Communists alike committed, before he was felled by a near-fatal wound. Here he tells about the life that led him, a working-class Jewish kid from New York, into the idealism and then the murky politics of this internecine conflict. From the bloody fight in Spain he takes us to the battlefields of the Communist movement in the U.S., where he found himself parading up and down the garment district of Manhattan, denouncing his former comrades. When Paul Berman interviewed Herrick in the Village Voice in 1986, for the fiftieth anniversary of the Spanish Civil War, Herrick’s remarks so incensed other veterans of the Abraham Lincoln battalion that they picketed the paper. What William Herrick has to say doesn’t always go down easily. But for those who like the truth, with a dash of wit and a healthy dose of history, it can be exhilarating.
