Book excerpt: Lake Tahoe is a popular national resource for recreational and scenic attractions, but is impaired due to excess fine sediment and nutrients (NDEP, 2011). Nutrients can stimulate algal growth, which also reduces clarity. The nutrients of greatest impact to water quality are nitrogen and phosphorus. The approach of this study is to use a trend analysis of long-term water quality and discharge data for six streams that enter Lake Tahoe during the late 1980s through 2008. The results of the model confirm that nutrient loading is influenced strongly by season, especially spring runoff from snowmelt. The highest concentrations or loads occurred in the late 1980s and early 1990s, typically during high flows, followed by significant decreases in concentration in most streams for total nitrogen. The results for total phosphorus, however, have a less noticeable reduction, and in some cases appear stable, and therefore, uninfluenced by BMP implementations. The six streams are located north, south, east, and west of the lake, indicating a regional improvement in stream management compared to the concentrations found the early 1990s. However, most of the streams in this study indicated an increase in concentrations after 2000. A possibility for this is the BMPs are either requiring maintenance, or an increase in anthropogenic activities has surpassed the ability of the existing BMPs to prevent nutrients from entering the streams during high flux. The increase in concentration during base flow may be due to increased concentrations of nutrients in the groundwater that enters the streams.

Current understanding of P processes has evolved and this new information needs to be incorporated into the current models. Filling this need, Modeling Phosphorus in the Environment describes basic approaches to modeling P, how the current models implement these approaches, and ways to improve them. The book sets the scene with a review of general approaches to modeling runoff and erosion, P in runoff, leaching of P, stream processes that affect P, and an examination of the important issue of model uncertainty. It describes state-of-the-science watershed-scale P transport models including dynamic semi-disturbed models, models of intermediate complexity, and two lumped models. Phosphorus Indexes (PIs) represent one end of the modeling spectrum and the book takes a comprehensive look at PIs developed in each state, and illustrates some of the problems encountered when incorporating PIs into farm-scale manure management software. The book discusses monitoring data, which is critical for calibrating models, and concludes with suggestions for improving the modeling of P. Recent trends are towards increasingly lower phosphorus limits, requiring reliable lower and lower phosphorus measurements. There is a long history of P analysis in dilute matrices; i.e., river and lake water and best practices have been developed. These best practices for surface waters are reported herein. Potential issues in wastewater P analysis by colorimetry include, pH, proton to molybdenum ratio, color development time, and digestion method. Of equal importance are the QA/QC measurement protocols implemented by wastewater analysis labs; demonstrably well performing examples from Coeur d'Alene, Spokane, and the City of Las Vegas are presented. Total reactive phosphorus is an ambiguous analytical measurement because the quantitative results depend strongly on color development time. For low level analysis, long path lengths have advantages in more precisely resolving low concentrations. Replicate measurements are essential, especially for low level P samples, in order to capture the true value of the sample within variability.When dealing with low concentrations even a small absolute error is a large relative error; thus, replicate measurements are essential to estimate true concentrations for dilute phosphorus samples.
