Download or read book Status Report on the Cryptic Paw Lichen Nephroma Occultum in Canada written by Trevor Goward and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nephroma occultum (Cryptic Modest Lichen) is a member of the Nephromataceae (or Peltigeraceae) known to occur in Canada only in the humid, primarily old growth forests of British Columbia. It is a rounded, loosely appressed, foliose (leaf) lichen. This report provides species information such as description, biological and economic significance, distribution, environment and habitat characteristics, population biology, population ecology, land ownership and management responsibility, management practices and experience, evidence of threats to survival, and legal or other formal status. It goes on to offer an assessment of the status for the species and information sources.

Download or read book Lichens of North America written by Irwin M. Brodo and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 838 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lichens are a unique form of plant life, the product of a symbiotic association between an alga and a fungus. The beauty and importance of lichens have long been overlooked, despite their abundance and diversity in most parts of North America and elsewhere in the world. This stunning book--the first accessible and authoritative guidebook to lichens of the North American continent--fills the gap, presenting superb color photographs, descriptions, distribution maps, and keys for identifying the most common, conspicuous, or ecologically significant species. The book focuses on 805 foliose, fruticose, and crustose lichens (the latter rarely included in popular guidebooks) and presents information on another 700 species in the keys or notes; special attention is given to species endemic to North America. A comprehensive introduction discusses the biology, structure, uses, and ecological significance of lichens and is illustrated with 90 additional color photos and many line drawings. English names are provided for most species, and the book also includes a glossary that explains technical terms. This visually rich and informative book will open the eyes of nature lovers everywhere to the fascinating world of lichens.

Book Temperate and Boreal Rainforests of the World

Download or read book Temperate and Boreal Rainforests of the World written by Dominick A. DellaSala and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temperate rainforests are biogeographically unique. Compared to their tropical counterparts, temperate rainforests are rarer and are found disproportionately along coastlines. Because most temperate rainforests are marked by the intersection of marine, terrestrial, and freshwater systems, these rich ecotones are among the most productive regions on Earth. Globally, temperate rainforests store vast amounts of carbon, provide habitat for scores of rare and endemic species with ancient affinities, and sustain complex food-web dynamics. In spite of their global significance, however, protection levels for these ecosystems are far too low to sustain temperate rainforests under a rapidly changing global climate and ever expanding human footprint. Therefore, a global synthesis is needed to provide the latest ecological science and call attention to the conservation needs of temperate and boreal rainforests. A concerted effort to internationalize the plight of the world’s temperate and boreal rainforests is underway around the globe; this book offers an essential (and heretofore missing) tool for that effort. DellaSala and his contributors tell a compelling story of the importance of temperate and boreal rainforests that includes some surprises (e.g., South Africa, Iran, Turkey, Japan, Russia). This volume provides a comprehensive reference from which to build a collective vision of their future.

Book The Lichens of British Columbia

Download or read book The Lichens of British Columbia written by Trevor Goward and published by Ministry of Forests Research Program. This book was released on 1994 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual provides illustrated keys to all leaf and scale lichens known to occur in British Columbia. In total, 327 species are included, while 19 taxa are excluded from earlier accounts of the flora. Accompanying the keys are approximately 350 line drawings. The manual briefly summarizes the ecology, distribution, and frequency status of the province's foliose and squamulose lichens. Each genus account provides a common name, a short description, pertinent references, notes on the derivation of the common name, and notes on global status and distribution, taxonomy, chemistry, and/or similar genera. Each species account provides species and author citation, distribution maps, common names, habit, and lichen distribution in B.C.

Book Forest Biodiversity in North Central and South America and the Caribbean Research and Monitoring

Download or read book Forest Biodiversity in North Central and South America and the Caribbean Research and Monitoring written by J.A. Comiskey and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-11-15 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of two high-level, data-rich volumes from the massive Smithsonian/MAB Biological Diversity Program documenting the latest findings on forest biodiversity. In original contributions, some three hundred scientists from over forty countries discuss socioeconomic aspects, ecological monitoring and assessment, forest dynamics, growth trends, dry forests, species richness of woody regeneration and of vascular plants, hurricane impact, tropical cloud forests, Landsat-TM satellite mapping, and quantitative ethnobotany. The book covers first the research and monitoring methodologies for the New World and then the results of individual research and integrated studies on all aspects of forest biodiversity in North and South America and the Caribbean.

Book Land Snails of British Columbia

Download or read book Land Snails of British Columbia written by Robert G. Forsyth and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Snails and slugs have a reputation as slimy, repulsive creatures that are nothing more than garden pests, but they are important components of the ecosystems they live in. In fact, most of the pest slugs and snails are introduced species that have come here with the plants we import for our gardens. Worldwide there are more species of snails and slugs than all the mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians combined, yet they are often overlooked because of their relatively small size. Land snails and slugs are well adapted to live in almost any kind of environment, from high arctic tundra to tropical forests. In British Columbia, they can be found just about everywhere. Land Snails of British Columbia describes all 92 species of terrestrial molluscs in our province. It includes photographs and detailed drawings of each, diagnostic keys and a selection of colour photographs to aid in identification. With each species description, the author discusses its natural history and distribution in the province. He also talks about reproduction, life history, diet, locomotion and shell structure (even slugs have shells). Nature buffs and anyone interested in looking past the bad reputation of these much-maligned creatures will find this handbook an enlightening guide. For gardeners, this book will tell you which snails to cast out of your garden and which ones to keep, because some snails and slugs are beneficial to gardens and some even prey on their pestilent relatives."--
