Book Station Blackout

Download or read book Station Blackout written by Charles A. Casto and published by Radius Book Group. This book was released on 2018 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan was rocked by a powerful earthquake and within an hour inundated by a devastating tsunami, on March 11, 2011. Three nuclear reactors at the Fukushima power plant experienced core meltdowns, resulting in the catastrophic release of radiation into the ground, air, and water. In Station Blackout, Chuck Casto shares his first-hand account, as the foremost authority on responding to nuclear disasters, of how he led the team that faced the challenges of Fukushima. A lifetime of working in the nuclear industry prepared him to manage an extreme crisis, lessons that apply to any crisis situation.

Book Anticipated and Abnormal Plant Transients in Light Water Reactors

Download or read book Anticipated and Abnormal Plant Transients in Light Water Reactors written by Pamela Lassahn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last 30 years, reactor safety technology has evolved not so much from a need to recover from accidents or incidents, but primarily from many groups in the nuclear community asking hypo thetical, searching (what if) ~uestions. This ~uestioning has indeed paid off in establishing preventive measures for many types of events and potential accidents. Conditions, such as reactivity excursions, large break, loss of coolant, core melt, and contain ment integrity loss, to name a few, were all at one time topics of protracted discussions on hypothesized events. Historically, many of these have become multiyear, large-scale research programs aimed at resolving the "what ifs. " For the topic of anticipated and abnormal plant transients, how ever, the searching ~uestions and the research were not so prolific until the mid-1970s. At that time, probabilistic risk methodolo gies began to tell us we should change our emphasis in reactor safety research and development and focus more on small pipe breaks and plant transients. Three Mile Island punctuated that message in 1979. The plant transient topic area is a multidisciplinary subject involving not only the nuclear, fluid flow, and heat transfer technologies, but also the synergistics of these with the reactor control systems, the safety s;,"stems, operator actions, maintenance and even management and the economic considerations of a given plant.

Book Design Provisions for Withstanding Station Blackout at Nuclear Power Plants

Download or read book Design Provisions for Withstanding Station Blackout at Nuclear Power Plants written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA Tecdoc. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication provides information for new plant designs as well as modifications to existing operating nuclear power plants to cope with extended station blackout. It describes a common international technical basis to be considered when establishing all the criteria for a station blackout event, and outlines critical issues which reflect the lessons learned applicable to electrical systems from the Fukushima Daiichi accident. The publication describes current plant practices and design provisions for withstanding a station blackout event already implemented at some nuclear power plants. It also provides proposals for improvement of existing plant designs to increase the robustness of the electrical power systems for contending with a station blackout event.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ''Station Blackout, '' which is the complete loss of alternating current (AC) electrical power in a nuclear power plant, has been designated as Unresolved Safety Issue A-44. Because many safety systems required for reactor core decay heat removal and containment heat removal depend on AC power, the consequences of a station blackout could be severe. This report documents the findings of technical studies performed as part of the program to resolve this issue. The important factors analyzed include: the fequency of loss of offsite power; the probability that emergency or onsite AC power supplies would be unavailable; the capability and reliability of decay heat removal systems independent of AC power; and the likelihood that offsite power would be restored before systems that cannot operate for extended periods without AC power fail, thus resulting in core damage. This report also addresses effects of different designs, locations, and operational features on the estimated frequency of core damage resulting from station blackout events.

Book Station Blackout at Nuclear Power Plants

Download or read book Station Blackout at Nuclear Power Plants written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent work on station blackout is reviewed its radiological implications for a nuclear war scenario is explored. The major conclusion is that the effects of radiation from many nuclear weapon detonations in a nuclear war would swamp those from possible reactor accidents that result from station blackout.
