Book Understanding Steel Design

Download or read book Understanding Steel Design written by Terri Meyer Boake and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-03-04 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Steel Design is based on an overall approach to understand how to design and build with steel from the perspective of its architectural applications. Steel is a material whose qualities have enormous potential for the creation of dynamic architecture. In an innovative approach to the reality of working with steel, the book takes a new look both at the state of tried-and-tested techniques and at emerging projects. Hundreds of steel structures have been observed, analyzed and appraised for this book. In-depth construction photographs by the author are complemented by technical illustrations created to look more closely at systems and details. Drawings supplied by fabricators allow greater insight into a method of working with current digital drawing tools.

Book Development of Innovative Steel glass Structures in Respect to Structural and Architectural Design Innoglast

Download or read book Development of Innovative Steel glass Structures in Respect to Structural and Architectural Design Innoglast written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Innoglast project addresses the development of new and innovative steel-glasstructures. Hybrid steel-glass beams, comprising of steel flanges and a glass web, and steel-supported glazing facade systems for buildings were considered. The solutions proposed are based on utilising adhesive connections to obtain the optimal structural interaction between steel and glass. For hybrid steel-glass beams, analytical design procedures have been developed which are verified by experimental and numerical studies. These design procedures have been simplified, presenting accurate analytical calculations which can be used in engineering practices. These analytical tools enable safe and economical designs to be prepared when estimating the bearing behaviour of hybrid steel-glass structures with semi-rigid shear connections, bonded together by polymer adhesives. For steel-supported glazing facade structures, an analytical model has been developed. This model enables the inherent in-plane stiffness of steelsupported glass facade panels to be calculated, and to be used in providing vertical bracing to multi-storey buildings. The model, which is based on results obtained from physical tests and finite element modelling, enables the horizontal forces acting on the building from wind loading and sway effects to be apportioned between the glazing facade and the steel vertical bracing, thereby potentially reducing the size of steel bracing members that form part of the overall building frame. This report summarises theoretical investigations, background testing and numerical modelling that have been performed and presents design guidance which can be used for the design of hybrid glass beams and steel-supported glass facades.

Book Glass Structures

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jan Wurm
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN : 3764376082
  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book Glass Structures written by Jan Wurm and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flat glass opens up more possibilities for the planner than virtually any other material. Because of the technological complexity of using it, however, no specific structural forms have been developed for glass supporting frameworks as they have been for wood, concrete, and steel. This book is thus the first to present a coherent guide to the planning and design of glass supporting frameworks. The focus is on the pressure-resistant, flat supporting element as a basic building block for broad supporting structures. The spatial and constructive forms of multifunctional, self-supporting glass envelopes are vividly illustrated and systematically explained. The constructions presented exhibit new aesthetic qualities, based not on the dictum of "dematerialization" but on the poetry of gleaming and transparent planes. They ring in a new chapter in the history of glass architecture.

Book excerpt: Façade design is a challenging task, in which multidisciplinary issues and aspects should be optimally considered and addressed. This is especially the case of building façades exposed to seismic events, impacts, or fire. Special attention and major efforts are required for the detection and application of new technologies in the generation of modern, adaptive façade systems. This book presents a selection of research contributions to provide a comprehensive overview of façade design. It discusses the experimental analysis and numerical investigation of existing or traditional façades, as well as the development and optimal application of new technologies for modern adaptive façades and building envelopes.

Book Challenging Glass 3

Download or read book Challenging Glass 3 written by Freek Bos and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 1022 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two things everybody knows about glass: it is transparent, and it breaks! These are also the properties that constitute the challenge of glass as an architectural and structural material. This book presents papers from the third Challenging Glass Conference (CGC3), held at the Technical University (TU) Delft, the Netherlands, in June 2012. The conference brings together glass engineering, research and design specialists. Papers are grouped under seven topic headings: project and case studies; joints, fixings and adhesives; strength, stability and safety (a category which includes a quarter of all the papers presented at the conference); laminates and composite design; curved and bended glass; architectural design and lighting and finally, glass in facades. Glass remains one of the most exciting materials available to designers and architects today. This book will be of interest to all those involved in working with glass in an architectural and structural context.
