Download or read book A Product of Their Time written by Wayne Ward and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique breed of men and women emerged from the latter part of the nineteenth century. Some risked their lives on the footropes of sailing ships, others rose to prominence in industry, politics and government. Many forged new lives in far-off lands, but all were joined by a common thread to grasp a rapidly changing world and claim a niche in history. Olaf Johansson sailed halfway around the world to find his destiny on the banks of a river of little significance when compared to the great waterways of the world, but for an arid continent a vital artery of commerce. Along its crumbling red clay banks and verdant redgum forests old penal colonies strove for nationhood, eventually achieving independence though never fully casting off the yoke of its old colonial master. A Product of Their Time is a saga of survival, men and women overcoming the brutal and iron-fisted rule of privilege, class and authority.
Download or read book The Moor s Last Stand written by Elizabeth Drayson and published by Profile Books. This book was released on 2017-04-20 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1482, Abu Abdallah Muhammad XI became the twenty-third Muslim King of Granada. He would be the last. This is the first history of the ruler, known as Boabdil, whose disastrous reign and bitter defeat brought seven centuries of Moorish Spain to an end. It is an action-packed story of intrigue, treachery, cruelty, cunning, courtliness, bravery and tragedy. Basing her vivid account on original documents and sources, Elizabeth Drayson traces the origins and development of Islamic Spain. She describes the thirteenth-century founding of the Nasrid dynasty, the cultured and stable society it created, and the feuding which threatened it and had all but destroyed it by 1482, when Boabdil seized the throne. The new Sultan faced betrayals by his family, factions in the Alhambra palace, and ever more powerful onslaughts from the forces of Ferdinand and Isabella, monarchs of the newly united kingdoms of Castile and Aragon. By stratagem, diplomacy, courage and strength of will Boabdil prolonged his reign for ten years, but he never had much chance of survival. In 1492 Ferdinand and Isabella, magnificently attired in Moorish costume, entered Granada and took possession of the city. Boabdil went into exile. The Christian reconquest of Spain, that has reverberated so powerfully down the centuries, was complete.
Download or read book Poet s Nation written by Anna Marie Halabi and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s about life, love, the pursuit of happiness, and ultimately self-actualization. Poet’s Nation is a compilation for the masses to decipher and hopefully enjoy. It may fall into the category of “things that make you go huh” for some; however, it may be thought-provoking for others. Whatever feelings you walk away with, remember it was written with a spirit of humility as I gathered enough ego to actually face the world with my inadequacies. If nothing else, you must admit I have chutzpah.
Download or read book General MacArthur Speeches and Reports 1908 1964 written by Edward T. Imparato and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2000 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two-year search for General Douglas MacArthur's speeches and reports was truly a labor of love. My Administrative Assistant, Ellen Schaefer, and I culled over 1,000 sources including memories, biographies, histories, military magazines such as the Army and Air Force Journals, unit histories, commercial magazines and newspapers. Magazines included such publications as National Geographic, Life Magazine and many esoteric less circulated literature such as Military Magazine, Retired Officers Magazine, Air Force Magazine and so many others. We received guidance and assistance from such sources as the U.S. Military Academy, the Engineering School at Ft. Leavenworth, the Command and General Staff School at Leavenworth, the Army War College, the MacArthur Archives Director James Zobel, the Library of Congress, the War Department; the sources seemed endless. We do believe we were able to capture all the major public speeches and reports covering MacArthur's truly productive years from 1908 through 1964. Contains more than 125 speeches/reports. It will be interesting to note, MacArthur established his personality early in his military career and never veered from this. His admonition from his Mother when MacArthur was a student at West Point was, never cheat, never lie, never tattle"". Adhering to this edict MacArthur offered to resign from the Academy rather than answer questions from the Academy panel investigating hazing and harassment by a group of fellow students. MacArthur continued to develop his hard line against political and military intrigue by resolving to always do what he believed right even if he knew no one was watching. Further he was determined never to refuse to carryout the order of a senior officer - never be insubordinate to constituted authority. ""

Download or read book Standing on Common Ground written by Geraldo L. Cadava and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under constant surveillance and policed by increasingly militarized means, Arizona's border is portrayed in the media as a site of sharp political and ethnic divisions. But this view obscures the region's deeper history. Bringing to light the shared cultural and commercial ties through which businessmen and politicians forged a transnational Sunbelt, Standing on Common Ground recovers the vibrant connections between Tucson, Arizona, and the neighboring Mexican state of Sonora. Geraldo L. Cadava corrects misunderstandings of the borderland's past and calls attention to the many types of exchange, beyond labor migrations, that demonstrate how the United States and Mexico continue to shape one another. In the 1940s, a flourishing cross-border traffic developed in the Arizona-Sonora Sunbelt, as the migrations of entrepreneurs, tourists, shoppers, and students maintained a densely connected transnational corridor. Politicians on both sides worked to cultivate a common ground of free enterprise, spurring the growth of manufacturing, ranching, and agriculture. However, as Cadava illustrates, these modernizing forces created conditions that marginalized the very workers who propped up the regional economy, and would eventually lead to the social and economic instability that has troubled the Arizona-Sonora borderland in recent times. Grounded in rich archival materials and oral histories, Standing on Common Ground clarifies why we cannot understand today's fierce debates over illegal immigration and border enforcement without identifying the roots of these problems in the Sunbelt's complex pan-ethnic and transnational history.

Chaos Rising Odin’s single blue eye bulged while the storm over my curls burst into life, lighting striking the rough stone beneath my feet. Three stars fell from my neckline, high pitched squealing like the death of fireworks silencing everyone in the throne room. “ENOUGH.” I hated shouting and only let that one word out at the same volume Odin had used. The mist pooled around me, swirling in angry puddles at my feet while the storm descended further while I dropped my voice to a more conversational level. “I came to talk, Odin. Not to argue. Are you done being rude or should I just go home?” Oh, Eve, Seth sighed in my head. Eve’s struggle to prove herself continues while the Pantheons do their best to make her life miserable. Download or read book The Life and Work of Rudolf Steiner written by Guenther Wachsmuth and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 1995-06 with total page 1037 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zanoni, first published in 1842, was inspired by a dream. Sir Edward, a Rosicrucian, wrote this engaging, well-researched, novel about the eternal conflict between head and heart, between wisdom and love, played out by the Rosicrucians before the dramatic background of the French Revolution. He described his book Zanoni as "a truth for those who can comprehend it, and an extravagance for those who cannot." Following his introduction, the novel is divided into seven parts, whose titles indicate the sevenfold path of spiritual development. The fourth section, "The Dweller of the Threshold," is the book's centerpiece, revealing significant esoteric facts and experiences. A novelist, a dramatist, a scholar, an editor, and an active member of Parliament, Sir Edward was an extremely successful author whose writings were widely read throughout England and Europe. He poured into this esoteric work all of the ancient esoteric wisdom that he felt he could reveal to the public during an age buried deeply in materialism. This work remains one of the great, pioneering landmarks of esoteric writing.
