Book Successional Changes in Plant Species Diversity in Forest Chronosequences on Southern Vancouver Island British Columbia

Download or read book Successional Changes in Plant Species Diversity in Forest Chronosequences on Southern Vancouver Island British Columbia written by Michael William Ryan and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An increasing concern regarding species management and conservation in coastal forests of British Columbia, Canada, is how conversion of old-growth forests to managed forests affects the structure, function, and species diversity of ecosystems, and whether converted forests will eventually recover to a state that mimics many of the characteristic traits of old-growth stands. In this study, the authors investigated successional changes in vascular and nonvascular plant species diversity in the fragmented forest landscapes on southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, using the chronosequence approach. They were particularly interested in understanding how the conversion of old-growth forests into secondary-growth forests would affect the plant-species diversity and what implications these results would have in terms of management in this region.--Document.

Book Wildlife Forests and Forestry

Download or read book Wildlife Forests and Forestry written by Malcolm L. Hunter and published by Pearson. This book was released on 2011 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Issues of sustainability and preserving resources consistently rank among the most important concerns to our customers. To help do our part. Pearson is implementing the following eco-friendly initiatives to our publishing program. This book has been printed on paper fiber from managed forests certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). The use of vegetable-based ink products that contain a minimum of 45% renewable resource content and no more than 5% by weight of petroleum distillates will be integrated. Alternative versions to traditional printed textbooks such as our "Student Value Editions" as well as e-book versions of the text in the "CourseSmart" platform will be offered. Electronic versions of supplemental material such as PowerPoint presentations, Test Banks, and Instructor's Manuals can be found by registering with our Instructor Resource Center at www.pearsoned.com. For more information regarding the Sustainable Forestry Initiative please visit www.sfiprogram.org. Wildlife, Forests, and Forestry: Principles of Managing Forests for Biological Diversity furnishes the reader with a conceptual focus and a broad geographic scope of the interface between forestry and wildlife. The universal information contained in the book allows students to understand the concepts that form the foundations for specific forest management decision making.

Book Post Fire Management and Restoration of Southern European Forests

Download or read book Post Fire Management and Restoration of Southern European Forests written by Francisco Moreira and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-02 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of all the efforts made in fire prevention and suppression, every year about 45 000 forest fires occur in Europe, burning ca. 0.5 million hectares of forests and other rural lands. The management of these burned forests has been given much less attention than fire prevention or fire suppression issues, but the post-fire management of burned areas raises strong concerns (economic and social impacts, soil erosion and water quality, biodiversity loss, forest restoration). Although there are a few publications which address post-fire management, the focus of these has been either on general approaches to restoration or specific topics such as preventing post-fire soil erosion. This book is about the post-fire management of fire-prone forest types in southern Europe. It provides the first comprehensive overview of the topic, ranging from stand-level to landscape-level management, and from emergency actions to long-term restoration approaches.

  • Pages : 404 pages

Download or read book Dendroecology written by Mariano M. Amoroso and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dendroecologists apply the principles and methods of tree-ring science to address ecological questions and resolve problems related to global environmental change. In this fast-growing field, tree rings are used to investigate forest development and succession, disturbance regimes, ecotone and treeline dynamics and forest decline. This book of global scope highlights state-of-the-science dendroecological contributions to paradigm-shifts in our understanding of ecophysiology, stand dynamics, disturbance interactions, forest decline and ecosystem resilience to global environmental change and is fundamental to better managing our forested ecosystems for the full range of ecosystem goods and services that they provide.

Book Mycorrhiza Function Diversity State of the Art

Download or read book Mycorrhiza Function Diversity State of the Art written by Ajit Varma and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth updated and revised edition of a well-received book that emphasises on fungal diversity, plant productivity and sustainability. It contains new chapters written by leading experts in the field. This book is an up-to-date overview of current progress in mycorrhiza and association with plant productivity and environmental sustainability. The result is a must hands-on guide, ideally suited for agri-biotechnology, soil biology, fungal biology including mycorrrhiza and stress management, academia and researchers. The topic of this book is particularly relevant to researchers involved in mycorrhiza, especially to food security and environmental protection. Mycorrhizas are symbioses between fungi and the roots of higher plants. As more than 90% of all known species of plants have the potential to form mycorrhizal associations, the productivity and species composition and the diversity of natural ecosystems are frequently dependent upon the presence and activity of mycorrhizas. The biotechnological application of mycorrhizas is expected to promote the production of food while maintaining ecologically and economically sustainable production systems.
