Book excerpt: Courageous bold David, a man of war after God’s own heart who killed Goliath, made himself a great enemy in King Saul who because jealous and did everything to kill King David. But through his struggles and wars with Saul and his house, David trusted and sought God in all things. As a result Saul and his son became a nonexistent thing and God gave to David Saul’s house and his master's wives into David’s keeping, as well as the house of Israel and Judah and told him, “if that had been too little, I also would have given you much more!” (2 Samuel 12:8) Consequentially David stated Oh, sing to the LORD a new song! For He has done marvelous things; His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory.” (Psalm 98:1). I will praise You, For You have answered me, And have become my salvation (Psalm 118:21). David praised God for doing marvelous things for him and giving him with His right hand and His holy arm the victory and becoming his salvation in his real battle with Saul! Yes the word of God tells us that in this world, our enemies rise against us and devise plans to hurt and harm us (Psalm 41:7). But in these times, the God of Victory is powerful to crush our enemies. When we tell Him of our trials and tribulations, then God will help us and will make them as a non-existent thing. The Lord who gave David victory over his enemies and blessed him abundantly is no respecter of persons and shows partiality to no one. If we hold onto the Lord Jesus Christ like the psalmist David and we shall overcome all our problems and the people who rise against us in victory.

Book excerpt: Communion with Christ is much more than a ceremony. When Adam sinned, communion, in its full sense, was lost. The entire Bible story demonstrates God’s design to reestablish communion to its fullest, ultimately bringing us to a new heaven and a new earth. My heart’s desire is that each of these communion messages will be a daily reminder of what God did for us. While one may choose to sit and read through these devotionals, this is probably not the most profitable method. They are better read as a means to stimulate daily contemplation. Communion with God and with fellow believers is to be a way of life.

Book Colossians and Ephesians

  • Pages : 414 pages

Download or read book Colossians and Ephesians written by Margaret Y. MacDonald and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No two works in the Pauline Epistles resemble each other as closely as Colossians and Ephesians. Often recognized for their majestic tone and powerful theological statement, Colossians and Ephesians also present many challenges of interpretation. Most commentaries on these letters seem preoccupied with the same few issues, particularly the question of authorship. As MacDonald addresses these classic questions, she offers a fresh perspective on Colossians and Ephesians by making use of insights from the social sciences. Moreover, by paying attention to subtle differences between the two letters, she brings their distinct perspectives into sharp relief. MacDonald highlights the interplay between Colossians and Ephesians and the social life of New Testament communities. She illustrates how the texts reflect ancient cultural values and are influenced by particular aspects of community life such as worship and household existence. In particular, she reflects on the issues faced by these communities as they formed institutions and interacted with the society around them. She shows the struggles of the New Testament communities to survive and maintain a distinct identity in first-century society. Chapters under Colossians are Greeting (1:1-2)," "Thanksgiving for the Colossians (1:3-8)," "Prayer on Behalf of the Colossians (1:9-14, )" "The Christ-Hymn (1:15-20),""Application of Hymn to the Situation in Colossae (1:21-23)," "Paul's Authority in Colossae and Laodicea (1:24-2:7)," "Debate with the Opponents: The Power of the Risen Christ (2:8-15)," "Debate with the Opponents: Warnings Against Ascetic Practices (2:16-23)," "New Life in Light of the Resurrection (3:1-4)," "Ethical Guidelines for a New Life (3:5-17)," "The Households of Believers(3:18-4:1)," "Prayer, Mission, and Contact with Outsiders (4:2-6)," "Conclusion: Personal Notes and Greetings (4:7-18)." Book Summa Theologica Volume 1

Download or read book Summa Theologica Volume 1 written by St Thomas Aquinas and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Summa Theologica is the best-known work of Italian philosopher, scholar, and Dominican friar SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS (1225 1274), widely considered the Catholic Church s greatest theologian. Famously consulted (immediately after the Bible) on religious questions at the Council of Trent, Aquinas s masterpiece has been considered a summary of official Church philosophy ever since. Aquinas considers approximately 10,000 questions on Church doctrine covering the roles and nature of God, man, and Jesus, then lays out objections to Church teachings and systematically confronts each, using Biblical verses, theologians, and philosophers to bolster his arguments. In Volume I, Aquinas addresses: the existence and perfection of God the justice and mercy of God predestination the cause of evil the union of body and soul free will and fate and much more. This massive work of scholarship, spanning five volumes, addresses just about every possible query or argument that any believer or atheist could have, and remains essential, more than seven hundred years after it was written, for clergy, religious historians, and serious students of Catholic thought."

Download or read book Broken Chains written by Randy Nurmi and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2011-01-14 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broken Chains: Principle to Overcoming Addiction is written for the individual who is caught in a lifestyle of bondage to sin and fear. It is also designed for anyone who has a loved one struggling with sins of this type and have a desire to educate, assist, and support him according to Gods Word. This book does not focus on motivational methods, but instead focuses on the foundational truths of Gods Word and its total sufficiency for solving all the problems facing man. This books purpose is to build hope for both the struggling addict and those who desire to help him through practical principles of faith, hope, and love through Jesus Christ. Individuals who are lost in the valley of addiction frequently ask God to remove the painful trial and its consequences for selfish reasons. Nevertheless, this time of trial, tribulation, and revelation of their true nature and character can be grasped as an opportunity to explore and expand their newfound faith and freedom in Christ. The hope for these lessons would be to build an understanding and confidence for tackling everyday issues and provide encouragement to persevere as trials are overcome and victories are achieved on an every day basis. Success in overcoming the battle of addiction will depend on the individual acknowledging Christs ability alone to set him free from bondage to sin and fear, thereby breaking the chains of addictions. After 20 years of suffering, being full of pride and arrogance, lost in a dark and lonely world, and having the experience of trying time and time again to change myself through people, places, and things, I finally had a solitary but failed attempt at suicide. Christ Jesus was finally allowed to pour down His Mercy upon me and I was given the gifts of His Grace, Faith, Repentance, and Redemption and I was changed into a new man that was created according to God in true righteousness and holiness. It was after this event that I received my calling from the Lord and He gifted me with a tremendous healing of the mind and the ability to remember His Holy Scriptures. I have sought to make Christ Jesus my Lord known to all men as I have come to know Him ever since. I have had the privilege of having the Lord educate and equip me for the last 25 years as a Pastor. The Lord has used numerous individuals, various Biblical courses and trainings, drug and alcohol education, and time of my own suffering in Christ to expand His purpose and plan for my life. Psalm 12:6-7: The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. You shall keep them, O Lord, You shall preserve them from this generation forever.

Book Proper English

Download or read book Proper English written by Tony Crowley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1991. Debates about the state and status of the English language are rarely debates about language alone. Closely linked to the question, what is proper English? is another, more significant social question: who are the proper English? The texts in this book have been selected to illustrate the process by which particular forms of English usage are erected and validated as correct and standard. At the same time, the texts demonstrate how a certain group of people, and certain sets of cultural practices are privileged as correct, standard and central. Covering a period of three hundred years, these writers, who include Locke, Swift, Webster, James, Newbolt and Marenbon, wrestle with questions of language change and decay, correct and incorrect usage, what to prescribe and proscribe. Reread in the light of recent debates about cultural identity - how is it constructed and maintained? what are its effects? - these texts clearly demonstrate the formative roles of race, class and gender in the construction of proper ‘Englishness' . Tony Crowley's introductory material breaks new ground in rescuing these texts from the academic backwater of the 'history of the language' and in reasserting the central role of language in history.
