This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Statistical Report of the United States Deciduous Fruit Export Season, 1938-39 Exports of boxed apples amounted to boxes, or about boxes more than those during 1937-38. This movement was slightly above the average of boxes exported in the 5-year period 1931-32 to 1935-36. The United Kingdom accounted for boxes or around 36 per cent of the total. Exports to France, the second most important market for boxed apples, amounted to boxes, or about 18 percent of the total. European countries as a whole took over 85 percent of the boxed exports. Or 5 percent more than they took during the 1937-38 season. The largest increases in shipments during 1938-39 were to the United Kingdom, Sweden, Belgium, Denmark, and Norway, while exports to Germany, Canada, Egypt, and the Netherlands were below those of the previous year. Boxed apples averaged around a box for the season, or 8 cents a box more than the average for the previous season. Boxed shipments were equiv alent to around 17 percent of the total production and an percent of the commercial production in the four Western box States. In this connection, however, allowance must be made for the increasing use of the box-crate pack in the Eastern States. Exports of Eastern-grown apples in box-crates showed a substantial increase during the 1938-39 season. No separate statistics on the volume of Eastern box-crate apple exports, however, are available. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Statistical Report of the United States Deciduous Fruit Export Season, 1939-40 Generally Speaking, exports of fresh apples and pears were more severely curtailed than were exports of the canned fruit products. Exports of dried fruit also declined substantially since trade with the countries of continental Europe, which normally absorb the bulk of most of these exports, was seriously interfered with and late in the season virtually cut off by the extension of the war. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruit, United States Foreign Trade Related to Production 1910-1949: A Statistical Handbook Contrary to general opinion the United States was a net importer of fruit dming the four decades with the exception of the 1934 season and the three war years, 1942, 1943, and 1944. Of course, the relatively large annual imports of bananas were the principal factor. If bwanas are excluded from the imported volume, the country would have been on a net export basis for the entire period except in the 1921 season when domestic production was reduced sharply by a heavy late frost. Including bananas, the United States had available for consumption in the 1910 season the equivalent of percent more fruit than was produced domestically while in 1949 the net import was percent of moduction. For the period 1910 to 1922, inclusive, net imports ranged between percent (1918) and percent (1921) of: production, while for the favorable export period, 1923 to 1938, inclusive, the range was between percent (1934) export surplus to percent (1929) net imports. For the World War II and subsequent years, 1939 to 1949: inclusive, the supply of fruit available for consumption varied from percent (1943) less than woduction to percent (1940) more than production. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the course of evolution, a great variety of root systems have learned to overcome the many physical, biochemical and biological problems brought about by soil. This development has made them a fascinating object of scientific study. This volume gives an overview of how roots have adapted to the soil environment and which roles they play in the soil ecosystem. The text describes the form and function of roots, their temporal and spatial distribution, and their turnover rate in various ecosystems. Subsequently, a physiological background is provided for basic functions, such as carbon acquisition, water and solute movement, and for their responses to three major abiotic stresses, i.e. hard soil structure, drought and flooding. The volume concludes with the interactions of roots with other organisms of the complex soil ecosystem, including symbiosis, competition, and the function of roots as a food source.
