Comprehensively covering all major aspects of the relationship of the Atlantic salmon with its environment, chapters include details of migration and dispersal, reproduction, habitat requirements, feeding, growth rates, competition, predation, parasitsm, population dynamics, effects of landscape use, hydro power development, climate change, and exploitation. The book closes with a summary and look at possible future research directions. Backed by the Norwegian Research Council and with editors and contributors widely known and respected, Atlantic Salmon Ecology is an essential purchase for all those working with this species, including fisheries scientists and managers, fish biologists, ecologists, physiologists, environmental biologists and aquatic scientists, fish and wildlife department personnel and regulatory bodies. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where these subjects are studied and taught should have copies of this important publication. Download or read book Status of Atlantic Salmon Salmo Salar L Stock of Harry s River Pinchgut Brook Newfoundland 1998 written by C. C. Mullins and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harry's River is the most northerly of the eight scheduled Atlantic salmon rivers flowing into Bay St. George, Salmon Fishing Area (SFA) 13. The recreational fishery on this river was under quota management until 1995 and the river has been closed to retention angling since 1996. In 1993-95, after the introduction of the commercial fishery moratorium, recreational catches of small salmon remained among the lowest on record but large salmon showed signs of improvement. However, estimates of spawning escapements in those years indicate that the population size of both small and large salmon remained at a low level. This document presents the seventh assessment of the status of the Atlantic salmon stock of Harry's River since 1992. The status of the stock is assessed relative to the conservation requirement based on counts of adult salmon at the counting fence on Pinchgut Brook tributary and spawning surveys of the entire river system.

Book Status of Rocky and Little Rivers Atlantic Salmon Salmo Salar L Stocks of the Newfoundland Region in 1998

Download or read book Status of Rocky and Little Rivers Atlantic Salmon Salmo Salar L Stocks of the Newfoundland Region in 1998 written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two watersheds in Newfoundland discussed in this paper have all undergone Atlantic salmon enhancement or stocking activities. Rocky River on the Avalon Peninsula was the site of a colonization project where a run of Atlantic salmon was established. Little River, which flows into the Bay d'Espoir, is the site of an ongoing ranching project with associated fry stocking. The intent of this document is to review the status of Atlantic salmon stocks in the two watersheds in 1998. Information is included on watershed characteristics, conservation requirements, enhancement/stocking activities, management restrictions, salmon fecundity, egg depositions, smolt counts, smolt to adult survival, egg to smolt survival, parr rearing, and predicted versus observed adult returns.

Book Atlantic Salmon Salmo Salar Stock Status Update in Newfoundland and Labrador for 2015

Download or read book Atlantic Salmon Salmo Salar Stock Status Update in Newfoundland and Labrador for 2015 written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three of the four (75%) monitored rivers in Labrador and eight of the 12 (67%) monitored rivers in Newfoundland (excludes Rocky River) achieved conservation in 2015. Salmon returns to Newfoundland and Labrador rivers have increased since the closure of the commercial salmon fisheries, with the exception of some rivers on Newfoundland's south coast. In general, annual returns of Atlantic Salmon are highly variable and populations on the south coast continue to decline. The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) designated South Newfoundland (SFAs 9-12) Atlantic Salmon populations as threatened in 2010 (COSEWIC 2010). Marine survival is considered to be a major factor limiting the abundance of Atlantic Salmon within the region.
