Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is the first comprehensive study of funerary stelae exhibiting mixed iconography from Upper Egypt during the Roman period in Egypt. The first chapter is devoted primarily to the recovery of the records of the unpublished excavations of John Garstang at Abydos in 1907. This cemetery is the most extensive and most productive that is known in Upper Egypt. The published accounts of the excavations at Coptos and Dendereh are assessed. There follows a catalogue of 256 stelae by site, including 144 stelae excavated by Garstang which, with few exceptions, have remained unpublished. The catalogue is complemented by discussions of the iconography, style, workmanship, inscriptions and dating of the stelae. The funerary beliefs and customs reflected in the reliefs and texts are set within the general context of the Roman period in Egypt. A concordance of the Garstang stelae with their excavation numbers is included, as well as a list of the stelae categorized by type of scene. A distribution list of the Graeco-Roman stelae from Garstang's excavations at Abydos and from Petrie's excavations at Dendereh is also provided.

In 1925 a joint expedition from the University of Pennsylvania Museum and the British Museum discovered dozens of fragments of a monument in honor of Ur-Nammu. Because such works have rarely survived, the stela became one of the most famous examples of Near Eastern art, a status it retains today. The stela had been ten feet high with registers in relief of scenes of religious practices on both front and back. By 1927 the best pieces had been restored in Philadelphia into an imagined version of the stela, with plaster filling the gaps. But more than twice as many small or worn pieces were omitted from the restoration and dutifully stored in boxes at the Museum. Jeanny Vorys Canby realized that the early reconstruction had been too hasty, and her meticulous, painstaking reexamination reveals a wealth of new scenes that revise our understanding of the monument. This book includes the justification of the reconstructions, description of the scenes, speculation on the ancient fate of the stela, as well as a description of each piece with photograph and drawing. These vigorous, innovative scenes contradict the long-held view from the old reconstruction that the monument was dull and repetitive. In fact, it is fresh and vibrant, with dynamic scenes peopled by beautifully sculpted actors. Entirely new evidence is presented here in scientific detail, including appendices from Steven Tinney, of the Museum's Babylonian Section, and Tamsen Fuller, conservationist. The kings' portraits are carved in relief on the main surfaces of the stones, deifying them as incarnations of the mythical trees of life. Based on a thorough analysis of the imagery and inscriptions of seven stelae erected in the Great Plaza at Copan, Honduras, by the Classic Period ruler "18-Rabbit-God K," this ambitious study argues that stelae were erected not only to support a ruler's temporal claims to power but more importantly to express the fundamental connection in Maya worldview between rulership and the cosmology inherent in their vision of cyclical time. After an overview of the archaeology and history of Copan and the reign and monuments of "18-Rabbit-God K," Elizabeth Newsome interprets the iconography and inscriptions on the stelae, illustrating the way they fulfilled a coordinated vision of the king's ceremonial role in Copan's period-ending rites. She also links their imagery to key Maya concepts about the origin of the universe, expressed in the cosmologies and mythic lore of ancient and living Maya peoples.

Book excerpt: This catalogue discusses aspects of Carthaginian or 'Punic' culture as shown by the inscribed and carved stones, or stelae, in the British Museum's collections. These stelae were acquired during the 19th century in North Africa, and come mainly from Tunisia. The majority of the stelae have votive or dedicatory inscriptions in Punic and some of them are thought to come from tophets , burial precincts that are characteristic of Phoenician settlements in the west Mediterranean. The stelae provide a window on the religion and language of the Carthaginians, both of which are still imperfectly understood. They date from between the 4th century BC to the 4th century AD, and in the catalogue they are divided into Punic and Neo-Punic, according to whether they pre- or post-date the Roman sack of Carthage in 146 BC. The Catalogue describes each stela, giving transcriptions and translations of the Punic and neo-Punic inscriptions, plus measurements and bibliographical references. Every stela is photographically illustrated to facilitate reading the inscriptions.
