Book Rio de Janeiro in the Global Meat Market c 1850 to c 1930

Download or read book Rio de Janeiro in the Global Meat Market c 1850 to c 1930 written by Maria-Aparecida Lopes and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-07-19 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the meat provision system of Rio de Janeiro from the 1850s to the 1930s. Until the 1920s, Rio was Brazil’s economic hub, main industrial city, and prime consumer market. Meat consumption was an indicator of living standards and a matter of public concern. The work unveils that in the second half of the nineteenth century, the city was well supplied with red meat. Initially, dwellers relied mostly on salted meat; then, in the latter decades of the 1800s, two sets of changes upgraded fresh meat deliveries. First, ranching expansion and transportation innovation in southeast and central-west Brazil guaranteed a continuous flow of cattle to Rio. Second, the municipal centralization of meat processing and distribution made its provision regular and predictable. By the early twentieth century, fresh meat replaced salted meat in the urban marketplace. This study examines these developments in light of national and global developments in the livestock and meat industries.

Book Travel Junkie

Download or read book Travel Junkie written by Jack Harms and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not a travel guide, nor is it a typical travel book. This is a story about a man who overcame personal tragedies to achieve his lifetime ambition to explore the world. You won't find stories of a man who climbed mountains or sailed the seas. Instead you'll hear about one man's journey who visited over 100 well-known foreign countries and cities, swam with the sharks in Bora-Bora, Tahiti and in Grand Cayman, explored the underwater world of the Australian Great Barrier Reef, walked the Great Wall of China; and went on photo safaris in the African wild game parks. When he began his traveling adventures, the last thing on his mind was writing a book. As he progressed through his trips, he would entertain his relatives, friends and clients with the stories and photos of his more important memories. Invariably, they would say "you ought to write a book!" And so he did, and here it is. The book should assist the beginning traveler in deciding where to go, how to go, and how long to stay, and last but not least, how to stay safe in a sometimes dangerous world. Traveling can be, and often is, very rewarding. But it can also be frustrating, expensive, and dangerous. When traveling to a foreign country it is best to expect the unexpected, as your experience will be unlike anything you've experienced before. The Travel Junkie also reveals the true character of Jack Harms and his personal life. Including his hitchhiking days, his attraction to famous entertainers' live performances, his traumatic experiences - being on his own at the age of fourteen in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and the deaths of his mother, and only two brothers at very young ages.

Download or read book Brazil written by Malcolm Slesser and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-09 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1969 Brazil: Land Without Limits offers its readers the full flavour of this enchanting land that is Brazil. Malcolm Slesser travelled through Brazil during a year as a lecturer at the University of Rio de Janeiro and brings his sympathetic understanding and sense of humor to describe Brazil to its readers. Brazil is a land of contrasts, of the ancient and the modern, the rich and the poor. From the dense tropical jungles of the Matto Grosso to Brasilia, the modern capital, and the beach of Copacabana, enjoyed by all races and colours, the scene is everchanging. To a European like Malcolm Slesser the country offers an enormous challenge. It exasperates, frustrates, enchants, and captivates. But Brazil is much more than an exotic tourist attraction. Its abundant natural resources make it a country to be reckoned with on a world scale. Author argues that it is ready to exploit its potential, to make it a country of limitless potential as limitless as the land itself. This fascinating account of Brazil will be interesting for general readers and for students of Latin American studies.

Book Refugia

  • ISBN : 0429892543
  • Pages : 120 pages

Download or read book Refugia written by Robin Cohen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an unusual book. Combining social science fiction, utopianism, pragmatism, sober analysis and innovative social theory, the authors address one of the biggest dilemmas of our age – how to solve the problems arising from mass displacement. As early versions of the solution proposed by Robin Cohen and Nicholas Van Hear filtered out, their vision of a new, networked, transnational archipelago, called Refugia, was immediately denounced or met with scepticism by established refugee scholars. Others were more intrigued, more open-minded, or perhaps just holding their fire until this book was finally published. As it at least has the virtue of originality, why not judge the proposal for yourself? Read it and craft your own critique. The authors have initiated an openly pro-refugee vision that all can help to shape. Written in a clear and direct style, this book will appeal to scholars, students, practitioners and an informed public ready to engage with this pressing issue.

Book Aventura Alaska Brasil

Download or read book Aventura Alaska Brasil written by William Carroll and published by Coda Publications. This book was released on 2003-03 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill and Renee Carroll's "Aventura Alaska Brasil" proved to be a lifetime's journey of pleasure, disappointment and achievement. For an unprecedented 24/7 durability test, their car's engine was started in Anchorage, Alaska and ran almost continuously for 125 days and nights. At the same time they drove the brand-new Mercury coupe 24,876 miles south to Brazil's Rio de Janeiro. A highlight was transiting the Panama Canal and three days of cruising the Caribbean Sea because there was no other way to travel from Panama to South America. Overnights ranged from tiny hostels welcoming every traveler with old-world courtesy to magnificent chain edifices that routinely failed to know of verified room reservations. The variety of food included chocolate-coated ants in Columbia and gourmet dinners in Venezuela. Gasoline was usually available except when a town had none, or the only pump was on the far side of a barbed wire fence. Multi-lane pavement soon became a desired treat, cobblestones rustic backbreakers, landslides in Costa Rica a dangerous hurdle and road rocks in Ecuador ripped a hole in the gasoline tank. Later, between Chile and Argentina, their route involved following rails and bouncing over ties through a railroad's "Tunel Internacional" deep in the Andes. Press conferences arranged by "Aventura" sponsors Ford Motor Company, Morton International, STP and Firestone Tire and Rubber were great fun. Most difficult was entering Brasil, where a senior Customs Inspector thought the Mercury's documents were forged, and restrained the Carrolls in his tiny border town for days. All, and more, is part of this exciting "Aventura Alaska Brasil."
