Download or read book Stahelin s Vitality Fruit Plants and Trees 1931 Classic Reprint written by F. C. Stahelin and Son and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-11-21 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stahelin's "Vitality" Fruit Plants and Trees, 1931 We feel that a little word of explanation is due here. Being located in one of the northern states of the U. S., we can and do produce a full line of nursery stock that is hardy. Now, everyone knows that you cannot take corn from the South and bring it North and get a crop from it. First, it is not hardy; second, it requires too long a growing season. The same reasoning applies to plants, trees or other nursery stock. Our location in Michigan and our close proximity to the lake, which tempers our Winters, is one of our biggest assets. We can ship early, usually the latter part of March and our climate is such that our nursery stock is practically dormant and has no green leaves by May lst. Customers receiving our straw berry plants should remember this. When your strawberries are green and full of blossoms, Stahelin's plants are still dormant, hardly any green foliage showing. They will stand shipment for thousands of miles and arrive in perfect condition. All this is due to our location, our expert method of growing, which helps to make a hardy, enormous producing strain of plants and trees. Book Physiological Ecology of North American Plant Communities

Download or read book Physiological Ecology of North American Plant Communities written by Brain F. Chabot and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although, as W.D. Billings notes in his chapter in this book. the development of physiological ecology can be traced back to the very beginnings of the study of ecology it is clear that the modern development of this field in North America is due in the large part to the efforts of Billings alone. The foundation that Billings laid in the late 1950s came from his own studies on deserts and subsequently arctic and alpine plants, and also from his enormous success in instilling enthusiasm for the field in the numerous students attracted to the plant ecology program at Duke University. Billings' own studies provided the model for subsequent work in this field. Physiological techniques. normally confined to the laboratory. were brought into the field to examine processes under natural environmental conditions. These field studies were accompanied by experiments under controlled conditions where the relative impact of various factors could be assessed and further where genetic as opposed to environmental influences could be separated. This blending of field and laboratory approaches promoted the design of experiments which were of direct relevance to understanding the distribution and abundance of plants in nature. Physiological mechanisms were studied and assessed in the context of the functioning of plants under natural conditions rather than as an end in itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ever greater number of our contemporaries will reach a very much greater age than their ancestors. Longevity is one of the most fertile fields for paradoxes: it is clear that the same causes do not produce the same effects at the age of ten and at the age of one hundred! On the subject of longevity, the "recipe book" is far from having been written. Nevertheless, the Fondation IPSEN has chosen a few of these paradoxes to discuss and try and explain them.

Download or read book Plant microbe Interactions 2 written by Gary Stacey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant-Microbe Interactions, Volume 2 Volume 1 of this series has made its appearance and dealt forcefully with impor tant current topics in the field of plant-microbe interactions. We believe that the quality of those chapters was high and should serve as a focal point for the state of the art as well as an enduring reference. Volume 2 builds upon these accom plishments. Chapter 1 discusses the fascinating lipo-chitin signal molecules from Rhizo bium, aspects regarding their biosynthesis, and the basis for host specificity. These molecules are a cardinal example of how microorganisms influence plant development and stimulate speculation that they have identified a previously un known aspect of plant hormone activity. Chapter 2 continues the discussion of Rhizobium by considering the trafficking of carbon and nitrogen in nodules. Al though the ostensible advantage of nodules to plants is the fixation of atmos pheric nitrogen, the actual process involved in supplying reduced nitrogen to the plant host is complex.

Book Handbook of Vitamin C Research

Download or read book Handbook of Vitamin C Research written by Hubert Kucharski and published by Nova Science Pub Incorporated. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 6-carbon lactone known as ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is an important water-soluble vitamin. It is essential for preserving optimal health and it is used by the body for many purposes, including collagen biosynthesis, melanin reduction and enhanced immunity. This book addresses some important issues related to various methods which are employed to encapsulate asorbic acid. A comparation of the characteristics of ascorbic acid nano and microparticles prepared by different methods is also given. Furthermore, the biomedical significance of human vitamin C metabolism is examined, in the light of polymorphisms in xenobiotic enzymes deduced from genetic, biochemical and epidemiological results to estimate optimal nutrition. Additionally, Vitamin C exerts a protective role against some types of cancer. For that reason, this book investigates the protective effect of vitamin C. Possible pro- and antioxidant effects of vitamin C is also presented and their extrapolation on human health is discussed. Other chapters in this book include a review of the role of vitamin C in the physiology of several diseases, good dietary sources of vitamin C, a study of the effects of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) on vitamin C status in exposed populations and the role of vitamin C in human reproduction and its effect on people who suffer from epileptic seizures.

Book Plant signaling Understanding the molecular crosstalk

Download or read book Plant signaling Understanding the molecular crosstalk written by Khalid Rehman Hakeem and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant signalling has emerged as an integrated field which has become indispensable in recent times to study any biological process. Over the last decade, an enormous amount of information has been generated in this field and the advances in information technology gave birth to bioinformatics which has helped greatly in managing the galaxy of information. It is now possible to view the different information’s in a systems biology approach which has unravelled the association/ new processes and thus helped us enormously in understanding of the biological processes. The present book is an attempt at understanding the plant signalling processes with different perspectives. Even though the plants are sessile but there exists a tremendous interconnected network of perception at morphological, physiological and molecular levels. The impact of the surrounding environment in terms of abiotic and biotic stresses is significant in terms of its survival, adaptation and productivity for the human welfare. The plants possess a wide array of processes at the organ, tissue and cellular levels which are governed by a plethora of molecules. The molecules govern individual processes and these exists a cross talk between them to form a complex network of processes. The book tries to envision how different processes are operating at different points in the life cycle of the plant.
