Book Mathematical Tasks The Bridge Between Teaching and Learning

Download or read book Mathematical Tasks The Bridge Between Teaching and Learning written by Chris McGrane and published by John Catt. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If we want our pupils to develop fluency, understanding and the ability to solve complex problems, then it is vital that teachers develop the ability to select, adapt and design appropriate mathematical tasks. In 'Mathematical Tasks: The Bridge Between Teaching and Learning', Chris McGrane and Mark McCourt a range of practical approaches, strategies and principles behind the design and effective use of tasks in the mathematics classroom that lead to all pupils becoming successful learners. First-hand interviews with world class mathematics education experts and practicing teachers bring to life the ideas behind how tasks can act as a bridge between what the teacher wants the pupil to make sense of and what the pupil actually does makes sense of; tasks are how we enable pupils to enact mathematics - it is only by being mathematical that pupils can truly make connections across mathematical ideas and understand the bigger picture. This is a book for classroom teachers. Chris McGrane offers a range of practical examples for nurturing deep learning in mathematics that can be adapted and embedded in one's own classroom practice. This is also a book for those who are interested in the theory behind tasks. Chris and his interviewees examine the key role tasks play in shaping learning, teaching, curriculum and assessment. Suitable for teachers at all stages in their careers and teachers are encouraged to return to the book from time to time over the years to notice how their use of tasks in the classroom changes as they themselves develop.

Book Inclusion Methods for Nonlinear Problems

Download or read book Inclusion Methods for Nonlinear Problems written by Jürgen Herzberger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This workshop was organized with the support of GAMM, the International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, on the occasion of J. Herzberger's 60th birthday. GAMM is thankful to him for all the time and work he spent in the preparation and holding of the meeting. The talks presented during the workshop and the papers published in this volume are part of the field of Verification Numerics. The important subject is fostered by GAMM already since a number of years, especially also by the GAMM FachausschuB (special interest group) "Rechnerarithmetik und Wissenschaft liches Rechnen". GiHz Alefeld Karlsruhe, Dezember 2001 (President of GAMM) Preface At the end of the year 2000, about 23 scientists from many countries gathered in the beautiful city of Munich on the occasion of the International GAMM Workshop on "Inclusion Methods for Nonlinear Problems with Applications in Engineering, Economics and Physics" from December 15 to 18. The purpose of this meeting was to bring together representatives of research groups from Austria, Bulgaria, China, Croatia, Germany, Japan, Russia, Ukraine and Yugoslavia who in a wider sense work in the field of calculating numerical solutions with error-bounds. Most of those participants have already known each other from earlier occasions or closely cooperated in the past. Representatives from three Academies of Sciences were among the speakers of this conference: from the Bulgarian Academy, the Russian Academy and the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.

Book Variational Inequalities and Network Equilibrium Problems

Download or read book Variational Inequalities and Network Equilibrium Problems written by F. Giannessi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings forth a set of papers presented at the conference on "Varia tional Inequalities and network equilibrium problems", held in Erice at the "G. Stam pacchia" School of the "E. Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture in the period 19~25 June 1994. The meeting was conceived to contribute to the exchange between Variational Analysis and equilibrium problems, especially those related to network design. Most of the approaches and viewpoints of these fields are present in the volume, both as concerns the theory and the applications of equilibrium problems to transportation, computer and electric networks, to market behavior, and to bi~level programming. Being convinced of the great importance of equilibrium problems as well as of their complexity, the organizers hope that the merging of points of view coming from differ ent fields will stimulate theoretical research and applications. In this context Variational and Quasi~Variational Inequalities have shown them selves to be very important models for equilibrium problems. As a consequence in the last two decades they have received a lot of attention both as to mathematical inves tigation and applications. The proof that the above mentioned equilibrium problems can be expressed, in terms of Variational or Quasi~Variational Inequalities also in the non~standard and non~symmetric cases, has been a crucial improvement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching K-12 math becomes an easier task when everyone understands the language, symbolism, and representation of math concepts Published in partnership with SEDL, The Problem with Math Is English illustrates how students often understand fundamental mathematical concepts at a superficial level. Written to inspire ?aha? moments, this book enables teachers to help students identify and comprehend the nuances and true meaning of math concepts by exploring them through the lenses of language and symbolism, delving into such essential topics as multiplication, division, fractions, place value, proportional reasoning, graphs, slope, order of operations, and the distributive property. Offers a new way to approach teaching math content in a way that will improve how all students, and especially English language learners, understand math Emphasizes major attributes of conceptual understanding in mathematics, including simple yet deep definitions of key terms, connections among key topics, and insightful interpretation This important new book fills a gap in math education by illustrating how a deeper knowledge of math concepts can be developed in all students through a focus on language and symbolism.
