Book Coal Country

Download or read book Coal Country written by Ewan Gibbs and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flooding and subsequent closure of Scotland's last deep coal mine in 2002 brought a centuries long saga to an end. Villages and towns across the densely populated Central Belt owe their existence to coal mining's expansion during the nineteenth century and its maturation in the twentieth. Colliery closures and job losses were not just experienced in economic terms: they had profound implications for what it meant to be a worker, a Scot and a resident of an industrial settlement. Coal Country presents the first book-length account of deindustrialization in the Scottish coalfields. It draws on archival research using records from UK government, the nationalized coal industry and trade unions, as well as the words and memories of former miners, their wives and children that were collected in an extensive oral history project. Deindustrialization progressed as a slow but powerful march across the second half of the twentieth century. In this book, big changes in cultural identities are explained as the outcome of long-term economic developments. The oral testimonies bring to life transformations in gender relations and distinct generational workplaces experiences. This book argues that major alterations to the politics of class and nationhood have their origins in deindustrialization. The adverse effects of UK government policy, and centralization in the nationalized coal industry, encouraged miners and their trade union to voice their grievances in the language of Scottish national sovereignty. These efforts established a distinctive Scottish national coalfield community and laid the foundations for a devolved Scottish Parliament. Coal Country explains the deep roots of economic changes and their political reverberations, which continue to be felt as we debate another major change in energy sources during the 2020s.

Book Black Diamonds and the Blue Brazil

Download or read book Black Diamonds and the Blue Brazil written by Ron Ferguson and published by Saint Andrew Press. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 21 years after its publication, a new edition is being published with updated text and new chapters as well as a new Introduction, written by one of the book’s many fans and the biggest name in British football, Sir Alex Ferguson. But this is a book about much, much more than football It is loved not only by Sir Alex but also by Gordon Brown, Alistair Campbell, Ian Rankin and the Rev Kathy Galloway and it was a huge favourite of poet, George Mackay Brown. So why have the trials and tribulations of Cowdenbeath football club – one of the most unsuccessful football clubs in Britain - excited the imagination even of those who have no interest in football and who have never been to Cowdenbeath? Cowdenbeath’s story is set against the rise and decline of the local mining industry and the life after mining. It is very funny, deeply spiritual, moving and also a little bit political. But what makes it so interesting to so many groups is the uplifting story of a real community spirit throughout all of the ups and downs of a town and a football club that is at its social heart and core. It is also the most autobiographical book that Ron Ferguson has written, never taking himself very seriously. The book’s quirkiness appeals across the religious, local, national, and footballing worlds. Long out of print, this is the new and updated 21st-anniversary edition.

Book Communism in Britain 1920 39

Download or read book Communism in Britain 1920 39 written by Thomas P. Linehan and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Communist Party (CPGB) offered a complete identity that could reach into virtually all aspects of life: personal conduct, moral codes, health and diet, personal hygiene, and aesthetic judgments. Communism in Britain, 1920-39 contends that it functioned as a "political religion" for some joiners who opted to enter the congregation of the communist devoted. Based on extensive use of primary evidence, this is the first study of interwar British communism to set the communist experience within the framework of the life cycle. The CPGB sought to address the communist experience at all the principal phases of life--its reach therefore extended to children and youth and control over the various aspects of the adult experience including marital and kinship relations.
