Download or read book Managing Technologies and Automated Library Systems in Developing Countries Open Source vs Commercial Options written by Bernard Dione and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-27 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of this meeting was the management of technologies in the context of developing countries, and in the light of recent developments concerning especially open source software and applications. Speakers from various countries debated in English and in French over the importance of changing the rules concerning library management systems, as well as related implications. Results show that open source software might be a solution, although some conditions apply.

Download or read book The Automation Inventory of Research Libraries 1986 written by Maxine K. Sitts and published by Association of Research Libr. This book was released on 1986 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on information and data from 113 Association of Research Libraries (ARL) members that were gathered and updated between March and August 1986, this publication was generated from a database developed by ARL to provide timely, comparable information about the extent and nature of automation within the ARL community. Trends in automation are traced in the areas of operating status, locally developed and amended vendor systems, system extent beyond the library, ownership status, public access, and amount of integration; and comparative responses from 1985 and 1986 are presented for the number and percentage of libraries reporting automation status and integrated status. In addition, this document includes: an introduction summarizing trends in automation and changes from the 1985 inventory; the survey letter, instruction and code sheet, and automated in-house systems listing; a listing of libraries and contact persons; listings sorted by function; complete listings of all functions in alphabetical order by library; and comments. Download or read book Managing Library Automation written by Marlene Clayton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1992, Managing Library Automation provides a concise, easy-to-read guide to the main factors which librarians and information workers should be aware of when considering computerization. This second edition has been revised and updated with the assistance of Chris Batt to ensure a fresh perspective. The book retains, however, its original brief of not attempting to cover every detail of an extensive topic, but instead, gives the essential facts and indicates significant trends. Historical accounts have been kept to the minimum and no attempt has been made to describe or explain computing techniques except where an understanding of these assists the effective use of systems by librarians. References to further reading are given where appropriate. The book begins by setting library automation within the context of a wider strategy for the use of Information Technology. The importance of careful planning – the first skill of management – is stressed. Subsequent chapters explore the ‘nuts and bolts’ of hardware and software and reveal some of the more significant changes that have now taken place in the five years since the previous edition was published. The ‘human’ aspect of automation is considered throughout the book. Although a more commonplace activity than five years ago, the successful integration of automation into the total library system is still a considerable managerial achievement.
