Download or read book The Biology Of Social Insects written by Michael D. Breed and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book internationally known experts provide a comprehensive view of current knowledge of social insect biology including much previously unpublished information. Particular emphasis is given to the relationships between social insects and humans; sections are devoted to economically important social insects, pollination, foraging, and the role of insects in ecosystems and agroecosystems. The authors also discuss communication, behavior and caste within insect colonies. A special section focuses on the neurobiology of social insects. A series of papers considers the presocial insects, which live in family groups but without caste differences. Also well represented are the fields of sociobiology and the origins and evolution of social behavior. The book will be valuable to agricultural scientists as well as to entomologists, sociobiologists, ecologists, ethologists, and natural historians. Endocrinologists and neurobiologists will also find important new material.
Download or read book Honeybees of Africa written by H. Randall Hepburn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of the honeybees of Africa on a subspecies as well as by country basis. Includes an updated multivariate analysis of the subspecies based on the merger of the Ruttner database (Oberursel) and that of Hepburn & Radloff (Grahamstown) for nearly 20,000 bees. Special emphasis is placed on natural zones of hybridisation and introgression of different populations; seasonal cycles of development in different ecological-climatological zones of the continent; swarming, migration and absconding; and an analysis of the bee flora of the continent. The text is supplemented by tables containing quantitative data on all aspects of honeybee biology, and by continental and regional maps.

Download or read book Fire Ants And Leaf cutting Ants written by Clifford S. Lofgren and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-03-08 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1985 Research Conference on Fire Ants and Leaf-Cutting Ants covered the most recent developments in research and control of these insect pests of the New World tropical and subtropical zones, the southern United States, South and Central America, and the Caribbean Islands. This volume contains chapters that discuss the history and economics, biology and ecology, behavior, pheromones and other semiochemicals, physiology, and biochemistry of fire ants and leaf-cutting ants, as well as current and future control strategies. The information provided illustrates past and present agricultural and medical problems associated with these pest ants; however, it also brings out the point that they may at times be beneficial. The chapters on basic aspects of the biology and ecology of the ants provide up-to-date information that is useful for a more complete understanding of their social behavior and the unique symbiotic relationship between leaf-cutting ants and their fungi. New approaches to control are illustrated by innovative research on anti-feedant chemicals from plants that prevent feeding by leaf-cutting ants. The present status of chemical baits and biocontrol is addressed, as well as the possibilities of future novel methods based on the use of anti-metabolites, insect hormones, behavior modifying substances, and species-specific toxic bait systems to create integrated pest management systems.

Book excerpt: The Permanent Inventory of AGricultural REsearch Projects (AGREP) is an information system on current projects in agriculture and related fields in the Member States of the European Communities (Belgium, Denmark, Federal Republic of Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom). Its creation is based upon a regulation of the Council of Ministers of the European Communities concerning the coordination of agricultural research (Council Regulation No 1728174 of 27 June, 1974). AGREP covers agriculture in an extensive sense of the word, i.e. including fields like fisheries and forestry, land use and development, conservation of nature, veterinary medicine, food science and technology, as well as agricultural economics and rural sociology. A detailed scope description is given in the subject classification facets "fields of research" and "subject areas" as presented on the introductory pages of the two printed volumes. The data base is fully computerized. It is available in printed form and on magnetic tape. On-line access is offered by EURONETIDIANE (DIrect Access Network for Europe). The data base is updated annually. The ,1980 issue of AGREP contains about 21.000 title citations of agricultural research projects. AGREP is a cooperative system. The national focal points (NFPs) collect input and provide it in an agreed format to the Commission which sponsors the management of the system and the provision of output to the Member Countries.
