Book Magical Hymns from Roman Egypt

Download or read book Magical Hymns from Roman Egypt written by Ljuba Merlina Bortolani and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary study investigates the divine personas in the so-called magical hymns of the Greek magical papyri which, in a corpus usually seen as a significant expression of religious syncretism with strong Egyptian influence, were long considered to be the 'most authentically Greek' contribution. Fifteen hymns receive a line-by-line commentary focusing on religious concepts, ritual practice, language and style. The overarching aim is to categorise the nature of divinity according to its Greek or Egyptian elements, examining earlier Greek and Egyptian sources and religious-magical traditions in order to find textual or conceptual parallels. Are the gods of the magical hymns Greek or Egyptian in nature? Did the magical hymns originate in a Greek or Egyptian cultural background? The book tries to answer these questions and to shed light on the religious plurality and/or fusion of the two cultures in the treatment of divinity in the Greek magical papyri.

Download or read book Well It s Your Cow written by Sam Knight and published by Impulsive Walrus Books LLC. This book was released on 2018-11-10 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the throes of a convention full of geeks, Frog Jones told a story. That story is found in this book's foreword, but the key line from the story became the title of this anthology. The authors seized upon that line, much like an out-of-control bovine seizing its own halter, and stampeded into the volume you see before you. This is not just a comedy anthology. Nor is it horror, or romance, or literary, or…well, any one thing. Rather, it is all those things. Each story starts exactly in the same place. But each author immediately leaps from there into their own world. This anthology celebrates the creativity of these authors, because it does not shackle them to a theme. The starting line is the same—the finish line is on other planets, in other times, and in alternate realities. You’re not going to feel cohesiveness reading this thing. It’s not going to be several stories hitting the same note. But you are going to experience a wider panoply of stories than you would in other anthologies. And as to what you make of them, or what stories they may inspire in you? Well…that’s your cow.

If asked to describe her garden in three words Coral would easily say love, peace, and life. From a young age, Coral shared countless hours with her parents in their home and garden. Her mom and dad had taught her many lessons about giving. Love is giving, Coral could still hear her mother's voice, the garden is always giving. Her garden is love. Though they were gone, their memories and teachings grew only stronger with each passing day. Again, as always, those memories would give her peace. Peace surrounded her because of their love, Coral reassured herself. Her garden would remain a place of peace because of the love her parents planted there so long ago.Mostly, there is life in Coral's garden thanks to its abundant gifts of fruits and vegetables and more. This year the garden surpassed all previous years with richer and more vibrant crops. Everything tastes better, too. Coral believes this is due largely to the remarkable irrigation system built by Professor Charles Austin, who lives on the adjacent property. Professor Austin built a well and a pathway through and around Coral's garden. It is a labor of love from the one man who makes Coral feel as safe as her father once had.Love, peace, and life are in Coral's pathway, but there are obstacles. Life is everchanging, even love.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to the history and practice of Angular Magic • Details the development of the magical system of the Nine Angles by the Church of Satan and the Temple of Set, as well as its internal body, the Order of the Trapezoid • Analyzes the 3 key rites of Angular Magic: Die Elektrischen Vorspiele, the Ceremony of the Nine Angles, and the Call to Cthulhu • Explores historical influences on Angular Magic, including Pythagorean number mysticism, John Dee’s Enochian magic, and the writings of H. P. Lovecraft • Includes practical examples, daily practices, and guidance on creating your own rituals Revealing the magical uses of number and geometry as tools for introspection, self-development, and creating change in both the inner and outer worlds, Toby Chappell explores the rites, history, and potent practices of Angular Magic and Infernal Geometry, the Left-Hand Path of Sacred Geometry. Focusing on the advanced magical system of the Nine Angles, he details the system’s development by the early Church of Satan and later the Temple of Set, as well as its internal body, the Order of the Trapezoid. He shows how the system first emerged in the Ceremony of the Nine Angles, written by Michael Aquino and published in Anton Szandor LaVey’s The Satanic Rituals. He explores historical influences on Angular Magic, including Pythagorean number mysticism, John Dee’s Enochian magic, the theories of William Mortensen, and, most importantly, the writings of H. P. Lovecraft as well as other contributors to his Cthulhu mythos. The author analyzes the 3 key rites of Angular Magic: Die Elektrischen Vorspiele, the Ceremony of the Nine Angles, and the Call to Cthulhu, expanding upon them to demonstrate how readers can craft their own rituals. He examines the Nine Angles individually, detailing their keywords, powers, and related deities, and explains how each can be used in magical practices and as part of an ongoing initiatory process. He offers practical examples, including use of Angular Magic in divination, sigils, and magical symbols, and guidance on creating your own practices--a core component of the ever-evolving Left-Hand Path. Offering a self-directed path of magic and empowerment, previously unavailable to those outside the Temple of Set, Chappell shows how the Nine Angles must be worked with and experienced personally in order to effect true transformation and change.

Book The Laughter of the Thracian Woman

Download or read book The Laughter of the Thracian Woman written by Hans Blumenberg and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-04-23 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important work by 20-century philosopher Hans Blumenberg, here translated into English for the first time, The Laughter of the Thracian Woman describes the reception history of an anecdote best known from Plato's Theaetetus dialogue: while focused on observing the stars, the early astronomer and proto-philosopher Thales of Miletus fails to see a well directly in his path and tumbles down. A Thracian servant girl laughs, amused that he sought to understand what was above him when he was not mindful of what was right in front of him. Blumenberg sees the story as a highly sought substitute for our missing knowledge of the earliest historical events that would fit the label “theory.” By retelling the anecdote, philosophers reveal their distinctive values regarding absorption in curiosity, philosophy's past, and the demand that theorists abide by sanctioned methods and procedures. In this work and others, Blumenberg demonstrates that philosophers' most beloved images and anecdotes have become indispensable to philosophy as metaphors; that is, as representations whose meanings remain indefinite and invite frequent reinterpretation.

For this she sacrificed everything—family, friendship, love—even her own sanity. Brandegarth believes the Lorngeld are better than other men and are destined to rule the earth.
