Book excerpt: Excerpt from Statistical Data of the Jewish Religious Schools of Baltimore, Maryland and Pittsburg, Pennsylvania: For 1908-1909 The Gratz College of Philadelphia, in furtherance of its general purpose of preparing teachers for Jewish religious schools and stimulating religious instruction, published, in 1907, statistical data of the Jewish Religious Schools of Philadelphia. Believing that progress in the direction of Jewish education, as well as in any other undertaking, depends largely upon a knowledge of existing conditions, it was decided to extend this inquiry to the neighboring city of Baltimore and to the second largest city in the State of Pennsylvania, Pittsburg, and the results of the inquiry are here presented. It is hoped that similar investigations will soon be made as to the status of Jewish elementary education in other centres of Jewish life in this country. The editor desires to make grateful acknowledgment to all who have aided in bringing this material together, and especially in Baltimore to Mr. B. H. Hartogensis and Mr. Morris A. Rome, and in Pittsburg to Rev. Dr. Rudolph I. Coffee, who have given much time and labor to this work in their respective cities. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the Great War and Pearl Harbor, conservative labor leaders declared themselves America's "first line of defense" against Communism. In this surprising account, Jennifer Luff shows how the American Federation of Labor fanned popular anticommunism but defended Communists' civil liberties in the aftermath of the 1919 Red Scare. The AFL's "commonsense anticommunism," she argues, steered a middle course between the American Legion and the ACLU, helping to check campaigns for federal sedition laws. But in the 1930s, frustration with the New Deal order led labor conservatives to redbait the Roosevelt administration and liberal unionists and abandon their reluctant civil libertarianism for red scare politics. That frustration contributed to the legal architecture of federal anticommunism that culminated with the McCarthyist fervor of the 1950s. Relying on untapped archival sources, Luff reveals how labor conservatives and the emerging civil liberties movement debated the proper role of the state in policing radicals and grappled with the challenges to the existing political order posed by Communist organizers. Surprising conclusions about familiar figures, like J. Edgar Hoover, and unfamiliar episodes, like a German plot to disrupt American munitions manufacture, make Luff's story a fresh retelling of the interwar years.

These moral evaluations are, in turn, influenced by such external contingencies as popula tion demography, social and economic factors, subsistence strategies, house hold composition, and by cultural ideas concerning the nature of infancy and childhood, definitions of personhood, and beliefs about the soul and its immortality. MOTHER LOVE AND CHILD DEATH Of all the many factors that endanger the lives of young children, by far the most difficult to examine with any degree of dispassionate objectivity is the quality of parenting. Historians and social scientists, no less than the public at large, are influenced by old cultural myths about childhood inno cence and mother love as well as their opposites. The terrible power and significance attributed to maternal behavior (in particular) is a commonsense perception based on the observation that the human infant (specialized as it is for prematurity and prolonged dependency) simply cannot survive for very long without considerable maternal love and care. The infant's life depends, to a very great extent, on the good will of others, but most especially, of course, that of the mother. Consequently, it has been the fate of mothers throughout history to appear in strange and distorted forms. They may appear as larger than life or as invisible; as all-powerful and destructive; or as helpless and angelic. Myths of the maternal instinct compete, historically, witli -myths of a universal infanticidal impulse.
