Book excerpt: "_Stained Glass Rain_ is as image dense and metaphysically jam-packed as any acid trip. Yet for all the very accurate descriptions of hallucinatory experience, this book is no more nostalgia trip.... Like LSD itself, the sixties have been demonized and beatified but rarely have they been humanized as fully as in this novel." --Howard V. Hendrix
Download or read book The Brilliant History of Color in Art written by Victoria Finlay and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of art is inseparable from the history of color. And what a fascinating story they tell together: one that brims with an all-star cast of characters, eye-opening details, and unexpected detours through the annals of human civilization and scientific discovery. Enter critically acclaimed writer and popular journalist Victoria Finlay, who here takes readers across the globe and over the centuries on an unforgettable tour through the brilliant history of color in art. Written for newcomers to the subject and aspiring young artists alike, Finlay’s quest to uncover the origins and science of color will beguile readers of all ages with its warm and conversational style. Her rich narrative is illustrated in full color throughout with 166 major works of art—most from the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum. Readers of this book will revel in a treasure trove of fun-filled facts and anecdotes. Were it not for Cleopatra, for instance, purple might not have become the royal color of the Western world. Without Napoleon, the black graphite pencil might never have found its way into the hands of Cézanne. Without mango-eating cows, the sunsets of Turner might have lost their shimmering glow. And were it not for the pigment cobalt blue, the halls of museums worldwide might still be filled with forged Vermeers. Red ocher, green earth, Indian yellow, lead white—no pigment from the artist’s broad and diverse palette escapes Finlay’s shrewd eye in this breathtaking exploration.
Download or read book Stained Glass written by Janet Hanna and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we think of God, we automatically tend to think of Him in a couple of extremes. He is either some nebulous power that pops up every now and then, or some sort of wild control freak wiping out nations, causing hurricanes, and ruining fun. This book will hopefully show the reader a picture of Gods intimate and absolute communion with mankind. The stories deal with themes not commonly associated with the Almighty. In this book Jesus walks on water, but not on people. He smiles on success, but not sin. His favor falls on the most unsuspecting, and most of the time we never suspect it could be us. The stories and poems raise questions, spirits, hopes, and sometimes eyebrows. Author Janet Hanna hopes that, as you read this book, you will know there is a God. He rolls up His sleeves and goes to work shutting things, holding off on things, saying yes to this and no to that. He is closing doors but opening windowswindows of stained glass.

Download or read book The Angel of Absolute Zero written by Marjorie Stelmach and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-04-29 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marjorie Stelmach's new collection, The Angel of Absolute Zero, seeks to engage its readers in thoughtful reflection on our difficult times. The opening section of the book, entitled Canticle of Want, introduces the collection's governing characteristic: these poems want a lot. They ask us to view our damaged planet and acknowledge our complicity; to question "how it is we have come to this" and take heart in our wish to be more worthy; to accept suffering and loss and yet feel gratitude, expect joy. In short, these poems aspire to "teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom."
Download or read book Picturing the Celestial City written by Michael Watt Cothren and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cathedral of Saint-Pierre in Beauvais, France, is most famous as a failure--its choir vaults came crashing down in 1284--and only secondarily for its soaring beauty. This lavishly illustrated and elegantly written book represents the first serious look at the stunning collection of Gothic stained glass windows that has always dominated the experience of those who enter Beauvais Cathedral. Chapter by chapter, Michael Cothren traces the glazing through four successive campaigns that bridged the century between the 1240s and the 1340s. The reader is transported back in history, gaining fascinating insight into what the glazing of Beauvais actually would have looked like as well as what it would have communicated to those who frequented the cathedral. Contrary to the widespread assumption that these windows are heavily restored, Cothren shows that they are in fact surprisingly well preserved, especially in light of the cathedral's infamous history of architectural disaster. More importantly, Cothren goes far to dismantle a long-held misconception about medieval painted windows, and indeed monumental medieval pictorial art in general: the notion that it was conceived and produced as a substitute text for ignorant, illiterate folks, providing for them a "Bible of the Poor." Indeed, Cothren shows us that stained glass windows, rich with shaded meanings, functioned more like sermon than scripture. As an ensemble, they created a radiant interpretive backdrop that explicated and situated the performance of the Mass in this giant liturgical theater.
Download or read book Light Through Stained Glass written by Dr. Richard E. Blackwell and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-10-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The week had been a long one, a week filled with problems large and small. Saturday, my usual day off, was filled with both a funeral and a wedding. As a pastor, I looked forward with delight to a day of rest so that I could be at my best on Sunday morning; but this was not to be. Not that I would be another Spurgeon, Graham, or Dunham if I had enough rest; but I could at least offer my sermon with clarity, drive, and care. Perhaps I was feeling a bit sorry for myself as the week ended. Alas, I have rather large clay feet.

The analysis methods provide the clinical composition of cultural artifacts to elucidate their provenance, the rate of alteration as a result of exposure to the environment and the effectiveness of conservation and restoration strategies. The techniques are partially or fully non-destructive, are portable, or allow study of different parts of a heterogeneous work of art.
Download or read book On Borrowed Wings written by Chandra Prasad and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-09-09 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adele Pietra has heard her mother say that her destiny is carved in the same brilliantly hued granite her father and brother cleave from the Stony Creek mine: she is to marry a quarryman. But when Adele's brother, Charles, dies in a mining accident, Adele sees the chance to change her life. Enrolling at Yale as Charles, Adele assumes his identity -- and gender -- as a way to leave behind her mother's expectations and the limitations of her provincial Connecticut town. To her own surprise, hair chopped and chest bound, Adele falls in naturally with a lively crew of undergraduates: the Jewish Harry Persky with his slick Manhattan know-how, the quiet and mysterious legacy student Phineas, and the lanky, charismatic Wick. And in many ways, Adele faces her freshman year at Yale as would any undergraduate boy: she dreads invasive PE examinations and looks forward to dances, experiments with cigarettes and reads the classics. Through her work with a questionable eugenics professor and her friendship with a local Italian family, Adele confronts her class and ethnicity as never before, all the while fearing that both her crush on Wick and her mother's well-meaning interventions will put an end to her delicate masquerade. One part social history, one part comingof-age tale, On Borrowed Wings is an impeccably researched first novel that transports us to 1930s Yale, showing us around through the eyes of an unlikely, appealing female narrator.
Download or read book Stained Glass written by Gerred Lee and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-10-29 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if the things that we do and don't do really matter? What if there really is a purpose to our lives? What if there really is someone or something out there, up there? Lionel Elijah Buckner Jr. is comfortable if not completely satisfied with a life consumed by unapologetic self-indulgence. After all, he was the one who survived the challenges of his mixed race upbringing in the deep-south. He was the one who had the courage to move away to New York City and start anew. He was the one responsible for transforming his crude interest in art into a recently uninspired career as an abstract painter. It was remarkable just how much his life had changed since he had assumed complete control over it. But then out of the blue, he receives a call which ever so subtly alters his path. And despite his best initial efforts to keep himself isolated from the stagnant Mississippi muck of his past, a succession of inexplicable coincidences eventually entangle him in the lives of the narrow-minded simpletons he'd thought he'd left behind. Along the way, he is reacquainted with a father he never really knew on his improbable journey back home.
