Book Status Report on Endangered Wildlife in Canada

Download or read book Status Report on Endangered Wildlife in Canada written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tephrosia virginiana L., or goat's-rue, is a perennial herb found in dry habitats in eastern North America. In Canada, it is found at the northern end of its range and only in a few populations in southern Ontario on the north shore of Lake Erie. This report describes the species and reviews its geographic distribution, biological and economic significance, general environment and habitat characteristics, population size and trends, reproductive ecology, factors limiting the survival and spread of the species, land ownership and management responsibility, and management practices and experience. Finally, the current status of the species is assessed along with its future prognosis, and a conservation status ranking is recommended.

Book Virginia Goat s rue Tephrosia Virginiana in Ontario

Download or read book Virginia Goat s rue Tephrosia Virginiana in Ontario written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Virginia Goat's-rue was never widespread in Canada. Historically it has been found at only four other sites, also in Norfolk County, Ontario. Its scarcity can be attributed to its restriction to acidic soils in tallgrass savannah and tallgrass woodland, which are rare habitat types in Ontario and Canada. In Ontario, Virginia Goat's-rue occurs mostly as scattered patches within Turkey Point Natural Area, a portion of Crown land that includes Turkey Point Provincial Park and St. Williams Conservation Reserve. The remainder, encompassing less than five percent of the total population size and area of habitat occupied, occurs on private land."--Executive Summary.

Book Roadside Use of Native Plants

Download or read book Roadside Use of Native Plants written by Bonnie Harper-Lore and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2000-09 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Office of Natural Environment to promote the planting and care of native plants along highway rights-of-way, this unique handbook provides managers of roadsides and adjacent lands with the information and background they need to make site-specific decisions about what kinds of native plants to use, and addresses basic techniques and misconceptions about using native plants. It brings together in a single volume a vast array of detailed information that has, until now, been scattered and difficult to find. The book opens with eighteen short essays on principles of ecological restoration and management from leading experts in the field including Reed F. Noss, J. Baird Callicott, Peggy Olwell, and Evelyn Howell. Following that is the heart of the book, more than 500 pages of comprehensive state-by-state listings that offer: a color map for each state with natural vegetations zones clearly marked comprehensive lists of native plants, broken down by type of plant (grasses, forbs, trees, etc.) and including both scientific and common names, with each list having been verified for completeness and accuracy by the state's natural heritage program contact names, addresses, and phone numbers for obtaining current information on invasive and noxious species to be avoided resources for more information, including contact names and addresses for local experts in each state The appendix adds definitions, bibliography, and policy citations to clarify any debates about the purpose and the direction of the use of native plants on roadsides.Roadside Use of Native Plants is a one-of-a-kind reference whose utility extends far beyond the roadside, offering a toolbox for a new aesthetic that can be applied to all kinds of public and private land. It can help lead the way to a cost-effective ecological approach to managing human-designed landscapes, and is an essential book for anyone interested in establishing or restoring native vegetation.

Download or read book The Butterflies of Iowa written by Dennis W. Schlicht and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautiful and comprehensive guide, many years in the making, is a manual for identifying the butterflies of Iowa as well as 90 percent of the butterflies in the Plains states. It begins by providing information on the natural communities of Iowa, paying special attention to butterfly habitat and distribution. Next come chapters on the history of lepidopteran research in Iowa and on creating butterfly gardens, followed by an intriguing series of questions and issues relevant to the study of butterflies in the state. The second part contains accounts, organized by family, for the 118 species known to occur in Iowa. Each account includes the common and scientific names for each species, its Opler and Warren number, its status in Iowa, adult flight times and number of broods per season, distinguishing features, distribution and habitat, and natural history information such as behavior and food plant preferences. As a special feature of each account, the authors have included questions that illuminate the research and conservation challenges for each species. In the third section, the illustrations, grouped for easier comparison among species, include color photographs of all the adult forms that occur in Iowa. Male and female as well as top and bottom views are shown for most species. The distribution maps indicate in which of Iowa’s ninety-nine counties specimens have been collected; flight times for each species are shown by marking the date of collection for each verified specimen on a yearly calendar. The book ends with a checklist, collection information specific to the photographs, a glossary, references, and an index. The authors’ meticulous attention to detail, stimulating questions for students and researchers, concern for habitat preservation, and joyful appreciation of the natural world make it a valuable and inspiring volume.
