Download or read book Stanley s Emin Pasha Expedition Classic Reprint written by A. J. Wauters and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stanley's Emin Pasha Expedition In February 1883 Dr. Junker had penetrated so far into the heart of Africa that he found himself at the zeriba Ali Kobo, on the banks of the Welle Makowa, in a region hitherto traversed by no other European. For three years this indefatigable traveller had been exploring north and south, east and west, the districts watered by the Welle, in the hope of finding a definite solution to the important geographical problem propounded by his friend Dr. Schweinfurth, thirteen years previously, as to whether the Welle was connected with the Shary and thence with Lake Tehad, or whether it flowed into the Congo. It needed only a few more weeks of perseverance and progress towards the west, and the explorer would have attained his end and reaped the reward of his labors. He was within a few days' march of the Congo and was about to push onwards, when letters from Lupton Bey brought news of startling import and put an end to further investigations. Dr. Junker had for a considerable time been quite aware how the country around Khartoum was harassed by the revolutionary action of an agitator who professed himself to be the "Mahdi," that is, a deliverer invested with a supernatural mission. He had been apprised that the powerful tribe of the Dinka had taken arms, and was threatening the military settlements and zeribas on the Bahr-el-Ghazal; and had further learnt from Lupton Bey, who was the representative of the Egyptian government in that province, that the route between the Niam-niam country and the landing-place of Rek on the Bahr-el-Ghazal was completely blockaded, while the Mahdists were at the same time making an alarming progress. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Other Side of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition This little book would not have been written had not Mr. H. M. Stanley lately amplified and supplemented by letters and speeches some of the misleading state ments in his volumes entitled 'in Darkest Africa.' It appeared to me necessary that the blame should be laid where it is due and I have taken the task upon myself, believing that, though it might have been more fully executed by a writer personally acquainted with some or all of the men assailed, there are advantages in its being attempted by an outsider who has none but public ends to serve. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stanley and the White Heroes in Africa: Being an Edition From Mr. Stanley's Late Personal Writings on the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition and Discoveries in the Dark Continent, With Other Matter From the Works of His Companions and Predecessors The above statements will also bear out the assertion that few subjects command more attention at the present day than this very one of the explorations of the Dark Continent. It may be urged, on the other hand, ' that of making many books there is no end, and that since there are many in the libraries published upon this subject, another is unnecessary But there is this point to be considered: Such libraries are not accessible, except in the large cities; and even there, no one has so complete a collection on this special subject as the sources to which we have had access. Book The Wizard of Africa

Download or read book The Wizard of Africa written by Francis Tracy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-08 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wizard of Africa: Henry M. Stanley's Last Expedition Through the Dark Continent; The Rescue of Emin Pasha; Thrilling Story of the Great Explorer's Adventures Among the Wild Tribes of the Unknown Continent The natives had the utmost confidence in him, and for their better education, he established training schools all over the province. 'agri culture was developed, and murder, war and slavery became things of the past. Emin's idea of government was to civilize the negroes in as short a time as possible, by the exercise of methods of kindness and con sideration. To this end he appointed the most efficient men he could get as officers. Under his directions hospitals were built, roads were constructed through the country, and the natives were taught how to make wagons. Cotton, coffee, rice, indigo, and wheat were cultivated with success. In the meantime the country surrounding the territory of Emin Pasha remained in its original condition of barbarity, and in it the Arab slave traders carried on their infamous traffic unmolested. In the middle of my preparations for departure, a chance meeting with an old friend and comrade in African work - Charles Ingham - led to a complete reversal of my thoughts and intentions. Ingham, whom I happened to meet at Matadi, was act ing at the moment as the advance agent of Mr. Stanley, in connection with the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. Download or read book My Personal Experiences in Equatorial Africa written by Thomas Heazle Parke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Personal Experiences in Equatorial Africa: As Medical Officer of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition The following pages contain the journal which I kept during the period of my connection with the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. Being desirous to give my original impressions of persons and things, I have made no change whatever in the contents of my African note-books, excepting the necessary ones in the elementary departments of orthography and syntax. I have inserted, here and there, a few paragraphs containing my views on the principal diseases which I was called upon to treat. The remainder of the text I regard as supplementary, in some measure, to Mr. Stanley's volumes. Excepting Darkest Africa, ' no other journal of the entire course of the expedition has been published, and no account of our experiences at Ipoto and Fort Bodo has hitherto seen the light in any shape. The pressure of professional duties has delayed the publica tion longer than I could have wished: the history of the diary itself will, I trust, be, to the indulgent reader, some slight excuse for its many shortcomings in style and arrangement.
