Book excerpt: GET READY TO FALL IN LOVE WITH ONE INCREDIBLE DOG ... Marika Meeks fell in love with Stella the moment she saw her. The adorable pit bull puppy had been abandoned in a cold field in winter—but her warm, friendly eyes and boundless affection could melt anyone’s heart. Even so, Marika wasn’t sure she was ready to adopt a dog. As a busy entrepreneur, wife, and mother of two daughters, Marika’s life was crazy already. She was recovering from stage-three breast cancer, and her family was still reeling from her brush with mortality. But Marika couldn’t deny the way Stella made her feel—the pure joy of this sweet-natured dog’s unconditional love—and she knew in her heart what her family needed ... In a leap of faith, the Meekses welcomed Stella into their home, and thanks to this incredible dog, the daily pressures of work, stress, and Marika’s health problems seemed to slip away. As Marika’s cancer receded and her family found renewed vitality, she began sharing Stella’s story with the world. Now an international social media star, Stella helps Marika to spread their heartfelt message of advocating for pit bull breed awareness, explaining the benefits of pet ownership, and supporting shelters and other organizations that save animals’ lives. If you’ve ever experienced the joy that only an animal can bring—or felt the healing power of a pet’s unconditional love—you’re going to adore Incredibull Stella.

Book excerpt: "At age twenty-eight, Mira Ptacin discovered she was pregnant. Though it was unplanned, she soon embraced the pregnancy and became engaged to Andrew, the father. Five months later, an ultrasound revealed birth defects that would give the child no chance of survival outside the womb. Mira was given three options: terminate her pregnancy, induce early delivery, or wait and inevitably miscarry. Mira's story is woven together with the story of her mother, who emigrated from Poland, also at the age of twenty-eight, and adopted a son, Julian. Julian would die tragically, bringing her an unimaginable grief. A memoir about loss and self-preservation, grief and recovery, and mothers and daughters, [this book] is [an] ... examination of free will, love, and the fierce bonds of family"--

Book Music on Stage

    Book Details:
  • Author : Fiona Jane Schopf
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2015-09-18
  • ISBN : 1443883107
  • Pages : 275 pages

Download or read book Music on Stage written by Fiona Jane Schopf and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music on Stage presents papers from the interdisciplinary “Music on Stage” conference series held biennially at Rose Bruford College, Sidcup, Kent, since 2006. Three main streams of music theatre are covered in each conference: opera, the Musical, and performance practice. The collection of papers here on opera covers a wide spectrum of operatic debate from historic (contextualising Wagner and Rimsky-Korsakov) to contemporary opera; the current debate about Werktreue and Regieoper; investigation into the genesis of one of opera’s most iconic characters, Wagner’s Wotan; exploring Nono’s Prometheo, Maher’s The Hunchback Variations Opera and Jennifer Walshe’s music theatre pieces; and also interrogating the use of animal characters on stage and their perceived threat to the human voice. Papers on the Musical explore Reich’s The Cave, Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George, the musical synthesis between Spanish Copla music and the Anglo-American “book” musical, and one stage not often considered in its own right when discussing music theatre—television—a domestic stage which is immediately available to all. Rose Bruford leads the world in actor-musician training, and the papers here further explore and debate this aspect of performance and its impact on stage by interrogating the whole gestalt of music and text, as well as the process of actor-musician training. Basarab Nicolescu’s transdisciplinarity idea of embracing and unifying multiple performance disciplines within the singer’s training concludes this selection of papers.

Howard Kissel, chief theater critic for the New York Daily News, extends the reach of Engel's subjects by bringing them up to date with commentary on such shows as A Chorus Line, Nine, Sunday in the Park with George, Rent, Working and Falsettos.
