Book Standing Pat

Download or read book Standing Pat written by Patricia Oliss Brown and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2023-03-21 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1940 to an unwed mother and orphaned at a young age, Standing Pat tells the remarkable story of a girl growing into womanhood determined to make a difference in her part of a troubled world. Her stubborn resilience was called upon early when her mother died of cancer, and at the age of seven, the author was asked to make the decision whether to move into an orphanage or to the home of extended family. What follows is her memoir, a kaleidoscope of life experiences including her roles as nun, teacher, and farmer, building and living in a wigwam, a murder trial, health crises, world travels, widowhood, and activism. Now in her 80’s, the author reflects on a lifetime of challenges, opportunities, and losses, but throughout, her choices embody the sentiment to bloom where one is planted. Pat’s steadfast devotion to providing service, challenging authority, and doing the right thing all intersected with the current issues of her day - racial discrimination, poverty, war, child abuse, and the climate crisis. In a world where it is easy to dismiss the difference one person can make, this book will inspire readers to examine themselves and find opportunities in their daily lives to help those nearest them. ~ Peggy Nestor

Book Rediscovering the Religious Factor in American Politics

Download or read book Rediscovering the Religious Factor in American Politics written by David C. Leege and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text addresses whether and how religion and religious institutions affect American politics. For some time, analysts have argued that the conflicts of the New Deal era rendered cultural differences trivial and placed economic interests at the top of the political agenda. The authors and their collaborators - John C. Green, James L. Guth, Ted G. Jelen, Corwin E. Smidt, Kenneth D. Wald, Michael R. Welch, and Clyde Wilcox - disagree. They find that religious worldviews are still insinuated in American political institutions, and religious institutions still are points of reference. The book profits from the new religiosity measures employed in the 1990 National Election Studies. Part 1 discusses the study of religion in the context of politics. Part II examines religion as a source of group orientation. Part III takes up religious practices and their political ramifications. Part IV does the same for doctrinal and worldview considerations. Part V explores the sources of religious socialisation. In conclusion, Part VI reviews the research on religion and political behaviour and looks ahead to where work should proceed.

Book excerpt: With a foreword by Seymour Lipset, Hoover Institution and George Mason University, USAThe Fall examines one of the twentieth century's great historical puzzles: why did the communist-led regimes in Eastern Europe collapse so quickly and why was the process of collapse so different from country to country? This major study explains why the impetus for change in Poland and Hungary came from the regimes themselves, while in Czechoslovakia and East Germany it was mass movements which led to the downfall of the regimes.

Book My Country Is the World

Download or read book My Country Is the World written by Luke Stewart and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2023-03-07 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Staughton Lynd was one of the principal intellectuals and activists making the radical argument that the U.S. intervention in Vietnam was illegal under domestic and international law. Lynd was uncompromising in his courageous stance that the U.S. should immediately withdraw from Vietnam, and that soldiers and draftees should refuse to participate in the war based on their individual conscience and the Nuremberg Principles of 1950. Lynd did not just write about opposing the war, he was one of the chief proponents of direct action and civil disobedience to confront the war machine at the university, in the halls of power, and in everyday life through refusing to pay income taxes. As Staughton Lynd’s speeches, writings, statements and interviews demonstrate, there were coherent and persuasive arguments against the war in Vietnam based on U.S. and international law, precedents from American history, and moral and ethical considerations based on conscientious objection to war and an internationalism embraced by American radicals which said: “My country is the world, my countrymen are all mankind.”
