The following extracts from the works of the ancients, contain some of the principal passages referring to the subject of disorders of the voice and speech. I have considered it advisable to give the Greek and Latin terms in notes, in order to exhibit the meaning which the respective authors and translators, apparently, attached to the expressions used. I may also here observe that in presenting a panoramic view of the principal theories and remedies proposed, the reader will not fail to gain a pretty correct idea of the gradual advance which has been made in the treatment of stammering from the earliest time up to the present day. Herodotus (484 B.c.) says that the Therean Battos, who had been a stutterer and a stammererf from his youth, consulted the oracle at Delphi. Download or read book Stuttering written by Edward G. Conture and published by Allyn & Bacon. This book was released on 2001 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly readable, clinically oriented book combines theory and therapy and examines all facets of stuttering, from possible etiologies through assessment to treatment. While considerable uncertainty still exists regarding the precise cause(s) of stuttering, Conture provides the reader with an even-handed coverage of fundamental knowledge, methodology, and procedures for effectively dealing with stuttering in children, teenagers, and adults. The book goes beyond a "how to" manual. Rather, Conture's clinical handbook provides both students and clinicians a source for principle-based procedures and strategies for the management of stuttering. Focusing on people who stutter as people first and people who stutter second, the material covers assessment and management of stuttering within the realities of everyday living, concomitant speech and language problems and clinical practice. For those in the fields of communication science and disorders and speech pathology.

Book Approaches to the Treatment of Stuttering

Download or read book Approaches to the Treatment of Stuttering written by Peggy Dalton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years prior to publication ‘cures’ for stuttering seemed to appear constantly, but many were of limited value, were poorly evaluated and gave only a temporary alleviation that was not transferred to daily life. More responsible clinicians produced publications expounding one particular approach to therapy but less was available giving a balanced overview which was of practical help to therapists. Originally published in 1983, this book aimed to provide such an overview, with a focus on practical intervention rather than on theory. The need for careful assessment is particularly stressed and also the need for flexibility in the choice of treatment for any one client. Changes in fluency are looked at in relation to the effects they might have on the person’s life as a whole and factors involved in the maintenance of this change are discussed. In addition, adjuncts to speech therapy, such as drugs, hypnosis and various forms of masking are evaluated. Issues of the training of therapists are raised and suggestions made as to the nature of the therapeutic relationship when working with people who stutter.

Book Gabbard s Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders

Download or read book Gabbard s Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders written by Glen O. Gabbard and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2014-05-05 with total page 1250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive treatment textbook in psychiatry, this fifth edition of Gabbard's Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders has been thoroughly restructured to reflect the new DSM-5® categories, preserving its value as a state-of-the-art resource and increasing its utility in the field. The editors have produced a volume that is both comprehensive and concise, meeting the needs of clinicians who prefer a single, user-friendly volume. In the service of brevity, the book focuses on treatment over diagnostic considerations, and addresses both empirically-validated treatments and accumulated clinical wisdom where research is lacking. Noteworthy features include the following: Content is organized according to DSM-5® categories to make for rapid retrieval of relevant treatment information for the busy clinician. Outcome studies and expert opinion are presented in an accessible way to help the clinician know what treatment to use for which disorder, and how to tailor the treatment to the patient. Content is restricted to the major psychiatric conditions seen in clinical practice while leaving out less common conditions and those that have limited outcome research related to the disorder, resulting in a more streamlined and affordable text. Chapters are meticulously referenced and include dozens of tables, figures, and other illustrative features that enhance comprehension and recall. An authoritative resource for psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric nurses, and an outstanding reference for students in the mental health professions, Gabbard's Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders, Fifth Edition, will prove indispensable to clinicians seeking to provide excellent care while transitioning to a DSM-5® world.
