Written with style, wit, and rhythm, Personal Space Camp addresses the complex issue of respect for another person's physical boundaries. Told from Louis' perspective, this story is a must have resource for parents, teachers, and counselors who want to communicate the idea of personal space in a manner that connects with kids.

Book Stealing MySpace

Download or read book Stealing MySpace written by Julia Angwin and published by Random House. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A few years ago, MySpace.com was just an idea kicking around a Southern California spam mill. Scroll down to the present day and MySpace is one of the most visited Internet destinations in America, displaying more than 40 billion webpage views per month and generating nearly $1 billion annually for Rupert Murdoch’s online empire. Even by the standards of the Internet age, the MySpace saga is an astounding growth story, which climaxed with the site’s acquisition by Murdoch’s News Corporation in 2005 for a sum approaching one billion dollars. But more than that, it may be the defining drama of the digital era. In Stealing MySpace, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Julia Angwin chronicles the rise of this Internet powerhouse. With an unerring eye, Angwin details how MySpace took the Internet by storm by grabbing the best ideas from around the Web, encouraging pinup stars such as Tila Tequila to make their home on its pages and giving everyone freedom to experiment with online identities–including using somebody else’s identity. Stealing MySpace introduces us to the site’s founders, Chris DeWolfe and Tom Anderson, who dabbled in computer hacking, online pornography, spam, and spyware before starting MySpace. Although their street savvy, doggedness, and clubbing skills far eclipsed their tech prowess, they stumbled their way to success and soon found themselves at ground zero of a high-stakes war that pitted Rupert Murdoch against his frequent nemesis, the combative Viacom CEO Sumner Redstone. Angwin sheds light on the dizzying backroom deals that allowed Murdoch to snatch MySpace from Viacom’s grasp even as the MySpace founders remained in the dark about their own fate. Then she takes us inside the Murdoch empire as DeWolfe and Anderson lobby furiously to regain control of their creation. Venturing beyond the business aspects of the story, Angwin also explores the Internet culture, a voyeuristic world in which MySpace must stay one step ahead of amateur pornographers, sexual predators, and “spoofers” who set up fake profiles (Rupert Murdoch himself tolerates dozens of phony “Ruperts” on the site) and cope with the general excesses and sometimes illegal acts of a community of account holders equal in number to the population of Japan. In Stealing MySpace, Julia Angwin dishes on the epic real-world battle for control of a virtual empire. In a savvy, smart, fast-paced narrative reminiscent of Bryan Burrough and John Helyar’s Barbarians at the Gate and Michael Lewis’s The New New Thing, Stealing MySpace tells is the whole gripping story behind a breakout cultural phenomenon.

According to Karen R. Koenig, an expert on the psychology of eating, you can transform your eating habits — and your life — by developing effective life skills. When you have enhanced skills, you won’t need to turn to mindless eating to make it through the day and will get the best out of life rather than letting life get the best of you. With Koenig’s guidance, you’ll learn how to establish and maintain functional relationships, take care of yourself physically and emotionally, think rationally, and create a passionate, joyful, and meaningful life. When these behaviors take root and become automatic, food becomes what it is meant to be: nourishment and one of life’s many pleasures.

Book excerpt: The Seas of Caladhan have never been safe for a woman… The warning had never rang more true for Brigid, who, as a fifteen year old stowaway, was tossed into the sea by the ruthless sailors she’d sought passage from. Left to die at the hands of the sea, no one expected the sea to show her mercy instead. Transformed into a syren at the hands of the ocean’s goddess, Brigid joins the band of bloodthirsty women intent on making themselves be the things in the ocean that sailors feared. Caelum has spent his entire life spurning the reputation his father had built. After years suffering the cruelty of the pirate captain, saving others from a similar fate was ingrained in him. For every evil deed his father carries out, Caelum is there, following him in an ever raging attempt to stop him. When Caelum is thrown into the seas by unforeseen forces, he comes face to face with a girl from his past. One he’d thought long dead by his father’s own hands. Shocked to see a familiar face among the wreckage of their latest target, Brigid makes a split second decision to save Caelum rather than let the syrens drown him. Her actions don’t go unnoticed though, and she’s forced to make an impossible choice: leave behind the syrens and the home she’d built for herself, or prove her loyalty and kill the only man who’d ever shown her kindness. But there’s a darkness lurking on the seas Brigid and Caelum both call home, and the consequences of their choices will catch up to them sooner than anyone realizes. And they have no idea how intertwined their stories truly are. • Pages : 165 pages

Download or read book Funny as a Dead Comic written by Susan Rogers Cooper and published by Speaking Volumes. This book was released on with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A gifted and perceptive writer whose characters are second to none.”—Sharyn McCrumb The many devoted readers of Susan Rogers Cooper's Milt Kovak mystery series have been noticed from time to time laughing out loud, even during a passage of thrilling drama. Obviously, the author is a very funny woman. And now she brings that aspect of her talent to fruition in the creation of Kimmey Kruse, stand-up comic. Kimmey is constantly assaulted by the public—bartenders, dentists, cleaning ladies—all trying to give her jokes. "I don't tell jokes! I'm a stand-up comic!" But she is just as funny offstage as on, and a character to be savored. Life at this point, however, is about as much fun as picking okra for our pint-sized comedian. While playing the Kaiser Komedy Klub in Chicago, she encounters a former lover, Cab Neusberg, whom she hasn't seen since the Laff-a-Lot club in Denver several years earlier. Planning a brief reprise, Cab arrives at Kimmey's hotel room only to expire in her arms just as things are getting interesting. That's not funny at all, and it's even less funny when Sal Pucci, the Chicago detective who catches the case, informs Kimmey that somebody gave Cab enough digitalis to kill a Buick with heart disease. Who could it have been, Ms. Kruse? As a kind of up-to-date Greek chorus with common sense, there is Kimmey's corporate lawyer friend Phoebe, a very present phone presence in whom Kimmey confides. Phoebe gives the comedian strong doses of reality and the name of the Chicago equivalent of super-lawyer Racehorse Haynes. She'll need it. “Funny as a Dead Comic deftly pulls back the curtain on a world both witty and sordid. Kimmey Kruse in her debut as comedian and crime-solver keeps the crowd laughing and the pages turning. Susan Rogers Cooper has created a stand-up tragedy of the first order.”—Kinky Friedman, author of Elvis, Jesus & Coca-Cola
