Book excerpt: The volcanic crag that dominates Stirling was probably fortified from ancient times, but the importance of Stirling Castle as a royal residence peaked in the 16th century. Around 1500, James IV added new buildings including the vast Great Hall. The elegant Chapel Royal was built by James VI in 1594. But the heart of Stirling Castle is the spectacular Palace, commissioned by James V in the 1530s. Its exuberant design drew on the fashions of the European Renaissance to express James's power and sophistication. Following a major programme of research, Historic Scotland has re-presented the Palace interiors as they might have looked when James V's grand scheme was completed. This book also includes a guide to Argyll's Lodging and Mar's Wark, grand residences occupied by major nobles near castle.

Related to Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of England, they descend from the Merovingians Kings of Normandy, Welsh Kings, William The Conqueror, Robert de Bruce of Scotland and the Sea-Kings of Norway. A compilation of everything that has been done by other members of the family, there is still a lot of research to be done, and lots to learn about individuals in this amazing genealogy. Download or read book Stirling Bridge and Falkirk 1297 98 written by Peter Armstrong and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09-20 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A slim, illustrated volume on the two key battles of William Wallace, the legendary Scottish rebel. The death of the last of the Scottish royal house of Canmore in 1290 triggered a succession crisis. Attempts to undermine Scottish independence by King Edward I of England sparked open rebellion culminating in an English defeat at the hands of William Wallace at Stirling Bridge in 1297. Edward gathered an army, marched north and at Falkirk on 22 July 1298 he brought Wallace's army to battle. Amid accusations of treachery, Wallace's spearmen were slaughtered by Edward's longbowmen, then charged by the English cavalry and almost annihilated. Complete with illustrations, including bird's eye view maps of each battle, Peter Armstrong details the events up until Wallace was captured and executed in 1305, and demonstrates that the flame of rebellion he had ignited could not be extinguished.
Download or read book Haunted Stirling written by David Kinnaird and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2010-11-08 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From heart-stopping accounts of apparitions, poltergeists and related supernatural phenomena, to first-hand encounters with phantoms and spirits, this collection of stories contains both new and well-known spooky tales from around Stirling. A whole chapter is dedicated to the mysterious goings-on at Stirling Castle, where cleaners in the King's Old Building claimed to have heard footsteps coming from the third floor — which hasn't existed since a fire in the nineteenth-century; while a 1930s photograph purports to capture the shadow of a phantom guardsman — possibly the same 'Highland Soldier' often reportedly mistaken by tourists for a castle guide. The town itself has no shortage of fascinating tales, including the story of the Old Town's most famous phantom, seventeenth-century merchant John 'Auld Staney Breeks' Cowane, whose spirit is said to inhabit his statue each Hogmanay. A playful ghost supposedly throws pots and pans around the kitchens of the Darnley Coffee House, while frequent power failures and mishaps in the Tolbooth Theatre — originally the eighteenth-century Burgh jail — are blamed upon the malicious spirit of the last man hanged, Alan Mair. Drawing on historical and contemporary sources, Haunted Stirling is guaranteed to intrigue and chill both believers and sceptics alike.
