Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to identify similarities and differences between the positions of Finland (as an EU Member State) and China, on Arctic law and governance. The book compares Finnish and Chinese legal and policy stances in specific policy areas of relevance for the Arctic, including maritime sovereignty, scientific research, marine protected areas, the Svalbard Treaty and Arctic Council co-operation. Building on these findings, the book offers general conclusions on Finnish and Chinese approaches to Arctic governance and international law, as well as new theoretical insights on Arctic governance. The book is the result of a collaboration between The Northern Institute for Environmental and Minority Law (Arctic Centre, University of Lapland) and researchers from Wuhan University.

Book India and International Law

Download or read book India and International Law written by Bimal N. Patel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2005-09-01 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India has been a torchbearer in enhancing the ideals of international law. It has made persistent efforts to, among other things, promote a democratic multilateral legal framework, eliminate global economic inequality, enhance true democratic values and human rights, protect the environment and achieve sustainable development. India and International Law examines how India has attempted to achieve these goals in international relations and what has been therefore its contribution to the codification and progressive development of international law. The work will be a useful reference tool to scholars, academicians and policy-makers who are seeking practical expertise on India’s policy and practical approach to international law. It provides excellent reference to the case laws of the Indian judiciary bearing reference to the implementation of international law at national level and India’s position as of 31 December 2004 on the Multilateral Treaties deposited with the UN Secretary-General.

Book Tearing Down Walls

Download or read book Tearing Down Walls written by Mr.James M. Boughton and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 1036 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume--the fifth in a series of histories of the International Monetary Fund--examines the 1990s, a tumultuous decade in which the IMF faced difficult challenges and took on new and expanded roles. Among these were assisting countries that had long operated under central planning to manage transitions toward market economies, helping countries in financial crisis after sudden loss of support from private financial markets, adapting surveillance to reflect the growing acceptance of international standards for economic and financial policies, helping low-income countries grow and begin to eradicate poverty while staying within its mandate as a monetary institution, and providing adequate financial assistance to members in an age of limited official resources. The IMF's successes and setbacks in facing these challenges provide valuable lessons for an uncertain future.

Book International Labour Rights and the Social Clause

Download or read book International Labour Rights and the Social Clause written by Arne Daniel Albert Vandaele and published by Cameron May. This book was released on 2005 with total page 959 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Takes as its starting point the observation that a social clause should be concerned with achieving international labour rights. Analyses the conception of international labour rights involving not only law but also other disciplines such as history, morality and economics. Shows that the discussion on the social clause is emblematic of the way the WTO and the international trade system should deal with human rights in general. It requires an approach grounded in international law in the broadest sense, covering general international law, international human rights law, international trade law, international labour law and legal theory.

Book International Law and Weapons Review

Download or read book International Law and Weapons Review written by Natalia Jevglevskaja and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International law requires that, before any new weapon is developed, purchased or modified, the legality of its use must be determined. This book offers the first comprehensive and systemic analysis of the law mandating such assessments – Article 36 of the 1977 Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions. Underpinned by empirical research, the book explores the challenges the weapons review authorities are facing when examining emerging military technology, such as autonomous weapons systems and (autonomous) cyber capabilities. It argues that Article 36 is sufficiently broad to cover a wide range of military systems and offers States the necessary flexibility to adopt a process that best suits their organisational demands. While sending a clear signal that law should not simply follow technological developments, but rather steer them, the provision has its limits, however, which are shaped and defined by the interpretative decisions made by States.
