The British naval giant Admiral Lord Nelson recognized that Stephen Decatur had accomplished the impossible, and named the sinking of the USS Philadelphia the most bold and daring act of the age. Captain Stephen Decatur captured the HMS Macedonia as only the second Royal Navy vessel of the war of 1812 to surrender to Americans. More unique was the Macedonian was the only British ship that was defeated and captured to be refitted and commissioned in the American Navy during the war. She was commissioned as the USS Macedonian. The Americans had proven they could defeat England at sea with superior seamanship and gunnery.
