Book Statistical Analysis of Human Growth and Development

Download or read book Statistical Analysis of Human Growth and Development written by Yin Bun Cheung and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical Analysis of Human Growth and Development is an accessible and practical guide to a wide range of basic and advanced statistical methods that are useful for studying human growth and development. Designed for nonstatisticians and statisticians new to the analysis of growth and development data, the book collects methods scattered throughout the literature and explains how to use them to solve common research problems. It also discusses how well a method addresses a specific scientific question and how to interpret and present the analytic results. Stata is used to implement the analyses, with Stata codes and macros for generating example data sets, a detrended Q-Q plot, and weighted maximum likelihood estimation of binary items available on the book’s CRC Press web page. After reviewing research designs and basic statistical tools, the author discusses the use of existing tools to transform raw data into analyzable variables and back-transform them to raw data. He covers regression analysis of quantitative, binary, and censored data as well as the analysis of repeated measurements and clustered data. He also describes the development of new growth references and developmental indices, the generation of key variables based on longitudinal data, and the processes to verify the validity and reliability of measurement tools. Looking at the larger picture of research practice, the book concludes with coverage of missing values, multiplicity problems, and multivariable regression. Along with two simulated data sets, numerous examples from real experimental and observational studies illustrate the concepts and methods. Although the book focuses on examples of anthropometric measurements and changes in cognitive, social-emotional, locomotor, and other abilities, the ideas are applicable to many other physical and psychosocial phenomena, such as lung function and depressive symptoms.

Book Research and Development Statistics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviews of United Kingdom Statistical Sources are comprehensive and authoritative surveys of the economic and social statistics for the United Kingdom. They are indispensable to anyone who needs to gain a thorough understanding of the sources for the study of the area under consideration. This volume is concerned with the key area of investment in research and development activity. It considers the approaches adopted to the measurement of the level and nature of R&D. The real levels of commitment to R&D form strategic information for business enterprise and governments who are increasingly concerned about quality competition. In particular it reviews expenditure and manpowere measures of R&D activity. The detailed listings are preceded by definitions of R&D related to the sciope and limitations of the data collected. All those working on technological change and industrial economics will need this book.

Book Data on Federal Research and Development Investments

Download or read book Data on Federal Research and Development Investments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-01-27 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two surveys of the National Science Foundation's Division of Science Resources Statistics (SRS) provide some of the most significant data available to understand research and development spending and policy in the United States. These are the Survey of Federal Funds for Research and Development and the Survey of Federal Science and Engineering Support to Universities, Colleges, and Nonprofit Institutions. These surveys help reach conclusions about fundamental policy questions, such as whether a given field of research is adequately funded, whether funding is balanced among fields, and whether deficiencies in funding may be contributing to a loss of U.S. scientific or economic competitiveness. However, the survey data are of insufficient quality and timeliness to support many of the demands put on them. In addition the surveys are increasingly difficult to conduct in times of constrained resources, and their technological, procedural, and conceptual infrastructure has not been modernized for procedure or content. Data on Federal Research and Development Investments reviews the uses and collection of data on federal funds and federal support for science and technology and recommends future directions for the program based on an assessment of these uses and the adequacy of the surveys. The book also considers the classification structure, or taxonomy, for the fields of science and engineering.

Book Improving Measures of Science Technology and Innovation

Download or read book Improving Measures of Science Technology and Innovation written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-02-17 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES), at the U.S. National Foundation, is 1 of 14 major statistical agencies in the federal government, of which at least 5 collect relevant information on science, technology, and innovation activities in the United States and abroad. The America COMPETES Reauthorization Act of 2010 expanded and codified NCSES's role as a U.S. federal statistical agency. Important aspects of the agency's mandate include collection, acquisition, analysis, and reporting and dissemination of data on research and development trends, on U.S. competitiveness in science, technology, and research and development, and on the condition and progress of U.S. science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Improving Measures of Science, Technology and Innovation: Interim Report examines the status of the NCSES's science, technology, and innovation (STI) indicators. This report assesses and provides recommendations regarding the need for revised, refocused, and newly developed indicators designed to better reflect fundamental and rapid changes that are reshaping global science, technology and innovation systems. The book also determines the international scope of STI indicators and the need for developing new indicators that measure developments in innovative activities in the United States and abroad, and Offers foresight on the types of data, metrics and indicators that will be particularly influential in evidentiary policy decision-making for years to come. In carrying out its charge, the authoring panel undertook a broad and comprehensive review of STI indicators from different countries, including Japan, China, India and several countries in Europe, Latin America and Africa. Improving Measures of Science, Technology, and Innovation makes recommendations for near-term action by NCSES along two dimensions: (1) development of new policy-relevant indicators that are based on NCSES survey data or on data collections at other statistical agencies; and (2) exploration of new data extraction and management tools for generating statistics, using automated methods of harvesting unstructured or scientometric data and data derived from administrative records.

Book Statistical Principles of Research Design and Analysis

Download or read book Statistical Principles of Research Design and Analysis written by R. O. Kuehl and published by Duxbury Resource Center. This book was released on 1994 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides an overall research design strategy by emphasizing how research hypotheses relate to treatment design. The author provides as realistic a setting as possible for conducting an actual research project. Examples, often based on actual research studies, describe the research venue and establish a specific problem; then the corresponding research hypothesis is identified with a treatment design that addresses it. The examples provide practical pointers relating the treatment design to the experiment design.

Book Review of Proposals for Research on Statistical Methodologies for Assessing Variables in Eyewitness Performance

Download or read book Review of Proposals for Research on Statistical Methodologies for Assessing Variables in Eyewitness Performance written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognizing the importance of eyewitness identifications in courts of law and motivated by data showing that at least one erroneous eyewitness identification was associated with almost 75% of cases where defendants were later exonerated by DNA evidence, in 2013 the Laura and John Arnold Foundation asked the National Academy of Sciences to undertake an assessment of the scientific research on eyewitness identification and offer recommendations to improve eyewitness performance. The appointed committee issued its report, Identifying the Culprit: Assessing Eyewitness Identification, in 2014. In order to stimulate new and innovative research on statistical tools and the interrelationships between system and estimator variables, the Arnold Foundation in 2015 again called upon the National Academies. This report describes the development of the request for proposals, the processes followed by the committee as it evaluated the proposals, and the committee's assessment of the scientific merit and research design of the proposals.
