Book Mapping Corporate Education Reform

Download or read book Mapping Corporate Education Reform written by Wayne Au and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mapping Corporate Education Reform outlines and analyzes the complex relationships between policy actors that define education reform within the current, neoliberal context. Using social network analysis and powerful data visualization tools, the authors identify the problematic roots of these relationships and describe their effects both in the U.S. and abroad. Through a series of case studies, each chapter reveals how powerful actors, from billionaire philanthropists to multinational education corporations, leverage their resources to implement free market mechanisms within public education. By comprehensively connecting the dots of neoliberal education reforms, the authors reveal not only the details of the reforms themselves, but the relationships that enable actors to amass troubling degrees of political power through network governance. A critical analysis of the actors and interests behind education policies, Mapping Corporate Education Reform uncovers the frequently obscured operations of educational governance and offers key insights into education reform at the present moment.

Book Effective Practices in Achieving Compensatory Education Funded Schools II

Download or read book Effective Practices in Achieving Compensatory Education Funded Schools II written by Aurora C. Barrozo and published by Hippocrene Books. This book was released on 1987 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-four elementary and junior high public schools that have received Chapter 1 funds since 1981 were selected for study in order to isolate effective school practices. Nine of these schools were included, also, in the earlier 1981-82 project; this publication, therefore, contains descriptions of only the 15 new achieving compensatory education-funded schools. Overall findings and conclusions, however, are based on all 24 schools. The goal of this study was to recognize successful Chapter 1 schools so that they can serve as models for other schools. All of these schools rated high on the following criteria: (1) strong academic emphasis; (2) ongoing monitoring of student needs; (3) instructional effectiveness for students and in-service training for teachers; and (4) facilitating a classroom environment conducive to achievement. Fifteen case studies of effective Chapter 1 schools are presented. Descriptions of some of the schools' programs are provided. There are also discussions of particularly effective aspects of the programs at all the schools. Three appendices contain research instruments. Nine tables present data on the responses obtained on questionnaires and in interviews. A bibliography is included. (VM)

Book excerpt: This volume presents the most recent research on Title I federal compensatory education programs. Over the past three decades, Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act has served as the cornerstone of the federal commitment to equality of opportunity. It is the federal government's single largest investment in America's schools. As Title I begins a new century, this book documents the program's history and points to the potential for its future, building on 35 years of research, development, and practical experience. The research and analysis it provides fills a void for systematic information that can help inform Title I education policies and practices. Title I: Compensatory Education at the Crossroads is essential reading for educational researchers and students working in the areas of social stratification and equity-minded policies, programs, and practices. It will serve well as a text for graduate courses on these topics in education, as well as in public policy, sociology, and psychology. Educational policymakers and administrators at the federal, state, and local levels who are concerned with Title I and programs for students placed at risk will find it an important resource in crafting policies and programs for this population of students.
