Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the growth of size and scale of the dataset, data are naturally collected or stored in multiple terminals in many scenarios. In these cases, each terminal may not have full information about all the variables involved in learning or inference problems and it may need to send compressed data due to the limitation of communication channel capacity. Different from the centralized case where all information is stored in one terminal, we have to utilize compressed data directly for statistical inference and learning in the distributed case. In this dissertation, we investigate the distributed statistical inference problems using information theoretic tools. In particular, we consider problems consisting of L encoders {X[subscript l}[subscript l=1][superscript L], and one decision maker Y, in which terminal X[subscript l] has local data related to random variable X[subscript l] only and terminal Y has data related to random variable Y only. In these problems, terminals {X[subscript l}[subscript l=1][superscript L] send compressed data to terminal Y. Based on the received data along with its local information, terminal Y makes a decision about the joint probability mass function (PMF) of (X1,···,X[subscript L],Y) from given hypotheses [special characters omitted] and [special characters omitted]. Using Neyman-Pearson criterion, our goal is to maximize the type 2 error exponent under the constraints on the type 1 error probability and communication rates. Three increasingly sophisticated scenarios are considered in this dissertation: 1) Basic model with non-interactive communications; 2) The scenario with cascaded communications; and 3) The scenario with model uncertainties. We first characterize the fundamental limits of using compressed data in the non-interactive case. We provide a lower bound on the type 2 error exponent for the general PMF case and establish both a lower bound and an upper bound for the special case of testing against independence. Moreover, we study the optimal inference performance with a diminishing communication rate (zero rate) and show that for certain distributions, the performance is as good as that in the centralized case. We then extend our study to a more complicated case with cascaded communication among terminals {X[subscript l}[subscript l=1][superscript L]. To be specific, we assume that these terminals broadcast their messages in a sequential order from terminal X1 to terminal X[subscript L], and each terminal uses all previously received messages along with its own observations for encoding. We investigate both the case with a general PMF and a special case of testing against independence. We show that for certain PMFs, cascaded communication will help in improving the inference performance. However, we also prove that cascaded communication does not help in the case with zero-rate data compression. Finally, we consider the case with uncertainties in the model. In this case, instead of knowing exact forms of the PMF in both hypotheses, we only have partial information about them. One of these problems is called distributed identity testing and it can be transformed into two composite hypothesis testing problems. We focus on the more complex one and establish bounds on the type 2 error exponent for both the case with a general PMF and the special case of testing against independence under constraints on the type 1 error probability and communication rates. Furthermore, we provide a matching upper and lower bound on the type 2 error exponent for the zero-rate data compression case.

It is becoming increasingly challenging to sense, store, transport, or process (i.e., for inference) the acquired data. To alleviate these problems, it is evident that there is an urgent need to significantly reduce the sensing cost (i.e., the number of expensive sensors) as well as the related memory and bandwidth requirements by developing unconventional sensing mechanisms to extract as much information as possible yet collecting fewer data. The aim of this monograph is therefore to develop theory and algorithms for smart data reduction. We develop a data reduction tool called sparse sensing, which consists of a deterministic and structured sensing function (guided by a sparse vector) that is optimally designed to achieve a desired inference performance with the reduced number of data samples. We develop sparse sensing mechanisms, convex programs, and greedy algorithms to efficiently design sparse sensing functions, where we assume that the data is not yet available and the model information is perfectly known. Sparse sensing offers a number of advantages over compressed sensing (a state-of-the-art data reduction method for sparse signal recovery). One of the major differences is that in sparse sensing the underlying signals need not be sparse. This allows for general signal processing tasks (not just sparse signal recovery) under the proposed sparse sensing framework. Specifically, we focus on fundamental statistical inference tasks, like estimation, filtering, and detection. In essence, we present topics that transform classical (e.g., random or uniform) sensing methods to low-cost data acquisition mechanisms tailored for specific inference tasks. The developed framework can be applied to sensor selection, sensor placement, or sensor scheduling, for example.

Book excerpt: With the increasing popularization of the Internet, together with the rapid development of 3D scanning technologies and modeling tools, 3D model databases have become more and more common in fields such as biology, chemistry, archaeology and geography. People can distribute their own 3D works over the Internet, search and download 3D model data, and also carry out electronic trade over the Internet. However, some serious issues are related to this as follows: (1) How to efficiently transmit and store huge 3D model data with limited bandwidth and storage capacity; (2) How to prevent 3D works from being pirated and tampered with; (3) How to search for the desired 3D models in huge multimedia databases. This book is devoted to partially solving the above issues. Compression is useful because it helps reduce the consumption of expensive resources, such as hard disk space and transmission bandwidth. On the downside, compressed data must be decompressed to be used, and this extra processing may be detrimental to some applications. 3D polygonal mesh (with geometry, color, normal vector and texture coordinate information), as a common surface representation, is now heavily used in various multimedia applications such as computer games, animations and simulation applications. To maintain a convincing level of realism, many applications require highly detailed mesh models. However, such complex models demand broad network bandwidth and much storage capacity to transmit and store. To address these problems, 3D mesh compression is essential for reducing the size of 3D model representation.
