Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for alternate energy sources has led to the develop ment of prototype fusion and MHD reactors. Both possible energy systems in current designs usually require the use of magnetic fields for plasma confinement and concentration. For the creation and maintenance of large 5 to 15 tesla magnetic fields, supercon ducting magnets appear more economical. But the high magnetic fields create large forces, and the complexities of the conceptual reactors create severe space restrictions. The combination of re quirements, plus the desire to keep construction costs at a mini mum, has created a need for stronger structural alloys for service at liquid helium temperature (4 K). The complexity of the required structures requires that these alloys be weldable. Furthermore, since the plasma is influenced by magnetic fields and since magnet ic forces from the use of ferromagnetic materials in many configur ations may be additive, the best structural alloy for most applica tions should be nonmagnetic. These requirements have led to consideration of higher strength austenitic steels. Strength increases at low temperatures are achieved by the addition of nitrogen. The stability of the austenitic structure is retained by adding manganese instead of nickel, which is more expensive. Research to develop these higher strength austenitic steels is in process, primarily in Japan and the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1985 joint Cryogenic Engineering/International Cryogenic Materi als Conference was held on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts. About 350 papers were presented at the joint conference on a wide variety of topics in cryogenic science and engineering. This volume of Advances in cryogenic Eogineerlng, the thirty-first in the series which began in 1954, contains most of the papers which were presented at the 1985 Cryogenic Engineering Conference. Each paper was rigorously peer reviewed to maintain the international reputation of Advances as the premier archival publication in the field of cryoscience, engineering, and technology. All the papers published in Volume 31 contain an abstract. A copy of the book will be sent to all maj or abstracting services, which should improve retrieval of the information contained in the published papers. I would like to thank the authors and those who served as reviewers. I especially appreciate the assistance of my colleague M. E. Stone who edited some of the papers for this volume. Terry Gutierrez was invaluable in preparing the manuscripts for publication, and I thank her. xvii DEDICATION Dr. Samuel C. Collins, Professor Emeritus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, internationally known as the father of practical helium liquefiers and founder of the MIT Cryogenic Engineering Laboratory, died on June 19, 1984, in George Washington University Hospital, Washington, DC.

This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is intended to provide users a ready reference for the chemical composition of a variety of Soviet alloys and primary metals. This handbook does not contain all Soviet alloy designators for several reasons. First, the Soviets are not always consistent in the designation of their alloys; that is, at times, different alloy designators will represent the same chemical composition, while a single alloy designator will be used to label several different alloy chemical compositions. Second, often a minor change in the composition of an alloy will cause the creation of a new designator, even though the alloy is not substantially changed (this is particularly true in the case of ferrous alloys). This creates the possibility of nearly a infinite number of alloys and thus alloy designators. Third, since the major source of Soviet alloy designators and compositions are articles from Soviet professional journals, reporting error, translation error, and nonstandard use of alloy designators by Soviet authors have compounded the ambiguity inherent in the Soviet system of alloy designation. Moreover, Soviet authors may employ alloy designators which are not official, and thus only appear once in the literature. And finally, during review of Soviet literature some alloy designators are missed. Consequently, with the needs of the user in mind, the author has attempted to limit the alloy designators listed to those that are the most used or technically significant, without eliminating all of the more obscure designations or sacrificing completeness. In sum, not all the alloy designators used by Soviets are listed, but the vast majority of the alloy systems or families are.
