However, by the middle of the decade, a fair degree of currency stability had been restored as a result of the formation of currency areas or blocs. One of the most important was that of the sterling bloc which, though very informal in structure, made a significant contribution to stabilising the exchanges. Its role in the process is analyzed in this paper.
